history paper

September 5, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

As you have gone through Unit II you have been introduced to a wonderfully complex cast of characters that are bestowed with this larger than life title “Founding Father.” We in the United States have idolized these figures since the American Revolution and one of the primary things I hope you would learn from this Unit is that they were human beings with as many character flaws as amazing talents. I hope you also recognize that the role of Founder was not simply named Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin, but included a very large number of other individuals (with names like Madison, Hamilton, Adams, and Jay) and was certainly not exclusively the domain of men. For this discussion, I would like for you to address the following questions in your discussion board posting:

Your responses should be at least one paragraph in length for EACH of these questions.

1) Who was the most interesting “Founding Father(s)” for you to learn about?

2) What made these men so unique and what characteristics made them so “human”?

3) Who was the most interesting “Founding Mother(s)” for you to learn about? Why is learning the role of colonial women and other minority groups in the Revolution important to understanding the full story of the founding of the United States of America?

Taxation and Representation

September 5, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

In the years between the end of the French and Indian War and the skirmishes at Lexington and Concord, 1763-1775, the colonies and the mother country debated the right of Parliament to legislate for the colonies. The British claimed that Parliament held this right without question, while the colonies insisted that only a body which they actually elected could tax them. While the British espoused the commonly-held notion that Parliament represented all British possessions virtually, the colonists drew on their experiences with their colonial legislatures, maintaining that the only true representation was actual representation. In this discussion you will read the accounts below, which are written from either a British or a colonial point of view and in a statement of 3-4 paragraphs select a position in the debate over taxation and representation. (Meets Course Learning Objectives: 3 and 9)

Suggested Readings

  • Patrick Henry: Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death. Yale University. Avalon Project. http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/patrick.asp
  • Samuel Adams, The Rights of the Colonists. http://history.hanover.edu/texts/adamss.html

  • Great Britain : Parliament: The Quartering Act, June 2, 1774 Yale University. Avalon Project. http://avalon.law.yale.edu/18th_century/quartering_act_1774.asp
  • Soam Jenyns, The Objections to the taxation Consider’d, 1765: http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/documents/1751-1775/soame-jenyns-the-objections-to-the-taxation-considerd-1765.php

Focus Question I

Use the following questions to guide your thinking and to prepare for the class discussion.

  1. According to the documents that state the Parliamentary position (those from the Parliamentary Acts and Jenyns), what rights did the mother country have over the colonies? If these documents mention the right to tax, what specifically do they say about this right?
  2. Do you discern in the documents written by the British an acknowledgement of political rights belonging to the colonists?
  3. What do the colonial leaders (Henry, Adams and the members of the Continental Congress) say about the right of taxation?
  4. According to these men, what political rights belonged exclusively to the colonies? Were any powers to be shared by the colonial legislatures and Parliament.

     FOCUS QUESTION II

1. What was the colonial reaction to the Stamp Act?  Include acts by (a) colonial legislatures (b) colonial merchants and (c) colonists themselves.

2. How was colonial reaction to the Coercive or Intolerable Acts different from their response to the Stamp Act?  Why do you think this led to violence?

3. Not all colonists joined the protests.  Why do you think some colonists resisted overt action against their legitimate government?

4. Imagine that you were living in the colonies at the time and you had the  same station in life you now have, how do you think that you would have reacted?  Be honest, think of you attitude today toward the authority of the national government, and to taxes levied by that government.

Directions

Post your position statement. After you make your initial posting, you should respond to the arguments contained in one other posting. This second posting should be approximately one paragraph in length; use available evidence to refute that character’s position and further support your own role.

REMEMBER TO ANSWER BOTH FOCUS QUESTION TOPICS.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

OK… just kidding….

Disturbing though, huh?

Are you beginning to understand just how much is left out of our histories?

From early childhood, we are taught about this brave group of individuals who courageously set out to find a new life for themselves in the “New World.” A life where they could be free to worship and live as they chose…and when they got here they had to labor and toil day and night in the midst of an inhospitable and unfamiliar land. Luckily, however, the kindly natives befriended them and helped them survive their first winter here in their new home. And when harvest time came the following year, they all sat down together at the table of brotherhood holding hands, enjoying the fruits of their labor and singing Kum Ba Yah….Does this sound about right?

The Pilgrims… a small group of people we thought were seeking religious freedom when they came to this country…we thought they were simply an example of moral, upstanding, Christian leaders responsible for much of the foundational ten- ants which lay at the core of this country… or were they? What have you learned about this group of people now that you’ve read Loewen’s chapter?

