6-1 Discussion The Responsibility to be Historically Informed

September 3, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

Throughout the course, you have examined how historical events impact current events. Historians are often motivated to partly study the past because that knowledge can help us frame, compare, and understand modern problems. However, what responsibilities does an ordinary citizen have to know a particular history (such as different historical perspectives, different historical times, and different geographical regions) or to have the skills to study history effectively?

Discussing challenges that face our world often means investigating opinions and ideas different from your own. Remember to remain thoughtful and respectful towards your peers and instructor in your discussion post and replies.

Create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts.

For your initial post, address the following:

  1. Discuss what responsibilities, if any, citizens should have related to being historically informed. For example, what historical inquiry skills might be important for a citizenry to have to address current global challenges?
  2. Think about a challenge, opportunity, event, or issue that affects your community. How might being more historically informed impact how you understand that issue or how you take action?

History Journal entries

September 3, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

Journal 1: What will you want future historians to know about today?

Everything that has happened up until this moment is part of history. Historians reconstruct the past based on documents and artifacts that are available to them, and what may be available to a given historian may differ depending on a variety of factors.

In this unit, we have been learning about the events and culture of the United States during the Reconstruction Era, roughly 150 years ago.

For this journal entry, imagine what an historian conducting research 150 years from now would want to know about what is happening in the United States today. Write for 15 minutes, or about 250 words, about what you think that historian would want and need to know. Think of your journal entry as a “primary source document” that will be uncovered in 150 years – your journal entry will help that historian understand the United States today.

Journal 2: Contesting the West

During the Gilded Age, Anglo settlers moved into the Great Plains and Mountain West regions in increasing numbers, setting up conflicts with Native American Indians who had lived on the land for many generations.

Imagine you are either a Plains Indian, or an Anglo farmer, in the West. Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, about your experiences. Be sure to write in complete sentences and in your own words.

Journal 3:  Reflecting on Immigration

As you have read in Chapter 17 and watched in the accompanying video lesson, immigration was a major feature and driver of change during the Gilded Age. Immigration is also a major issue today, with some calling for restrictions on immigration, and others calling for immigrants to be welcomed into the United States, even as Texas generally and Dallas specifically have among the highest concentrations of immigrants from around the world.

Reflect on the extent to which our local and national economy and society relies on immigration, and reflect on the extent to which immigrants play a role in your daily life. Write for approximately 15 minutes, or 250 words, about your thoughts on immigrants and immigration in the 21st century.

Journal 4: Module 4 Journal: Ideologies and Empire

You have learned about both domestic racial and gender relations, as well as the beginnings of the United States’ overseas empire at the turn of the 20th Century, from the chapters and video lessons.

In what ways do you think that attitudes about race and gender in the United States, intersect with ideas about the projection of U.S. economic and military power abroad, in the current era? Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, on this subject. Please write in complete sentences and in your own words.

Journal 5: Progressive Reforms Today

As you have read in Chapter 19 and watched in the accompanying video lesson, the Progressive Era was characterized by a series of significant reforms that were advanced at both the state and federal level. Many of these reforms continue with us today.

Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, about a particular Progressive Era reform – of your choice – that continues to shape society today.

Journal 6: Wartime Propaganda

From the chapter and video lesson, you have learned how the Wilson administration used propaganda and censorship to “manufacture the consent” of voters to support the U.S. involvement and effort in World War I.

What examples can you find today, of the U.S. government using similar efforts to build support for its policies, actions, and leaders? Write for 15 minutes, or 250 words, on this topic. Be sure to use specific examples and write in your own words using complete sentences.

Journal 7: The Ku Klux Klan and Right Wing Terrorism

Having learned about the re-birth of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s, what parallels can you find between the Klan, and right-wing terrorist groups in contemporary society? Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, about what similarities and differences that you see between the 1920s KKK, and right-wing terrorist groups today. Be sure to write in complete sentences and in your own words.

Journal 8: The Great Depression and the New Deal

You have learned about the structural causes of the Great Depression, and about how the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations differently responded to the Depression, in chapter 22 and the accompanying video lessons.

Based on what you have learned, reflect on the different responses to the Depression. To what extent should the federal government play a role in providing relief, recovery, and reform, when the private sector fails to meet the needs of the citizens? Write for 15 minutes, or 250 words, on whether and how the federal government should or should not provide relief, recovery, and reform.

Journal 9: Why is it called “The Good War?”

