Essay for two part reading analyzation

September 8, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

this assignment will consist of the three segments explored in this class: History, Arts, and Social Sciences. Using our final text, The Beast: Riding the Rails and Dodging Narcos, you will need to complete following two prompts:

1. The author of our text, Óscar Martínez, relies heavily on the use of location (such as Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Arizona) when writing about the migration experience. Using one of the chapters from our text as reference, write a short prose poem exploring themes and the location from that chapter. A prose poem does not feature line breaks but does feature symbols, metaphors, and other figures of speech common in poetry. For examples of prose poetry see Ars Poetica by José Olivarez and The Poetry Foundation.

Your short poem should be between 250 – 500 words, written in complete lines, and should take into consideration ideas, objects, and concepts from your chosen chapter. Consider the perspective you are writing from, for example, are you writing from the perspective of the immigrant, the narco, some other observer, the border, the desert, the train, etc.

2. The theme of violence is found throughout our text. In ashort essay, explore the ways in which violence is at the root of migration. Consider the ways in which violence is experienced differently during the migration journey depending on who the migrant is (man, woman, trans, child, adult, etc.). How has migration shifted during the Donald Trump era in comparison to when our writer wasdoing his reporting? What are the challenges that the most vulnerable migrants face during the migration journey? Finally, consider the following quote regarding the pornography of violence.

Bourgois (2001) writes, “I feared contributing to a ‘pornography of violence’ that submerges the structural causes of urban destitution under lurid details of blood, aggression and gore. [Authors] risk contributing to a pornography of violence that reinforces negative perceptions of subordinated groups in the eyes of unsympathetic readers.” Does our text, The Beast, contribute to the pornography of violence? Why or why not?

Your double-spaced essay should be between 1300-1500 words. You should use The Beast as your main source but are welcome to include outside sources so long as you areciting them correctly. You will need to submit both prompts on a single document via ilearn using the Turnitin link that I will provide. You should include two separate titles, one title for your poem and another for the essay. You should also start your essay on a new page following your poem.

I will be checking plagiarizing score! Make sure to cite!

P. 60 Case 1

The Makah tribe claim to have hunted gray whales for more than 2,000 years. They stopped in the 1920s due to a decline in the number of gray whales. Now they want to return to the hunt to provide food for their tribe and to restore the young men’s sense of discipline and pride in their traditions. Proponents of the hunt claim that majority of the tribe support the hunt, which is expected to take fewer than the five whales they are permitted by law to kill. Tribal leader’s claim they will take pregnant or nursing females some Makah elders disagree, however, pointing out that the tribe survived for most of the twentieth century without eating whale’s meat and claiming that there are better ways to instill pride and discipline. The environmental community argues that the whale hunt is immoral because it violates the whale right to exist on the planet. Is it appropriate for nonmembers of the Makah tribe-for example, students in your class- to evaluate the morality of the Makah whale hunt? Explain

Article Title: _____________________

Author’s Name: ___________________ Name: _____________________

Reading an Article

This worksheet is intended to serve as a guide for reading a scholarly article. Completing this sheet as you read an article will help you understand the point the author is making and how he or she has gone about doing so. It also provides an opportunity to evaluate the clarity and effectiveness of the article.

1) Identify what kind of article it is. Check all that apply and be ready to explain why.

a. ____ New Research. Does it present research on an important topic that has not yet been studied to any real extent? Articles of this type may present new research or the analysis and translation of a significant primary source.

b. ____ Old View/New View. Is the author presenting new research and/or analysis to show how previous analysis of the question under consideration is inaccurate or incorrect?

c. ____ Review Article. Is the author presenting summaries of past research on a topic (usually one that has a long history of study) by a variety of different scholars, in order to show the state of research on the topic?

d. ____ Standard Textbook or Encyclopedia Entry. Does the author seem to be presenting information in a way that suggests it is generally accepted in the field as correct? Articles of this type usually lack references to other published work and are relatively general and brief.

2) Identify unknown vocabulary and technical terms. Read through the article, and at the arrow below, list all the unknown words and phrases you encounter. Look up the words you find and add the definition next to each. If you can’t find the meaning of a word (often the case with foreign words), offer a tentative definition for it based on context clues or any other means you can. Bring these to class for discussion.

