Geosci 105 Online

Activity #1:

I have randomly selected six measurements collected at the Mauna Loa sampling site between 1986 and 1993 and highlighted the data in light blue. Plot the six points on the given graph below in blue ink or blue pencil. To hand in eventually you will need to scan the graph or use your phone to take a photo of the graph. Based on your data, is CO2 increasing or decreasing? Determine the rate of increase/decrease by calculating the slope of the line (remember back to high school science that slope=?Y/?X or change in y-variable divided by change in x-variable) that best passes through your six data points.

Activity #2:

The CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is a concern because of it being an important greenhouse gas. High concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contribute to global warming. How many years will it take for the CO2 concentration to double its 1993 content?

Activity #3:

I have highlighted six more measurements in red this time for the single year of 1988. Plot these six data points on your graph above.Does this change your interpretation? What new detail is added to the relationship when the more complete data is plotted? Whymight CO2 vary throughout an individual year? Maybe think about photosynthesis by plants where CO2 and H2O are converted into sugars and oxygen.

Activity #4:

Below is some of the most recent CO2 data from Mauna Loa. Are CO2 levels higher or lower than those from the last part of the previous table? What is one aspect of global warming that concerns you most?

Environmental Shopping Assignment-Introduction

Consumers can make a difference with regard to environmental issues. The purpose of this assignment is to get you to think about how your individual choices in the marketplace can affect the local and global environment. For Part 1 of this exercise, go to a large grocery store such as Winn Dixie or Publix, and obtain the information necessary to answer the questions below.  (Note: you don’t have to purchase anything, just record the information.)

Note: You do not need to go supermarket and talk manager. Visit supermarket website if you get information add them otherwise leave it Rest of things you can do online.

Part 2 of this exercise involves the assessment of your own personal consumption patterns and the impact on the environment. By performing an honest assessment you may discover new ways to be more efficient and conservative in your use of materials. You may also become more aware of how your own personal choices have a global effect in patterns of consumption and solid waste management.

Part 3 requires you to research an online product and evaluate the environmental claims of the manufacturer. Finally, the success of this exercise depends on the accuracy, honesty, and insight of the person performing the assessment.

Part 1: Go to a Grocery Store!

1. Talk to the manager whether they recycle paper and plastic bags. Make sure to determine whether the bags are actually recycled, or simply labeled recyclable. What do you think are the environmental costs of paper versus plastic bags? Which do you think is better or worse? How do these costs change with recycling? How about reuse?

2. Choose five different products which come in different sized containers. Examples include flour and sugar (1 Ib versus 5 Ib bags), vegetable oils, or cereal and powdered detergent (small versus large boxes). Make a short table of the products you chose. For each type calculate the cost per unit volume of that packaged in small versus large containers. This is done by dividing the price by the volume. Which is cheaper? Which uses more packaging per unit volume? Which is the better buy? Make sure you make comparisons for the same brand name, packaged differently (e.g. small versus large box).

3. Choose ten different products that come in plastic containers. Examples include ketchup, milk, peanut butter, etc. Check the bottom or sides of each for the PETE, PET, or HPDE number, which is an indication of what type of polyethylene was used to make the container. Numbers should range from 1 to 7. Make a table of the name of the products and the numbers you found. Which containers can or cannot be recycled in your area? You may need to make a phone call to your waste collection firm to find this answer.

4. Choose any five different cleaning products and read their labels for ingredients and warning signs. Examples include floor cleaners, carpet cleaners, ammonia, bleach, bathroom cleaners, etc. Make a table of the products, the ingredients and the warnings. For each product you choose list alternatives which would reduce your use of these substances, many of which are toxic. Think in terms of non-toxic products that would get the job done.

What do you think would be the savings for your household if you replaced many of these cleaning products? How about for the environment and human health?

5. Check the labels on five different products packaged in cardboard boxes. List the products you chose and indicate whether there is any indication on each about whether these packages are ‘recyclable’ or made from ‘pre-‘ or ‘post- consumer’ recycled products. What do these different designations mean? Which do you think is preferable and why?

6. Choose several (5+) examples of recycled paper products in the grocery store. List the products you chose and answer the following questions. What is the recycled paper content? Is it made from pre or post-consumer recycled materials? Has the paper been bleached? What are the environmental effects of paper production?