Some of the issues I find interesting about this group:

  •   They were not seeking religious freedom when they came, they had already found it…in the Netherlands.
  •   They may have hijacked the Mayflower…and in today’s language, what do we usually call a group of people who hijack a ship or plane?
  •   When they got here, they did not have to “tame” the wilder- ness…where did they actually settle? In Squanto’s old village. The homes were already built, crops planted…
  •   When they got here what did they do immediately? Begin looking for gold….
  •   And they looked in some of the most interesting places…like graves.
  •   Because they began immediately looking for gold and not preparing themselves for the months ahead they get themselves in a predica- ment…and many resort to cannibalism….yes, cannibalism .
    (Happy Thanksgiving!)
Many of us remember the Thanksgiving plays we participated in as children in el- ementary school…where we made the construction paper hats with the big buckles and buckles for our shoes, or the construction paper feather head- dresses…or how we would trace the outline of our hand onto our drawing paper with our crayons and magically it would morph itself into a turkey…we spend much, much time and energy on this “creation” story….
Shouldn’t we include some smallpox ravaged natives, complete with blistering pustules, to represent the 90% of the entire Native American population (in the North and South American continents) wiped out by disease? After all, this is part of the Pilgrims’ story isn’t it?
Shouldn’t we include the story of Metacom’s War (named after the son of the original Native American leader who helped the Pilgrims) and all of the ghastly things done to Metacom? His being drawn and quartered by the Pilgrims, them cutting off his hands and putting them on display in Boston, and removing his head and taking it back to Plymouth to mount it atop a big, long stick in the mid- dle of town square where it would remain on display for 25 years? I kid you not….
Should we not include slavery? As the Puritans were one of the main North Ameri- can contributors to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade-an institution responsible for the loss of 50 million people from Africa through enslavement and death?
Why do we spend so much time on this group of people in school? Perhaps even more importantly, why do we spend so much time on this Disney-esque version of the Pilgrims? What purpose, what lesson, do you believe studying the Pilgrims in this way serves?

1. Please post an initial response to these questions of at least 150 words 2. Reply(2or3sentences)toatleast3otherstudents’initialpostings.

Week Two Open Forum

Prepare: Take a few minutes to think about the material that we’ve covered in this course so far.

Reflect: Reflect on what you found interesting, surprising, or confusing in this past week. Did anything that you learned cause you to understand an issue and event differently? Have you discovered any habits or tips that help you to complete your course work more effectively or efficiently?

Write: This discussion forum is an opportunity for you to explore topics that interest you, share critical insights and questions that you are working with, share your struggles and triumphs, and discuss difficulties that may have arisen this week, hopefully finding solutions. Your initial post should describe your experiences in the course this past week, prompting further discussion. You should address at least two of the following questions:

  • What struck you in particular as you explored the course materials this week?
  • What insights have you had?
  • What have you been struggling with?
  • What questions have come up for you at this point?
  • Do you have any helpful tips that you’ve picked up in this course or in a past course?
  • Do you have questions about the assignment that your classmates might be able to help with? (If you have a question for the instructor, be sure to contact your instructor through email or in the Ask Your Instructor Forum).

You are required to post at least 100 total words in this forum this week. You can post one time or ten times, the only requirements are that you post at least 100 words total and that you engage in conversation related to course content. Ask questions, answer questions, provide extra resources you found that are interesting, or engage in a debate about something you learned this week. The only requirement is that your comments have to relate to the course content.

Provide a full explanation of the issues that you discuss in your posts. For example, if you write that you had difficulty finding sources for your Final Project, explain where in the process of finding sources you had difficulty. Was it choosing a database to search? Thinking of search terms? Did your search return too many sources that were not relevant to your topic? Did your search return too few results?

 CSTU 101- Western Culture

Background to the assignment: At the beginning of the Medieval Age, there was a synthesis of three different cultures within Western culture. There was the classical culture, Christian culture, and pagan culture. Each made adjustments as they interacted and came together, and over hundreds of years, they finally settled into a balanced Western culture for a time period.

Description of the assignment: In America today, there is a synthesis of different cultures as well. There is the secular culture, Christian culture, and other religious cultures. In a logical discussion, describe what a possible balanced culture might look like in America in the future. Explain in an orderly manner why you came to these conclusions. It may help to read the essay in the back of your textbook titled. “The Future of Western Culture”. This assignment requires an opinion; you must clarify your position. If you include sources, cite them in current APA format. This assignment must be 250–300 words and must include the word count in parentheses. Submit a draft of your Learning Activity to SafeAssign for feedback a few days before the assignment is due.

Art History

September 5, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

By the due date assigned, respond to the assigned discussion questions and submit your responses to the appropriate Discussion Area. Start reviewing and responding to your classmates as early in the week as possible.

Question 1: Renaissance and Baroque Sculpture in Italy

The biblical hero David was a popular subject for sculpture and painting throughout the Renaissance and into the Baroque period. By studying, comparing, and contrasting sculptures of David created in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries, you can begin to see the stylistic changes that occurred across these centuries. In a minimum of 3 well-developed paragraphs, compare and contrast the following 3 sculptures of David:

  1. Early Renaissance: Donatello. David. 1446-1460.
  2. High Renaissance: Michelangelo. David. 1501-1504.
  3. Baroque. Gianlorenzo Bernini. David. 1623.

