The City As A Metaphor

• Hand in a paper copy of the essay at the beginning of the lecture on the day it is due
• Format the essay as follows: o 12 point font (Times New Roman) o double-spaced o 1 inch (2.54 cm) margins on all sides o page length will be specified on the assignment o quotations longer than two sentences should be placed in a block
quotation, single-spaced and indented from the paragraph o On the top left corner of the essay on the first page include your name
(and name of all group members, if applicable), your student #, the name of the assignment, and the name of the course. No title page is necessary
o Number the pages consecutively beginning with the first page o Staple the essay on the top left corner. Do not include any folders or
duo tangs
• Citations: o In-text citations should take the form of: (Author Year:Page #)
Example: Garfinkel believed that breaching experiments were helpful as “aids to a sluggish imagination” (Garfinkel 1967:38)
o Include a Reference or Works Cited section at the end of the essay, and use the format: Garfinkel, Harold. 1967. Studies in Ethnomethodology. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall
o Avoid paraphrasing material from a text. Cite the text directly and then explicate, analyze and apply the quotation.
o No need to cite the lecture material or me directly. Something along the lines of “As we discussed in lecture…” will do fine.
o There are strict penalties for academic dishonesty and plagiarism. Any material or ideas not your own must be appropriately cited. See GH policies on the matter, or if you have any questions please ask me.