7. Using the given information, (which means this is not at the store) determine the cost of one no rechargeable alkaline battery ~ and compare with the cost of one rechargeable NiCad battery ~. *Assumption: The cost of the electricity to recharge the NiCad is negligible (about $0.01). NiCad batteries can be recharged (reused) 100 times. A 4 pack of AA NiCad rechargeable batteries cost $10.80. A 4 pack of AA alkaline no rechargeable batteries cost $3.69.

Part 2: Personal Consumption Patterns

Track your personal consumption over the period of one week. After the one week period is over, describe your general consumption patterns for each topic listed below. Between 4 -7 products for each category is appropriate.  Answer the questions in each section. Present your information in table form.

1. Miscellaneous products you buy on a regular basis (e.g., daily/weekly/monthly).

a. Does the product have excess packaging?

b. Is the packaging recyclable/reusable/biodegradable?

c. Do you have other options to avoid the dollar and environmental costs of excess packaging?

d. Does the store stock similar environmentally friendly items?

e. Are the shopping bags reusable/recyclable/biodegradable?

f. Was the purchase item a ‘need’ or a ‘want’?

2. Food

a. Does any of the food you buy has excess packaging?

b. Do you buy many individually packaged items (eg. fast food)?

c. Do you have the option to buy in bulk to decrease dollar and environmental costs of packaging?

d. Are the packaging/containers reusable/recyclable/biodegradable?

3. Clothing (including accessories and shoes)

a. How many items do you buy, on average, in a month?

b. Are the items ‘needs’ or ‘wants”?

c. How do you dispose of the items when you no longer want them?

4. Newspapers and other periodicals

a. How much do you buy in a month?

b. Are they printed on recycled or recyclable paper?

c. How are they disposed of?

5. Hazardous Materials

a. What kinds of hazardous materials (eg. bleach, batteries, pesticides, motor oil, etc.) do you have?

b. Where is the nearest hazardous waste disposal site?

c. Are there any alternatives to using some of these hazardous materials?

After answering all questions, write a short discussion (no more than1 page) on how choices you make in the store can affect broader environmental issues.

Part 3: Product Analysis

In addition to your research of a local supermarket, you need to complete an in-depth analysis of a product that claims to be environmentally sound. This product must be sold ON-LINE. Please provide the website and address of the product that you analyzed. In order to fully analyze the product you must:

· State the environmental claims of your product (this could include recycled content or ability to be recycled/limited chemical content/ability to reduce environmental impacts/low energy consumption/limited packaging/durability etc.)

· Discuss any eco-label claims that your product has (and the reliability of those claims)

· Conduct a life-cycle analysis of your product

· What processes/substances/energy/raw materials/packaging/transportation were used to create your product?

· What impacts does your product have during use (energy use/creation of by-products/creation of waste)?

· How is your product ultimately disposed of?

· Use quantitative analysis to determine if this product is truly environmentally sound. (I.e. How much energy is used by this product compared to one that does not claim to be energy efficient?)

· Make a final decision on the environmental responsibility of your product. Does this product hold up to its environmental claims? Are the claims at all misleading to consumers? Would you recommend this product to someone who is looking to make responsible consumer choices? What would you modify to improve this product? Are there comparable products on the market that would be a better choice (if applicable discuss price differences)?

PHIL320

September 18, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

Assignment Instructions

See the screenshot of the initial setting of the C-Roads World Climate Simulator below.  It is necessary to use Google Chrome or Firefox to run the simulator.  It is recommended that you use the online version. This simulator is accessed at

http://forio.com/simulate/climateinteractive/c-learn

This is the BAU (Business as Usual) projections for temperature increase of 4.2 degrees Celsius by 2100.  Under “Graphs” the CO2 concentration is above 800 (ppmm), far above the 450 maximum indicated by scientists.  These are far above the dotted lines which indicate the scientific recommended goal to minimize the impact of climate change.  Here the current scenario matches the BAU because no changes have been made by the user.  There are drop-down menus at the top (Simulation, Graphs, etc.).  Also, the years (2100) and % on the table beneath that can be changed.  This will automatically adjust the outcomes of the online simulation.  Additionally, under “Simulation” you can adjust a category called Assumptions and Sensitivities.  See my initial simulation below.

