Interpreting an Individual Supply Schedule

Part One
Sally Thomas is an entrepreneur. She makes hand-made quilts and sells them at craft shows and at her home studio. Below is a market supply schedule she constructed. Answer the questions that appear below it.

Price per quilt Quantity Supplied Per Month
$300.00 1
$400.00 2
$500.00 3
$600.00 4
$700.00 5
  1. How many quilts will Sally supply at $500.00 per quilt?
  2. Are any other factors besides price taken into account with the market supply schedule she has constructed?
  3. Several situations are listed below that Sally has encountered in her business. Explain how each of these situations might alter the supply of quilts.
    1. Sally purchases a new sewing machine that helps her produce quilts in less time.
    2. Sally anticipates an increase in prices for quilts in three months.
    3. There are twice as many quilt suppliers as there were one year ago.

Part Two
Now think of something you might be able to make and sell. Construct your own individual market schedule. List five prices and the quantity you would supply at each price. As you do this, remember to consider how much time you have available because you still need to be able to keep up with your school work and other activities. At the same time, consider how much money you will be making on each and what your financial goals might be. Be sure to provide a description of the item you would supply as well as a paragraph describing three factors that most likely will influence the supply of your item. Include an explanation of how each factor might influence your decision on how much to supply of the item.

Greek history paper

Paper – Topic

Literature can often be used as a socializing force. That is, a society will often use a text to reinforce social attitudes, to teach youths, and sometimes to oppress people.  Similarly, a text can often have a socializing effect without intending to do so, or can actually challenge social attitudes. Keep in mind that the reinforcement or challenging of social or cultural attitudes can happen without governmental leaders, parents/families, or individuals realizing it.

For this paper, you must use Aeschylus’s Oresteia or Aristophanes’s Lysistrata plus one other text from the course and discuss the ways these texts reinforce or challenge ancient Greek attitudes, ideologies, taboos, morals, etc.

Hint: This topic will be easier if you choose your texts based on a similar theme. In other words, with only four pages, it will be very difficult to argue how Aeschylus does X and Euripides does Y. It will be easier to show how Plato and Euripides both do Z.

Paper – Guidelines

This paper is worth a significant proportion of your final grade, and things like having a strong thesis statement, using direct quotes to support your argument, clean grammar, etc., are important parts of grading. It’s always sad for me when I have to dock points from a paper because a student keeps spelling a title or writer’s name wrong, or because the student has no central thesis. Treat this paper seriously. I strongly encourage you to visit the Undergraduate Writing Center in Boucke (Links to an external site.) .

Here are several guidelines to keep in mind:

· Present a strong, relevant thesis statement.

· Make a clear argument that is the focus of the entire essay.

· And make sure that it relates to the topic above.

· Use direct quotes and specific examples to support your thesis and properly cite the quotes (e.g. book number and line number, act number and line number, etc.).

· Use at least two different ancient sources and properly cite the sources.

· Do NOT not use outside sources. Focus on the primary sources we’ve read in the class.

· Make sure that your paper is in final draft form (e.g. appropriate level of formality, correct spelling, clean grammar, proper formatting, etc.).

Paper – Formatting

It is essential that you follow the required formatting requirements. Failure to follow these requirements will result in penalties.

Your final draft must have the following characteristics:

· 3-4 pages, double-spaced (no extra spaces between paragraphs)

· 12 pt. Times New Roman font (this is no longer MS Word’s default font!)

· 1” margins

· Underlined or italicized title

· The document should be in one of the following formats:Microsoft Word document (*.doc or *.docx), PDF file (*.pdf), RTF file (*.rtf)

You learned about the sculptural process of subtractive carving from stone.  We considered Michelangelo’s Awakening Slave as an artistic illustration of the physical act of carving.  We also briefly touched upon how Awakening Slave possibly represents the act of creation—maybe even god-like creation—in that Michelangelo was able to seemingly turn stone into flesh.