Author Studs Terkel nicknamed World War II, “The Good War,” in his book by the same name. In your opinion, what is it about World War II that causes many Americans to consider it “The Good War?” Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, on why you think this is so. Please write in complete sentences and in your own words.

Journal 10: Are We in a New Cold War?

You have learned about the Cold War conflict between the United States and its liberal democratic allies on one hand, and the Soviet Union and its communist allies on the other hand, with a large part of the world caught in an ambivalent middle and often finding itself the location for numerous “hot” proxy wars and interventions.

Reflect on the current global political and economic situation. Is the United States in a new Cold War with Russia? Or with China? Or both? If so, why? If not, why not? What similarities and differences do you see between the Cold War and the current geopolitical situation? Write for 15 minutes, or 250 words, with your thoughts on these questions.

Journal 11:  The Consumer Society

Chapter 25 refers to the period of 1945 to 1961 as “The Consumer Society.” In what ways are we still a consumer society? In what ways might that be changing? Do we think the present changes might be permanent? Or are we still consumers, but just with different consumption patters? Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, on these questions. Be sure to write in your own words and in complete sentences.

Journal 12: What Civil Rights Work Remains?

In Chapter 26 and the accompanying video lessons, we saw the successes of the Civil Rights Movement lead to the advancement of ongoing reform movements designed to improve the lives of youth, women, Latinx peoples, and American Indians.

Based on what you have learned, what unfinished work remains to secure the blessings of liberty for various groups who live in the United States? What further reforms are needed? Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, to answer these questions.

Journal 13: Living with Less

The title of chapter 27 is “Living with Less.” The 1970s featured both economic problems and political scandals. What parallels do you see in the current era? Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, on the similarities and differences between the 1970s and the current era. Be sure to use your own words and write in complete sentences.

Journal 14: Does Conservatism Remain Triumphant?

Based on your reading of previous chapters and watching previous lessons, one broad theme you should have seen is that, from 1877 to 1932, the Republican Party was the stronger of the two parties, and apart from the Progressive Era, American voters tended to favor a limited role for the federal government. Beginning in 1932, voters began voting for more Democratic candidates and supporting an larger role for the federal government, such as a permanent standing army and national security infrastructure, and economic security programs like those of the New Deal and Great Society. But starting in 1968, with the election of Richard Nixon, continuing with the 1976 election of Jimmy Carter as an outsider, and certainly culminating with the 12 years of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, the United States entered an era in which the federal government was increasingly scrutinized and limited in certain areas, even as it expanded in other areas that aligned with conservative priorities.

Today, our politics seems hopelessly divided between Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals. Are we still in a conservative era? Or are Americans again becoming more liberal/progressive? Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, to answer these questions to the best of your ability.

Journal 15: The Bill Clinton Presidency

As you have read in Chapter 29, Bill Clinton’s presidency stretched across much of the decade. Historians are now only beginning to have the perspective in which to evaluate his presidency within the broader historical context. What are your thoughts on Bill Clinton’s presidency? Write for 15 minutes, or approximately 250 words, on what your thoughts are regarding his presidency and legacy. Make sure to use your own words and write in complete sentences.

Journal 16: What will you want future historians to know about today?

The Module 1 Journal asked you to write about what you would want future historians to know about today. You wrote that journal entry on the basis of what you knew at the beginning of the course, having just completed the reading and video lesson for Module 1.

Having now read chapters 16-30 in the textbook, watched numerous video lessons, and completed other activities, how would you answer that question differently? Based on what you have learned in this course, and reflecting upon your learning, what would you want an historian 150 years from now, to know about life in the United States today?  Think of your journal entry as a “primary source document” that will be uncovered in 150 years.

Discussions that need responed:

Discussion 1:

title:Advantages and disadvantages of becoming ocean bound.

Being ocean bound could be a huge advantage to countries. It was an easier and quicker way for importing and exporting goods. The Chinese used the trade routes to transport most of their goods. It was also a way to find new land and expand territories. The countries that were ocean bound gained the biggest powers. The disadvantages of being ocean bound had less of an impact than the advantages. During importing and exporting, diseases could come from other countries and harm the people. Also, being ocean bound made the country at a higher risk for possible attacks; either through attacking by ships or attacking the ships that were importing and exporting.

Discussion 2:

title:The Bounds of the Ocean

Being ocean bound meant many things for many civilizations. Some saw it as a way to encourage trade, and some saw it as a new way to take over the world. But, on a serious note it did prove to be very advantageous and disadvantageous. In, ” The First Voyage of Vasco de Gama” it explains how with him taking sail he was able to expand the Portuguese market all the way to India, and start trading with the other countries. Vasco opened the eyes of many traders and showed how there is a promising future in international trade.