Here you can see that I have capped emissions for every region at the year 2050 and an annual decrease of 2%, with a 3% reduction in deforestation and a 4% promotion of afforestation.   The simulation indicates that this will result in a 3.1 degree rise in temperature by the year 2100, far above the recommended limit of 2 degrees.  Under Graphs > Impacts > Sea Level Rise, I was also able to determine that the projected sea level rise would only be slightly less than the BAU level 1+ meter.  Obviously, this scenario indicates that much more needs to be done to have a positive effect on climate change and to avoid the recommended maximums (always indicated by dotted lines on the graph) in order to avoid the massive negative impacts of climate change.  Under Window > 2100 Data Table, my SIM showed the following.

Year 2100

Atmospheric CO2 concentration (ppm)639.2

Atmospheric CO2eq concentration (ppm)681.6

High climate sensitivity temperature change (ºC)4.2

Temperature change (ºC)3.1

Low climate sensitivity temperature change (ºC) 1.8

Sea level rise from 2000 (m)1.1

Go ahead and explore different simulations with variables in the table, regionally and global, and the options of the Simulation and Graphs menus from the menu bar.  See what it might take to bring about a positive effect on climate change achieve the recommended scientific limits on temperature change and CO2 levels etc.  It is good to type some notes as you go to note the different variables and your exploration of the simulation because this SIM is online and cannot be saved.  You will be composing a 250 word narrative describing your interaction with the simulation.  Also, you will want to save and upload an image of one of your SIMs in the textbox.  This can be done with any method by which you take a screenshot, upload the image to your student workspace, set the image for public viewing  (Workspace > Actions > Edit Details > Publicly Viewable) and upload it here using the Image button (12th button on the middle row of the text editor).  In Windows, you can hit the PrtScrn (Print Screen) button and use MS Paint, Windows Photo Viewer, or another program to paste it and save it.  In Firefox you can now take and save and download screenshots from the browser itself.  Any method which works for you will be fine.

The image of your SIM and your 250 word narration of your experience and outcomes placed in the textbox and submitted complete this assignment.

Chapter 4 reword

Discussion Questions

1. Many believe that truly addressing inequities in the food system requires going beyond food to address inequities in society. Yet, those social inequities are difficult to change for many reasons. Where would you focus your energy?

Answer: I will focus my energy more on food equities because the nature of the food system- from agricultural production through retailing and consumption to trade contributes to food insecurity and inequities in diet-related health. The food system is also a major contributor to climate change and is increasingly affected by it, thus resulting in reduced quantity and affordability of food in many countries. This contribution is predicted to increase and to cause disproportionate harm too vulnerable populations.

2. The authors note that in some cases their discussion of how our food system affects inequalities is speculative (particularly due to a lack of evidence on pathways from broad national and international food systems forces to health inequalities). Do you agree? Why and why not?

Answer: I agree with the speculations because from the text, its been shown how food system and its components are key loci and contributors to explaining health disparities. The products and externalized costs of our food production system are inequitably distributed throughout society, as a result of supply, demand, and other social and economic factors. The determinants of disparities are like a prism, refracting the elements of our food system and making them differentially available, accessible, and even preferred by various sectors of society. The UN has defined food security as a situation whereby “all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.”

3. Julie Guthman’s piece, “Foodies on a Mission,” is provocative. What you think of her view of a civilizing mission in the alternative-food movement?

Answer: I think her mission is to a positive one that would change people’s way and manner of eating, educating them on how to eat healthy and not just to consume junks thinking they’re eating food. And this is common amongst the colored people who just eat all they find at the grocery stores not even bothered about how the food comes about, its nutritional value, or even the mode of preservation, as long as it is present in the neighborhood store, it is believed to be good food, so the ‘civilizing mission on the alternative food movement would open their eyes to what food is and not the junks they are used to, and as it is called a mission it should be something that should be worthy of emulation and not imposed on the people.

4. Patricia Allen writes, “Although local food movements cannot be held responsible for rectifying injustices of the past, neither is it clear how physical geography is a defensible arbiter for boundaries of caring, action, or understanding.” Do you think we should have some special responsibility to those who are more local to us?

