American Imperialism

The period after civil war was a very tough one for United States. During this era, the nation experienced a lot of indifference on the matters of foreign affairs. Moreover, the state was not clear on how it would conduct international relations. At this time, the people of this great nation thought it wise not to have an overseas empire. However, this changed drastically towards the 1890s. The country was set to conquer and set up its overseas empire. Even so, individuals were indifferent over the matter. Some of the Americans thought that the country was ready for an overseas empire while others disagreed.

The advocates of the overseas empire believed that it was the best decision they could ever make. This was largely because they were thinking on the basis of business interest1. These people believed that by annexing the numerous islands, they would be creating new market for their goods. The United States produced a lot of goods through the industries that they had set up. Some individuals thought that the country was facing overproduction and it had to expend its markets. Annexing of the islands was a good idea. Furthermore, the supporters of the overseas empire viewed the islands as fields of investments. The islands had land where they could set up industries and grow crops. Additionally, the proponents also thought it would be a wise idea because the country would expand its political boundaries. This would mean that the authority would command a larger area. Moreover, the military would also grow bigger.

The opponents of the overseas empire thought that the idea was outrageous. This was because the annexing of the islands seemed like a ploy for the state to continue with the act of slavery. The thought of having an overseas empire angered the opponents leading them to form an alliance known as the American Anti-imperialist League2. The association was formed for the sole purpose of fighting against the annexation of the Philippines. Moreover, the opponents were not happy with the idea because they perceived the United States to be a young country that ought to have been concentrating on reclaiming itself. They argued that the country was still an infant and that it was unable to create an empire for itself. Not to mention, some senators argued that by annexing the islands the individuals would have violated the American traditions. In addition, they said that the country was fine just the way it was and it did not require other nations to be a part of it.

Another reason that stood out from the opponents was that the islands to be annexed were very far away from the pacific coast. They argued that the United States would not be benefiting a lot from other nations. Others also claimed that the Filipinos and Spaniards were very primitive and that they did not want them to join their developed state. The challengers felt that the Unites States would be helping other countries by teaching them how to be civilized. During this era, the United States was very indifferent about an overseas empire. Even so, the advocates of the overseas empire went ahead with the annexation of the Philippines.

Unit 4 Discussion – Party Politics in the 1790s

September 9, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

The 1790s was a decade of significant political conflict as the new nation witnessed the rise of political parties in response to domestic and international developments. In 1789, there were no official political parties. By the end of the decade, two political parties, the Federalists and Republicans, vied with one another for control of Congress and the presidency. In this discussion, you will explore the positions of one of these political parties.

REQUIRED READINGS Read the following sources for this discussion:

1. American Yawp: Chapter 6 2. Alien and Sedition Acts 3. Kentucky Resolutions

INSTRUCTIONS For this assignment, you will CHOOSE ONE of the political parties to write on: either the Federalists OR the Republicans. Choose whichever party interests you, or choose a party that you don’t know much about. Once you choose your party, you will assume the role of a member from that party – pretend that you are either a Federalist or Republican from the 1790s. There are three parts to this assignment:

1. You will write a minimum of two paragraphs discussing the political, economic, and diplomatic views of your political party (based on the content from the textbook). Your political views will include your perspective on state and national government (how strong or weak should they be); your economic views will include your perspective on economic directions that the nations should take (or not take); your diplomatic views will include your perspective on France and England (which nation do you support? why?).

2. You will also write a 3rd paragraph on one of the primary source readings: – If you are a Federalist, you will explain what the Alien and Sedition Acts are and give examples from the Acts that you think are necessary to support your position (ex: what parts of the Alien Acts are necessary for the survival of the United States?). -If you are a Republican, you will explain what the Kentucky Resolutions are and give examples from the Resolutions that you think are necessary to support your position (ex: what role should states play when the national government oversteps its authority?).

3. Respond to at least one posting by another student. Use the voice of your political party when responding to another posting (ex: if you are a Federalist, then either support a fellow Federalist or attack a Republican – with respect, of course). Be sure that your response is analytical and includes material from the reading (ex: if you are a Republican, why do you despise a Federalist?).

This means that you will write a MINIMUM OF 3 PARAGRAPHS that discuss your particular political party’s perspective AND respond to at least on other posting. Your answers should reflect the main points from the textbook and primary source document for your political party, and be sure to use examples from the readings to support your main points. Proof your answer before submitting it as errors in grammar and spelling will lead to a deduction in points. Use quotations when using the exact wording from the reading. Most of your answer should be in your own words and be sure to cite any quotes used in your answer

· Appropriate history-related websites and databases (not Wikipedia)

· Historical documentaries

· History textbooks

Please contact a NOVA librarian or your instructor if you have questions on locating sources.

3. Students will submit an annotated bibliography in Module 5

4. Descriptions of the 5 sites or events should be at least 300-500 words for each site or event presented. The descriptions should accurately demonstrate the cultural achievements and significance of the society studied and presented.

A. Consider utilizing photos of the site or an event that may have been similar to help illustrate your narrative

5. The student will present their travel narrative and descriptions of location, along with any accompanying images (properly label and cited) on a digital platform of their choice. Here are some options:

A. Google sites

B. Blogger

C. Wix

D. Weebly

E. WordPress

F. Tumblr

G. TravelDiaries

Important: If you choose to create a website, make sure that you make your website publicly accessible or the instructor won’t be able to access it for purposes of grading. Do not make it private or require a password for access. Some website creation sites, such as Wix, require you to “publish” your site before other can view it. (In the case of Wix and likely the others, you need to remember to “publish” after all of your edits, no matter how minor.)