3) Identify the author’s point. Study the introduction and conclusion of the article and determine what the author’s point is. Authors should state this clearly, but sometimes they make their readers work for it.

a. If it is New Research (a. above), make note of how the author states the question or questions she or he examined and what his answer to the question is.

b. If it is an Old View/New View article (b. above), identify the other scholars the author is responding to, what the old view is, and what the new view is that he or she is offering.

c. If it is a review article, identify the purpose for the author gives for presenting the review, and note if he proposes directions for further research.

d. If it is a Standard Entry (d. above), you need only summarize the material presented, unless a clear point can be determined.

State the author’s point and other information requested above after the arrow below. Be as detailed as you need to be.

4) Determine the organization of the article. First, if the article has subheadings, identify each subheading with its page number. If there are no subheadings, work through the article paragraph by paragraph and divide the article into subsections that you assign subheadings to, based on what you see the author doing in each subsection. Give the page number on which each of your subsections begins. Then, sketch out a rough outline of the article using the subheadings you have, and briefly describe the sub-point the author is making under each subheading and what evidence the author uses to make each point. Be sure to distinguish between what the author is saying and what the other scholars he is quoting are saying. Also note, if you can, why the author has chosen to organize the article the way he or she has. Provide the information requested above at the arrow below. Give as much detail as you need.

5) Give an evaluation of the article. At the arrow below, answer the following questions in as much detail as you need:

a. How effective has the author been in making his or her point (as determined in 2) above)?

b. Does the article make the point the author intended, and why or why not?

c. Was the article logically organized and clearly presented? If so, what was effective about it, and if not, what problems were there? If you found the article confusing, explain why, giving specific examples with page numbers in your explanation.

d. State what you learned from the article. What do you know now that you didn’t before? This may include information that was not part of the author’s point.

e. Finally, what questions does the article leave in your mind? What more do you think you need to know to have a fuller understanding of the subject of the article?

DIRECTIONS FOR TAKE-HOME ESSAY

Dear History 12 Student:

The take-home essay (3-5 pages) will be accepted only through Canvas.

For the final essay, due on Week 14 by 11:59pm, use the following two primary sources to answer the prompts below:

1) 18th Amendment

2) 21th Amendment

Prompt: When the 18th Amendment passed in 1920, the U.S. government made it illegal to buy, sell, and make alcohol in this country. Throughout the 1920’s, most of the general public made it aware that they were not excited about this amendment, which eventually led to its repeal in 1933 by the 21st amendment. Trace the history of these two amendments using the questions below as guides. Be sure to write you essay in the traditional scholarly essay format. A proper essay should contain an introduction with a thesis statement, several body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph with several outside, reliable research sources to support your arguments. Do Not Use Wikipedia.

Provide the context for each primary source within its historical era. Consider answering these questions:

· What year did these amendments take place?

· What do the amendments generally state?

· Who approved/pushed for the 18th amendment, and why (e.g. temperance movements, anti-immigrant feelings, religious revivalism, Anti-Saloon League)?

· Who approved/pushed for the 21st amendment, and why (e.g. failure to enforce sobriety, few law enforcement officers, cost of enforcing, the rise of organized crime, etc.)?

Analyze the primary sources to evaluate the significance across time in history. For example, consider these questions:

· What has changed from the first amendment to the second?

· What were the factors that brought about this change?

Analyze the historical impact on diverse groups. Consider answering the following questions:

· Who were mainly persecuted/targeted under the 18th amendment?

· Is there a specific population (e.g. immigrants, Germans, Irish)?

· Were the targeted mainly men? How about women? On which side of the argument were women mostly on? Why?

The final papers will be evaluated according to the grading rubric at the end of this document.

Please reference your textbook and lecture notes to write your essays and use only reliable academic writing (e.g. academic websites, books, academic articles and journals).

Make sure to cite your sources according to MLA or Chicago/Turabian writing manuals. Also, review East Los Angeles College’s library definition of plagiarism by clicking here . Remember, if you use more than three sequential words of another person, website, etc, cite the author. If you paraphrase an original idea or concept of another, cite the author.
