Purpose

The systems analyst job carries into and beyond the implementation stage. Often, this is a confusing time for the client, who may not understand the complexities of these steps. You will need to research key terms and provide examples. The selection of appropriate sources establishes your credibility with clients. A “Research Methodology” Appendix allows your client to critically evaluate a study’s overall validity and reliability. In addition to research and presentation of ideas, this assignment will test your ability to explain technology concepts to non-technical clients.

This assignment addressed two content areas: first, types of system architecture design requirements; and second, methods of testing systems for implementation.

Assignment Instructions and Requirements

When finalizing system requirements, it is helpful to return to previous parts of the SDLC and the design specifications. In this case, we want to review requirements related to architecture design. Your task is to explain the four primary types of nonfunctional requirements that can be important in designing the architecture. You’ll want to examine relevant subtypes and research examples of these types of requirements.

The second main concept to explore this week is to review various testing methods – ways to verify that the system does what it was designed to do.

As you are researching the examples, you will want to evaluate your sources and document it in a Research Methodology Appendix. You will need at least 3 sources beyond the textbook (the textbook does not count as a source). Appropriate academic or scholarly resources include books, academic journal articles, and published expert reports. Be wary of advertisements, opinion sources, and crowd-sourced documentation (like Wikipedia).

There are two research methodology components: Process and Evaluation. For process, you will want to explain what was your method of research? How did you search for your examples? For source evaluation you will want to identify what makes your sources appropriate for this presentation? Why are they relevant?

A factory has several departments. A department may have many employees but must have at least seven. Every employee works for one and only one department. Every department has a manager — only one manager per department. A manager is an employee of the company, but not all employees are managers. A department may have many machines, and every machine is assigned to a specific department. Products are produced on machines. A product can be an assembly of several different components or a single piece. Every product goes through one or more machines for appropriate production operations. Likewise, several products may go through a particular machine for a production operation. The employee has a first name, last name, and middle name, gender, address, and salary. An employee number uniquely identifies an employee. Departments have departments name, type, and location. The department’s name and number are both unique identifier of a department. Every machine will have a unique machine number, name, type, and vendor’s name.

When a machine goes for maintenance, the date of maintenance must be captured, since a maintenance activity is identified by the date of the maintenance for each machine. The attributes of maintenance activity are time taken and cost.
A product is identified by its component ID, component name, and description.

7- Create an ERD by first identifying the entities, then their relationships, and finally add the attributes to each entity.

8- Create a logical data model from ERD, including primary and foreign keys.

9- Implement the logical model into a DDL and build the database in SQL Server (or any other DBMS that you have installed)

10- Create some synthetic data and insert the data into the database.

Because of the housing bubble, many houses are now selling for much less than their selling price just two to three years ago. There is evidence that homeowners with virtually identical houses tend to ask for more if they paid more for the house. What fallacy are they making?

Discussion 2.1

Children in poor neighborhoods have bleak outlooks on life and do not see much gain to studying. A recent experiment is paying children in poor neighborhoods $100 for each “A” they earn in a six-week grade reporting cycle. How does this affect the children’s behavior?

Discussion 2.2

Probably the most important source of capital is human capital. For example, most medical doctors spend years learning to practice medicine. Doctors are willing to make large investments in their human capital because they expect to be compensated for doing so when they begin work. In Canada, the government nationalized the health-care system and reduced doctors’ compensation. Is this a form of post-investment hold-up?

 Create a Jupyter notebook containing a title of “homework 2”, your name, and the course CPSMA 4313. Load any libraries you will use in a code block at the beginning. 

1. Gather the data from a fitbit provided on Kaggle and provided in the github repo for this course. The link is provided here https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nurfnick/Data Viz/main/Activity Dataset V1.csv. I have used ‘quotes’ when discussing a column in the dataset. 

(a) (10 points) Store the data as a pandas dataframe. Examine each datatype and comment on the appropriateness of each. 

(b) (10 points) Remove the column that repeats the indexes and is ‘unnamed’ as a column. 

(c) (10 points) Clean the column names to remove the unit declaration, (%), using regular expressions. The column name should not have any trailing spaces after cleaning. You will only receive partial credit for simply renaming columns without using regular expressions. 

(d) (10 points) Convert ‘activity day’ column into a datetime format. 

(e) (10 points) Impute ‘total steps’ by replacing the ‘NaN’s with an appropriate number of steps. Convert to appropriate datatype. 

(f) (10 points) Convert non-empty ‘avg pace’ into a float that is still representative of the information contained in the column. Recall that there are 60 seconds in one minute so 3:30 is equivalent to 3.5 minutes. 

(g) (10 points) Group data by ‘workout type’ and find the mean, median, count and standard deviation of ‘calories’. 

(h) (10 points) Create an indicator column that identifies if the activity achieved 30% or more ‘aerobic’ activity. 

(i) (10 points) Which day of the week (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) and ‘workout type‘ has the maximum of the ‘max cadence’.

Write an arithmetic expression that calculates the average of 18 and 46.

You may already know that:

• the average of two numbers is their sum divided by 2
• the symbol for division is /, thus 10 divided by 5 is written as 10/5
• division has higher arithmetic precedence than addition
• parentheses (()’s) may be used to override precedence

Thus, one correct solution would be:

Even with an exercise as simple as taking the average of 18 and 46 it is still possible to make mistakes. For example:

• we might forget to use parentheses:
  18+46/2
• or, we might use the wrong arithmetic operator:(18-46)/2

Try these and see the system feedback. Also try entering some of your own incorrect answers, and see what you get.

Again, what makes programming so interesting is that there are also MANY ways to be right. For example, we could reverse the 18 and 46 and still have a correct answer:

(46+18)/2

One of the most essential components of all learning is experimentation. Nowhere is this more true than in learning programming. Students should be encouraged to experiment with solutions even after “getting it right”.
