  1. How did the Industrial Revolution transform people’s daily lives? Be sure to include sanitation and labor.
  2. How do Burke and Hare illustrate the changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution?
  3. The following quote from Jaques Barzun’s From Dawn to Decadence addresses the railroad. Discuss the impact of the railroad on daily lives or on the Industrial Revolution. In what ways did locomotion create a technological transformation for humanity as a whole – at least in the areas where it existed?
    • “At first, machinery affected only those who organized its use and the men and women who worked in factories. But by 1830 a different type of machine came into being that changed the life and the minds of all peoples. The memory of it is nearly gone, but it was the completest change in human experience since the nomadic tribes became rooted in one spot to grow grain and raise cattle; it was in effect a reversal of that settling down. Locomotion by the force of steam, the railroad, uprooted mankind and made of it individual nomads again.” (Jacques Barzun, From Dawn to Decadence: 1500 to the Present: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life (New York: HarperCollins, 2000), 539)

Cultural Comparison Paper

The cultural comparison paper compares three civilizations of the student’s choosing. This paper must be 600 words in length. Students may use sources other than their book, and are encouraged to do so.

Directions:

A student will pick any three civilizations covered in this class.  Students will compare and contrast all three civilizations in terms of the following:

1) Social and Cultural: Examine everyday activities, social order, and classes within the culture. (Example: how were women represented and treated in each culture?)

2) Political and Economic: What were their political structures like? What were their economies like? (Example: how did their political organizations differ?)

3) Diplomatic and Military: How much influence over the world did they have? How did they interact with their neighbors?  (Example: Were there major wars during their histories? Were they conquerors? Were they conquered? )

You can compare and contrast other themes within the three cultures you looked at as well; however, students must cover these themes in their essay.

The essay should be written in collegiate format (organized with an introduction, thesis, body paragraphs and conclusion.) The paper must be in proper APA format.

Why and How to Study History

Instructions

Then consider why do you think people study history? (Don’t be trite here – it’s much more than “to learn from their mistakes”). Consider why you are required to study history to earn an AA or AS degree. Do you think the study of history helps you to be a better person or contribute to society? If so, how so? If not, why not?

To help you formulate an answer as to why history is important, consider the arguments made by Steven Kreis at the History Guide:  Why Study History? and Peter Stearns’ argument published by the American Historical Association: Why Study History? (1998). Do you agree or disagree with these scholars and why?

Finally, there is much confusion on how to study history as well. History is primarily examined through the study of documents. Review the “How to Study History” section in the eText, then select one primary and one secondary source related to our course content. Include those sources properly formatted in one of the approved styles and explain how a historian might use these sources.

As noted in the Grading and Evaluation page of the Syllabus, you should write at least 300 words in your response.

Reply to at least two other students’ posts with substantive responses and be sure to write at least 100-150 words and further the conversation by posing a question or suggesting a new source or fact on the subject to your correspondent. Replies to your instructor are optional for Reflection discussions, but encouraged!

See the Course Schedule and Course Rubrics pages for due dates and grading information.

Write an Essay

Primary Source Essay:

In this assignment you will write an essay that includes analysis of a primary source or sources. Primary sources are documents or other artifacts that provide first-hand accounts of the time period that you are studying. Primary sources are created by participants in or witnesses to events at the time or close to the time that they occurred. Primary sources include laws, treaties, speeches, diaries, memoirs, letters, reports, government or other records, creative works, and for later periods, photographs, films etc.

Select ONE of the assignments below and write an essay answering the posted questions. Integrate what you have learned about the era from your text with your analysis of the primary source reading. Although you will be presented with several questions, integrate your responses into a unified whole.

An excellent primary source essay will do the following:

  • Explore relevant sections of the primary source(s) assigned.
  • Use and incorporate ideas, issues, or explanations from the primary source(s) assigned.
  • Specifically answer the question or questions asked. Do what the question requires (compare, evaluate etc.).
  • Briefly identify people, events, or terms mentioned.
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of the historical context of the primary source(s) that can be found from the Spielvogel text.
  • Support all general statements with specific evidence (examples, events, quotations).
  • Organize ideas into a logical sequence.
  • Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Formatting directions:

  • Do not include a cover page.
  • Put your name at the top of your essay.
  • Double-space and use a standard (Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri) twelve point font.
  • Indent the first line of every paragraph. Include a Works Cited Page as part of the document if appropriate.
  • Spell check your essay before you submit it.
  • Submit by clicking “Primary Source Essay One” above.

 Assignment Selections:

A. READ the following selection about the battle of Thermopylae from Herodotus’ The Histories:
http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/ancient/herodotus-xerxes.html

Using the Spielvogel textbook and The Histories write an essay of 4-5 pages answering the following questions:

  • Who is Herodotus and what is his significance?
  • What incidents in the primary source portray Xerxes as superstitious and tyrannical?
  • What do the events of the battle tell you about Spartan culture?
  • What values of Greek society does Herodotus’ narrative seem to promote?
  • Evaluate the significance of the Persian invasions on Greek political and intellectual development. What impact did they have on the development of the Athenian and Spartan states?

B. Or READ “Pericles’ Funeral Oration” from the The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. You may use any book source for this that you choose, but it is available at:

http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/ancient/pericles-funeralspeech.html

Also Read The Melian Debate at:

https://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/melian.htm

(You must read and analyze BOTH primary sources.)

Using the Spielvogel textbook and both primary sources write an essay of 4-5 pages answering the following questions:

  • What was the role of Athens in the culture and political life Greece in the fifth century B.C.E.?
  • Compare and contrast the depiction of Athenian democracy by Pericles with how a modern historian would evaluate Athenian democracy.
  • Contrast the Athenian statements to the Melians with the sentiments expressed by Pericles in his funeral oration. Does Athens seem to live up to beliefs that Pericles expresses in his funeral oration?
  • How do these readings help you to evaluate Athenian values and limitations?
