Describe best practices of solid waste management in an urban society.

Instructions: Advanced treatment technologies will be needed in the future to complement the=]traditional landfill and incineration options in use today. The objective of these technologies is to prepare wastes for disposal where combustion is present and to derive energy from municipal wastes with the benefit of reducing the volume that is landfilled after treatment. This extends the life of landfills before they become unavailable to the local community and need to be closed. The fuel value of municipal waste explored in this assignment is critical to the efficient operation of advanced technologies.

1) The particle size of municipal solid waste (MSW) is best described by a distribution of particle sizes. Referring to Figure 4–-12 (pg. 145):

a) List the waste categories that have a larger particle size than the composite curve.

b) List the waste categories that have a smaller particle size than the composite curve.

c) As the blades on the shredder unit begin to wear, will the particle size of the composite curve be shifted towards larger or smaller particles? Explain how you came to your answer.

d) Looking at Table 4–-3 (pg. 148), will Houston, TexasTX, or Wilmington, DelDE., have a coarser particle size distribution? Explain how you came to this determination using best practices in solid waste management. (Your total response for all parts of this question should be at least 200 words.)

2) Properties of MSW (For parts A-C, show all of your work for the problems.)

a) As a consultant, your client hands you literature that they it have has received from two manufacturers of shredder equipment. The bulk density specifications of unit “A” is 29.3 lb/Ft3 ft3 and the bulk density of unit “B” is 435 Kgkg/M3m3. Which unit will deliver a higher bulk density refuse? Show your work.

b) Referring to Fig 4-–1 (p.g, 127), how far above the floor is the bulk density of the stored MSW when it is compressed to 200 Kgkg/M3m3?

c) What is the potential concern of the facility manager if the moisture content of the stored MSW is 60%?

d) Prepare a table that compares two different shredder technologies presented in the textbook. In the table, list the advantages and disadvantages for each technology. When preparing the table, think about how your two chosen shredders have evolved over time to meet the needs of solid waste engineers. Include information about this in your table. (Your total response for Part D of this question should be at least 100 words.)

3) A local municipality is selling landfill capacity to a neighboring communities to generate additional revenue for the community. The following specifications are known about the facility:

The volume of waste that can go into the landfill will be limited to 2.5 million yd3

· The neighboring communities are required to deliver MSW at a density of 750 lb/yd3

a) How much revenue can the landfill generate if they it charges $45/ton for the waste received from the neighboring communities. ? Show all work.

b) If the landfill purchases a compressor capable of delivering 1,350 lb/yd3, how much additional revenue can the landfill generate? Show all work.

d) The landfill is developing criteria for purchasing another compression unit. At what pressure must the compressor operateor to get a bulk density of 1,080 lb/yd3? (For Parts A-D, show all of your work.)

e) What are some of the best practice alternatives that will also generate income to offset landfill operational costs that the municipality might consider if the economics do not support selling landfill capacity to a neighbor that will also generate income to offset landfill operational costs? (Your total response for Part E should be at least 200 words.)

Unit I Journal

We are about to work through Godish, Davis, and Fu’s (2014) textbook related to air quality. As such, we are going to be discussing engineering principles related to how we can engineer air quality as a means of controlling air quality. Consequently, we must first consider what constitutes air pollution. What do you believe qualifies as air pollution? Why?

Unit II Journal

In our first unit, we learned about chemical redox reactions that take place in the environment and that often create outdoor air pollution. In our reading, we were introduced to the term sink.

What is the significance of an atmospheric chemical sink—specifically when studying methods to engineer outdoor air quality? How would you explain this in layman’s terms to a company hiring you to help with the permitting process for a new facility?

Unit II Mini Project

Over the course of the next six units, you will be developing a course project. You will complete a single section of the course project in every unit by completing one section of the course project, and then you will add to it with the subsequent work in the following unit. This unit work will be in the form of unit mini projects.

Our course project will be to develop a document titled “A Permit by Rule (PBR) Evaluation for a Painting Operation” and will serve as a simulation of our work as a contract environmental engineer to an industrial organization planning a painting operation within the United States.

