Part Two: Essay (100 points)

You are required to answer one of three essay questions described below. The essay portion must be 4-5 pages in length, double-spaced, numbered, include 1 inch margins, use 12 point Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman font.

Your essay must include a Works Cited page. The citation style of the Works Cited page may be either Chicago, APA, or MLA. The selected citations must be appropriate to the exam topic and the citations must support the assertions made in the exam.

Your essay will include three main parts—the Thesis/Introduction, Argument, and Conclusion.

The Introduction section should clearly state the thesis within the first 1-2 paragraphs. The thesis must be relevant and appropriate to the argument and demonstrate an accurate and complete understanding of the question. This section should make it clear which question you are answering, but it should do more than restate the question by offering a brief response and it should be free of grammar and spelling errors.

The Argument section (3-4 pages) should incorporate pertinent details from the assigned readings but you may also use outside readings. The section must provide relevant historical evidence to support the thesis and the key claims made in the argument as needed. It should maintain focus and avoid sidetracking. It should present your answer to the question clearly and concisely in an organized manner and it should be free of grammar and spelling errors.

The Conclusion section should be in the last part of your essay exam within the last 1-2 paragraphs. It should briefly restate the thesis and summarize the main points of the argument. It should also demonstrate insight and understanding regarding the question asked and it should be free of grammar and spelling errors.

A scoring rubric for the essay portion is included below. Please answer one of the following essay questions:

1. Examine the impact that slavery had on the lives of enslaved women in America?

2. Interrogate the role of the Harlem Renaissance (1919-1940) on the freedom struggles in America and around the world?

3. Booker T. Washington believed that practical education was the route to freedom for Black/African people in America. Do you agree or disagree with this assertion?

Purpose:  The purpose of this assignment is to analyze the Populist platform as a reform agenda and ascertain when some of its proposals were later adopted (at the state or national level).  Doing so will help you practice skills that are essential to your success in this course and in professional life beyond school, such as chronological reasoning and contextualization.  You will also become more knowledgeable about Populism as a reform movement and how reform movements create change.

Task:

  • First, skim the following document for analysis:  People’s Party, “Omaha Platform,” July 4, 1892, http://historymatters.gmu.edu/d/5361/.
  • Second, find in the document the following elements of the Populist platform, and note their location in the platform (e.g., “Transportation”):
    • Graduated income tax
    • Guarantee of safe deposit of money in banks.
    • Adoption of secret ballot.
    • Initiative and referendum.
    • Limit President to one term
    • Direct election of Senators to U.S. Congress
    • Immigration restriction
    • Public ownership of railroads, telephone, telegraph.
  • Third, using an internet search, identify when and where these proposals were adopted in American history. Some were adopted at the national level; some were adopted by some but not all states.
  • Fourth, using Tiki Toki’s Online Timeline Maker, create a timeline illustrating when and where these proposals were adopted. Include in the timeline
    • the location of the idea in the Omaha Platform (e.g., Finance, #3; or Expression of Sentiments #4) and
    • where it was adopted (e.g., 20th Constitutional Amendment; or Wisconsin state government).
  • Copy the URL or a screenshot (see example below) of your timeline into a Word document, and post the document to the assignment dropbox.

Here’s an example of a timeline of a different period using a different site:

File submissions: Please submit your file as a DOC.X with a link and/or a screenshot of your timeline.

Criteria: You will be successful in this assignment if you:

  • (a) successfully identify where these ideas are expressed in the Omaha Platform;
  • (b) include the location in the platform for all 8 items in your timeline;
  • (c) successfully identify when and where these proposals were adopted in American history; and
  • (d) create a timeline showing when and where these proposals were adopted in American history.

This activity may use a different grading rubric than what was used in past activities. Be sure to check the grading rubric before starting.

Art History Short Answers

At least 200 words per question.

Chapter 11

The Idea of Craft Asks the class to try to define the word “craft.” What items do the students associate with the word “craft”? Are these items cheap or expensive? Does it conjure images of utilitarian goods like vases, pots, and rugs or items that are meant to be appreciated as beautiful objects? What is the difference between fine art, decorative arts, crafts, and design? During the Renaissance, craft objects were degraded as mere handiwork, not designed for serious contemplation or for aesthetic value. This distinction did not exist in other parts of the world, such as in Japan where a teacup could be considered a priceless work of art. How did the Industrial Revolution impact attitudes towards crafts and design?

Japanese Tea Ceremony The tea ceremony, a ritual performance in which the audience takes part, is a unique aspect of Japanese culture. The setting, the ceremony, the artwork, and the utensils are all supposed to conform to the principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility, and wabi, the principle of quiet simplicity. Discuss images of the Japanese Tea Ceremony. Are these aforementioned aspects present in the ceremony and the design of the tools used? What is the significance of calligraphy in the ceremony? What is the significance of the floral arrangements?

Chapter 13

Focus on the Figure This chapter contains a variety of figural artwork. Choose several images of figurative work, such as Justinian and Attendants, Walking Buddha, and Gislebertus, Last Judgment. How are the figures included in these works similar? How are they different? Are they realistic or naturalistic? What are the figures most prominent features? What is their purpose? What culture and/or time period are they from? How can you tell? What stylistic differences or similarities do you notice? What types of beliefs could be embodied by these figures?

Chapter 14

Over on the Dark Side Lewis and Lewis refer to the Northern Renaissance as “The Darker Side.” What is meant by the dark side? What does it imply? The lack of images in Protestant churches is also referred to as the “darker side of the Reformation.” Does this imply that the liberal use of imagery and decorations in a church would be the “lighter side?

analyze a scholarly article (chicago manuel style)

You essentially need to analyze a scholarly article (the main article) for the majority of the paper. Briefly identify the main idea/thesis in the introduction and explain if the author effectively conveyed this in the body. Did the evidence (primary and secondary sources) support their argument? If so, give some examples (both primary and secondary references if available). Be sure to analyze (not summarize) the article and its sources they used and explain how well the author supported it.

The other two sources should be used in the conclusion. I do not expect you to use them more than once or twice each in the conclusion. You use these sources to help solidify your analysis of the article. Do these sources reinforce the author’s argument? Do they offer something else the author left out? Focus on the main article and briefly use the other two sources in the conclusion.