Answer: yes, I think we should have some special responsibility to those who are more local to us because if there are people assigned with special responsibilities, local food movements would be controlled, and locals would also be responsible for feeding themselves in a way to make it go round the community.

5. The chapter authors write that it is possible that over the middle and longer term, food system environmental threats might contribute to making the healthy and sustainable choice the affordable choice. Do you agree or disagree?

Answer: I totally agree with the author, it is possible that over the middle and longer term, food system environmental threats might contribute to making the healthy and sustainable choice the affordable choice.

Reword assignment chapter 10

September 18, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

Chapter 10 Discussion Questions

Question-What would the US diet look like if there had never been any food advertising or promotion? What would US food system look like?

Answer-Promotion is used to market all forms of food in the US food system from oats to frozen vegetables to meat to soft drinks, fast food, and candy. Health concerns have arisen because a large proportion of the marketing reaching food consumers is for foods that dietary recommendations indicate should be consumed in moderation. This brings me to believe that the US diet would be better if there had never been any food advertising or promotion. There would also be lower rates of obesity and illness. The US food system would not be what is today with advertising because outside of what individual normally consume, there would not be any type of major influence on people’s eating habits.

Question-What difference has the increasing amount of segmentation in modern marketing methods made to the effects of promotional marketing?

Answer-It recognizes, that a one-size-fits-all approach to marketing no longer works among diverse, sophisticated consumers. Children and youth represent an important demographic market because, as one-quarter of the US population, they are a large base of potential customers and influence purchases made by parents and households. They also constitute the future adult market, creating the incentive for manufacturers to instill brand loyalty that will last into adulthood. The effectiveness of promotional marketing was enhanced because foods were positioned to appeal to and reach different target groups.

Question- Is restricting food advertising and promotion desirable or doable today? Is using marketing for promoting healthier eating a preferable approach? What other strategies might be used to alter the marketing environment in order to improve eating behaviors?

Answer-I don’t believe restricting food advertising and promotion is desirable, because to the allows big name brands to appeal to and influence large groups. This is the driving force behind to success of big food brands. Due to the fact that majority of the food items that are marketed today are items that should only be consume in moderation, I do not think it is preferred by certain industries and companies to promote healthier eating. Currently there are many agencies and groups that are advocating eating healthier. In order to alter the marketing environment to improve eating behaviors would require companies to be more concern about the health effects of over consuming their processed products and less of the dollars they’ll earn promotion it.

Question-What kind of full systems change would reduce the incentive for the private food sector to engage in promotional marketing in the first place?

Answer-The private sector must play a large role in helping consumers select more health-promoting foods. They are presented with both opportunities and challenges by the scientific consensus that specific changes in eating habits are likely to substantially reduce the public’s risk of heart disease, cancer, and many other diet-related chronic diseases. If the private food sector had to fully disclose the actual risk involved with the consumption and/or over consumption of their products it would reduce incentive for the private food sector to engage in promotional marketing.

Question-To what extent is it a free speech issue to allow marketers to put out whatever messages they wish, targeting whomever they wish, with whatever frequency they wish? What about if they mask their identities?

Answer-It becomes a free speech issue when marketers are purposely fabricating the benefits and risk associated with the consumption or use of their products. Marketers should not be able to mask their identities, because I feel if markets chose not to identify themselves then it would cause issues of trust and discernment associated with that particular product or brand.

Evidence: short answer

September 18, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

In one paragraph, describe the evidence that supports the main idea or thesis of the news story you chose in learning block 1-2 for your final project. What specific data is discussed or referenced? Are any additional research studies discussed? Make sure you are as specific and objective as possible as you explain the data discussed in the news story. Be detailed in your description, providing scientific background cited in the article or discovered in your search process. Are you able to get more information on the original research if you want to? Is there information about where the information was originally published?

Based on the previous analysis, do you feel that the information presented in your news story is valid and reliable? Support your answer with three reasons that are grounded in evidence.

As you complete this assignment, keep in mind that your answers to these questions or similar questions will be part of your Project 1 submission, which is due at the end of this theme.