The Scenario:

You have contracted with an industrial organization to engineer and write a state air Permit by Rule (PBR) evaluation for a painting operation facility. According to the local state laws and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) laws, the facility must have an air permit before construction begins. Once the facility is completed, the construction air permit will then become the operational air permit for the facility.

As a result, your client wants the air permit to automatically align the painting operation facility into operational compliance with state and federal air quality laws. Consequently, it is extremely important for you to evaluate the planned painting operation against the PBR requirements in order to meet the air permit criteria, using the state guidance document and considering the equipment and chemicals already planned for the facility operations.

From your first visit with your client, these are your notes and process flow sketch reflecting the intended operational design:

The client has designed an interior coating spray painting system that allows the interior of each unit to be coated. The operations will involve a stripped-down unit being brought into the facility’s shop. The shop is a steel building with a finished concrete floor and a paint booth for each unit. The unit will be placed in the spray booth. The booth will be opened at one end of the booth for makeup air. The exhaust air will flow through an exhaust chamber at the other end of the unit. For each unit, once the liner application operations are completed, the forced curing (drying) operations will immediately commence.

Instructions:

1. Closely read the required reading assignment from the textbook and the unit lesson within the study guide, and consider reading the suggested reading.

Make your Unit II work the first level 1 heading (center, bold) titled “General Considerations for Operation,” and describe the scenario that is presented above, while specifically describing the scenario that you selected (aircraft, tank car, or vehicle). While describing your scenario, you must include the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) implications of the work system while pulling from the textbook as well as any other relevant sources that are presented in the unit lesson in the study guide. In your description of the EHS implications of the system, be sure to discuss the natural and anthropomorphic variables causally related to outdoor air pollution. You are required to describe the scenario in at least 200 words (minimum). Cindy is the plant manager from Gemstone, and she has asked you to perform a sound level survey and noise dosimetry in the fabrication shop, which can get pretty noisy when all three mechanical power presses and the 12-foot shear are running at the same time for several hours a day. She also asked that you identify noise level exposures in the adjacent welding department. Your results indicate that the noise levels in the area are just above the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) permissible exposure level for an average day in the fabrication department.

The welding department is adjacent to the fabrication department, and there is no separating wall. The welding operations are not quite as noisy, although the crackle of a well-adjusted MIG welder can be rather loud when welding mild steel. Noise monitoring and dosimetry of the welders indicated an exposure of just over OSHA’s Action Level of 85 Dba. In addition, you remember taking the survey readings and watching the noise level jump in the welding shop every time the power presses or shear cycled in the fabrication area.

After consulting with fellow industrial hygienists, it was determined that setting up a 12′ X 30′ noise barrier wall between the fabrication area and the welding area and adding noise absorption panels to both sides of the barrier wall and to the white-painted concrete walls in the fabrication department would decrease the sound levels in the welding area to several decibels below OSHA’s Action Level.

Of course, these engineering controls will cost $33,000 dollars. This is compared to a continuing hearing conservation program to include annual audiograms, or hearing tests, annual training, and providing noise protection for the welding department which is estimated to cost $9,000 per year. This amount would be saved each year if the engineering controls are installed.

The statement I would like you to respond to is this: “identify at least one way in which forces of economic and/or political globalization have materialized in your home town/city”*

How does globalization actually appear in people’s lives? Think about where you grew up. Did a factory close down, changing the economic basis of the city. Can you link that to globalization? Did increasing global connectivity enable you to expand your knowledge of the world, or (especially) your feeling of rightfully belonging in it? Are decisions made far beyond the boundaries of your chosen city transforming it? Has the city you lived in been able to take advantage of the forces of globalization, or has it generally been negatively affected by them? Have locally owned stores increasingly been replaced with large corporations? These are just some ways in which you might try to address this question. How have people responded to issues caused by globalization?

There are five points available for this assignment. I therefore anticipate between 3-4 paragraphs in response. Introduce your city, then explore how globalization affects it. If you can think of more than one example, you should mention them. I expect you to use the reading as a springboard for thinking through your own experiences growing up, and how they have been affected by forces of globalization.
