Must  be from an American History topic from the period covered by the course  and approved by instructor. (1301 covers pre-Columbian America to  1865).  4-6 typed pages in length in a 12 point font and double spaced.   Failure to meet minimum length will result in multiple letter grade  point reduction.  Bibliography and Cover page are not counted for  length, nor do pictures, lists or any tertiary or non-related  information.  Format must be Turabian or Chicago.  Cite sources, number  pages, and provide name and class information.   Student must have at  least three sources, none  of which may be the textbook or instructor lecture. Sources must be of  good quality (no wikis or entertainment websites) and include authors or  be attached to academic journals. Papers must be turned in through the  Turn-it-In link on the class webpage, failure or refusal to do so will  result in an automatic ZERO for the paper.

You  will be expected to conclude the paper with a conclusion that  summarizes events and makes a moral judgement about those events  answering the questions: 1. Were those behind the events demonstrating  personal responsibility?  2. Did reason and morality play a role in the  important choices made?  3.Would you have made the same decision if you found yourself in the position of the decision maker(s)?  Why or why not? 4.If you would have acted differently, how so and why?

Try to use examples from the readings, discussing a specific person, text, or event helps (evidence!)

1. provide a clear thesis statement in your introduction. A thesis needs to stake out your position and should be followed by a sentence briefly summarizing how you intend to prove it.
2. Use at least three examples as evidence for your argument.  Devote a separate paragraph (at least) to each point.

• All general statements need to be followed by specific examples or details to elaborate the point.
• You should offer a brief description of your example to establish the context for your analysis.  Provide who, what, when, where, and how/why.
• You should explicitly tell me how this supports your argument.
• You should provide a transition to your next example by showing its connection to the current example.

For each chapter of OB, you should read the entire chapter and take notes (which you will likely use on the respective assignment, as well as in your Midterm/Final Exam studying and other course work).  Once you have finished reading the Chapter, you should look at the “Post-Reading Questions” at the end of the Chapter and CHOOSE ONE of the Post-Reading Questions answer. Alternatively, you can choose the “Journal Option” (Option 3 below). For each question set, you should write a 1-2 page typewritten response, being sure to use information directly from the documents themselves.  Each answer should also include at least one direct quotation from at least three of the sources referenced in the question (for a total of at least three quotes).  Each question set’s answer is worth a possible 2 points.  Late Assignments will NOT be accepted. 

The questions for Chapter 9 (you should CHOOSE ONE to answer in 1-2 pages) are:

1. Using the documents in this chapter, write a 1-2 page essay discussing some of the positives and negatives of westward expansion? For example, what was the relationship between whites and Native Americans like in the second half of the nineteenth century? Between whites and the Chinese? You should be sure to use specific examples and quotes from the primary source documents in this chapter.
2. Pretend you are a journalist in the 1860s who has been asked to write an article about whether easterners should move to the west. Take either a pro or con stance on this issue and write your article accordingly (either convince easterners to move west, or convince them not to), being sure to use specific examples and quotes from the primary source documents in this chapter.
3. JOURNAL OPTION: Write 1-2 pages of notes on all of the documents you read in this chapter and, at the end, write down 5 questions (i.e. phrases you don’t understand, “aha!” moments you had, contemporary things that you are comparing the reading to).  Please see the Journal Notes/Questions Guide (under “Files” for more guidance).  Notes/Questions should be typewritten and single-spaced.