In your comparison, discuss:

  • What specific visual similarities do you observe in these three sculptures?
  • What specific differences do you see? Consider the representation of the figure, additional objects portrayed, and the role of the viewer for each sculpture
  • How has the attitude of David changed between these three representations?
  • How is each sculpture representative of the time period and style in which it was created?

Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific works of art that you have read about this week, talking about how they illustrate and support your ideas.

Question 2: Dutch Baroque Painting

As we learned this week, Dutch Baroque art showed the influence of Protestantism and the middle-class merchants and traders who served as patrons. Dutch Baroque artists created portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and genre scenes of domestic life.

In a minimum of 2 well developed paragraphs, discuss how the following paintings reflect the social and historical context of sixteenth-century Holland. Consider the influence of religion, commerce, social structure, and/or patrons of the art in your response. Offer specific examples of how the subject of each painting reflects the society and culture in which it was created.

  1. Frans Hals, Officers of the Haarlem Militia Company of Saint Adrian, c. 1627
  2. Rembrandt van Rijn, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp, 1632
  3. Johannes Vermeer, Woman Holding a Balance, c. 1664

Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific works of art that you have read about this week, talking about how they illustrate and support your ideas.

Respond to both questions as thoroughly as possible, making sure to use information from the readings and the lectures. All responses should be in complete sentence form, using proper spelling and grammar.

As soon as possible, review and comment on the work of two of your peers (click the rubric below to learn how to achieve the most credit). In your comments, consider areas you would suggest for expansion or clarification.

THE MUSEUM PAPER ( Art history )

September 5, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

ART HISTORY 305

FALL 2015

MUSEUM PAPER REQUIREMENTS

ALL PAPERS ARE DUE IN CLASS THURSDAY, NOV. 19

(LATE PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED)

Please read the instructions very carefully

Visit the Getty Center, the Norton Simon, MOCA or LACMA.

YOU MUST GO TO ONE OF THESE MUSEUMS IN PERSON.

You will want to bring this sheet of the museum paper instructions with you to the museum so that you won’t forget to list any of the details that I mention here.

1. Select one work of art to write about. It can be something that strikes you as beautiful, interesting or thought provoking, and hopefully something that spurs thought about another work of art that you have seen in your online text.

2. In your own words, describe the work of art in detail. Describe the gallery setting in detail and how the object is presented in the museum setting. For example, is it in a case or on a pedestal? Does the object look different in natural light? Mention how it relates to the other objects around it, and describe the surrounding objects carefully, as they are all related in the room’s thematic display. Name at least three other nearby artworks carefully. Be careful to list the date of all artworks discussed.

3. Compare the work of art that you choose at the museum to something that you can see is very similar or very different from the text. Again, that’s just one artwork from the museum, one from the text. This means that you will write a comparison of the work in the museum to an object in the text, noting stylistic differences or similarities between the two, or perhaps a common subject matter, or a very different use of color or style (artistic technique) between the two works. You might want to get my advice on your selections to be sure that you’re on the right track. Email me with a few museum picks and text comparisons, and I’ll steer you in the right direction.

4. Discuss the functions of your two chosen works of art, their methods of creation, and focus on what is important or historical about them. Discuss how your selections reflect the culture and the time in which they were created. This means that you must include quite a bit of history about the country/region that it was created in, and a “taste” of the times (was it made during a period of war, famine, artistic rebirth, etc.)

5. In addition, provide at least one paragraph in which you give a personal response to the artwork that you saw at the museum. Discuss your reaction to seeing it in person compared to the experience of viewing images in reproduction. Discuss any emotional response you may have to the work.

6. Do additional research on your artwork. Include information about the stylistic movement that your artwork is identified with (Impressionism, Pop Art, the Baroque, etc.) This is an exercise in viewing art, and understanding its context.

7. All references must be documented with proper citations. That includes museum placards, the textbook, my notes, or any other written sources such as journals, websites or books. Also provide a bibliography, and format it in Chicago style . If you are unsure how to footnote, just Google “Chicago Footnotes” or “Chicago bibliography,” and numerous help sites will appear.

8. All papers must include a cover page, page numbers, an introduction, subsequent paragraphs, and a conclusion. Do not title all of the parts of your paper separately, but write your paper as one continuous exploration of your subject.

9. Your paper must be typed, double-spaced, and in Times New Roman in size 12 font. Please proofread your paper carefully.

10. Your museum paper MUST be at least 4 pages in length. If it is 3.75 you will receive no credit for this assignment. This 4 page length refers to the text only, and does not include your cover page, an illustrations page or bibliography.

11. Watch for plagiarism! This means NO cutting and pasting of information of any kind. Put data in your own words, then footnote every time you take information from any outside source. You should have dozens of footnotes for a paper of this size. If there is ANY plagiarism, you will get a ZERO on your paper without a chance to re-do the work.

12. Make an effort!

PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU NEED ANY ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE WITH YOUR PAPER; THIS MUST BE DONE WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE DUE DATE, AND NOT THE WEEK BEFORE.

YOU WILL NOT PASS THIS CLASS WITHOUT TURNING IN THE MUSEUM PAPER.