You will now pretend to be Michelangelo and compose a discussion board thread that mimics a first-person journal entry.  Your thread/journal entry will elaborate on your (Michelangelo’s) artistic process (carving) and your thoughts regarding the symbolism of “unfinished” sculptures like Awakening Slave.

Your thread/journal entry must be 300-words long.

*Please note that many of your weekly discussion board assignments will require you to post a response to at least two of your classmates’ threads.  Yet, this discussion board assignment does not require such responses.  Even though responses are not mandatory for this assignment, you are free to comment on the thoughts and theories presented by your fellow classmates.

THIS WEEK: SOMETHING DIFFERENT Please locate an image (artwork, political cartoon, etc.) from the era between 1848 and 1871 to include with your reply. In other words, find visual representation of the topic in your answer or an image from the era that represents nationalism related to your answer. Let’s spice up our text-based answers a bit.

You should be able to add an attachment in your reply. If you can’t do that, try to add a link to an image. (Please post safe links, no explicit or otherwise off topic images or links allowed!) Provide a short caption of the image so we know how it applies. The caption does not have to be attached to the image, but it can be if you want to do it that way. Feel free to be creative, or not. 🙂 If you are unable to do this portion of the assignment for technical reasons, please let me know over email.

QUESTIONS:

1) From Carl Shurz “Reminiscences”

Carl Shurz was a young German excited by the revolutionary spirit of 1848. Describe his desires for Germany, and identify his expressions of nationalism. What did he participate in to promote German nationalism?

2) From Giuseppe Mazzini, “Europe: Its Condition and Prospects”

What is the difference between the “princely nationality of aristocracies or royal races” and “the nationality of the peoples,” according to Mazzini? How is his concept of “the social”related to nationalization?

3)From Sándor Petőfi (1823-1849)The National Song of Hungary, 1848.

The third stanza of the song says: “A miserable wretch is he / Who fears to die, my land for thee! / His worthless life who thinks to be / Worth more than thou, sweet liberty!” How would you interpret these words? Is there a connection between this and Robespierre’s essay “On the Principles of Government” from 1793?

Clair de Lune Analysis

Instructions

1. Re-read Take a Closer Look: Exploring Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune”  in your textbook.

2. Carefully listen to the piano piece “Clair de Lune” and critically examine its components, style, context, and influence. Listen for and try identifying at least TWO basic elements of music described in the required Module 6 textbook pages. You may also wish to refer back to the Module 6 Online Exploration resources as well as the required pages in your textbook for Module 6.

3. Read the essay “Musical Impressionism: The Early History of the Term” by Ronald L. Byrnside from The Musical Quarterly, Vol. 66, No. 4 (October, 1980), pp. 522-537, published by Oxford University Press here in Module 6.

4.  Now that you’ve carefully examined and researched the work of music, write and submit the finished essay using at least three fully developed paragraphs and at least 500 words, in which you:

  • Describe Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” analytically. In doing this, identify at least TWO basic elements of music described in the Module 6 required textbook pages “The Basic Elements of Music.”
  • Identify the “mood” of the song. What kind of “Impression” does it give you?
  • Explain whether “Clair de Lune” is Apollonian or Dionysian, and provide evidence supporting your argument.
  • Knowing that “Clair de Lune” belongs to a musical school known as Impressionism (based on your research) describe the similarities and differences between Impressionism as an artistic movement (as we learned about in Module 5) and as a movement in music. Use evidence from “Clair de Lune” and your exploration of Impressionism to support your arguments.
  • Conclude by commenting on whether or not you believe that Music and Visual Art should share an artistic classification such as “Impressionism.” In other words, does referring to “Clair de Lune” (the song) AND Claude Monet’s “Impression Sunrise” (the painting) both as “Impressionism” make sense? Or is this just an example of Academicians in Humanities making an unnecessary connection?
  • Be sure to use and cite “Musical Impressionism: The Early History of the Term” by Ronald L. Byrnside and/or another essay you have already found and read as a research source article concerning the musical school and movement known as Impressionism.