As I said before some people saw the ocean as a means to control more land, or control more people. In the excerpt “Slave Trader” by William Bosman, Bosman used the ocean to dominate other regions and sell their people as if they were currency. This is the main disadvantage of the human race becoming ocean bound. It allowed slavers to not only collect people from nearby villages or neighboring towns, but travel across the sea to enslave those who they come across.

The respond shoud be 50-100 words each. dont go over 100 words.

HIS-8-2-2 Project 3: Multimedia Presentation Submission

September 3, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

Instructions

Project Icon

  • It’s time to submit your third and last project in the course! After completing your final review of your presentation, upload the complete PowerPoint presentation file, Prezi link, or Microsoft Word document here for instructor feedback.

Overview

“If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.”

Your final longer-term project in this course is to complete a multimedia presentation. The work you did on the Topic Exploration Worksheet in Theme 1 and the historical context and introduction in Theme 3 will directly support your work on this project.

One of the prime benefits of studying history is that it allows us to learn about who we are and where we came from. The people and events of the past can often shed light on the conditions and social norms of the present. Having historical awareness can inform various aspects of your life as well as future aspirations. Learning from past failures and successes can shape ideals and values for years to come.

This final longer-term project is designed to help you understand the fundamental processes and value of studying history. In the first project, you completed the Topic Exploration Worksheet on one of the topics or themes from the library guide. You investigated the types of research you might need to do to learn more about the topic and developed research questions. In Project 2, you used this worksheet to complete a research plan and introduction. You selected one of your research questions and did some secondary-source research, speculated on primary source needs, and used the information to write the introduction and thesis statement for a possible research paper.

In this third project, you will create a multimedia presentation that explores both major developments in historical inquiry and the value of examining history. This assessment addresses the following course outcomes:

  •   Investigate major developments in the progression of historical inquiry for informing critical questions related to historical narrative
  •   Articulate the value of examining historical events for their impact on contemporary issues

Prompt
Now that you have done some research with primary and secondary sources (using sources from the library guide for your chosen topic) and written an introduction for a possible history paper, you will turn your attention to thinking about the creation and value of historical inquiry. You will use the research you have done throughout this course, as well as course materials, to inform your thoughts. To present your opinions and observations, you will create a multimedia presentation (using a presentation tool such as PowerPoint or Prezi) that addresses the following critical elements. While these questions may seem “big,” remember that you are addressing them in a presentation, not a paper, and can use bullet points, visuals, or other methods. These critical elements will be evaluated from the information you provide in your multimedia presentation. Note: If using Prezi, be sure to include a Word document with notes. If using PowerPoint, be sure to use the speaker notes feature.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. Articulate how different historical lenses impact how people perceive an historical event. The lenses include political, economic, and social.

  1. Explain how historical lenses could be applied to your topic. For instance, are there aspects of this event that might interest a political historian
    and what are they?
  2. Choose one of the lenses referenced above, and detail how the historical narrative you started in your research and introduction might change
through this lens. For instance, how might the “story” of your event change when studied through its political aspects?
  3. Discuss what conclusions you can draw about the “telling” of history in relation to the “teller.” How does this impact for you what “history” is?
Be sure to back up your opinions with information learned throughout the course and in reference to your chosen topic. on your conclusions, articulate the value of studying history.

II. Based on your conclusion, articulate the value of studying history.
A. Describe how you could apply to our lives today what you have learned from the event you have studied. Be sure to reference specific

contemporary issues. For instance, what specific issues that we encounter today could benefit from lessons learned from your event?

  1. Discuss your opinion of the adage that “history repeats itself.” Do you agree or disagree? Be sure to explain why you have this opinion with
information you have learned throughout the course and in your research of your topic.

Discuss your obligation as a citizen of your society to understanding the history behind issues that impact you every day. For instance, what civic
duties you can be better at if you know more about their history? How can being a more informed member of society benefit you and society?

Supporting Work and Resources

For support on developing a multimedia presentation, refer to the PowerPoint Training (Windows PC or Mac) or Prezi Training Atomic Learning tutorials. Log in to Atomic Learning using your SNHU email address as your username and your SNHU email password as your password. Be sure to include notes as needed in your presentation in order to meet the outlined critical elements.

Project 3 Rubric
Guidelines for Submission: Your multimedia presentation should be approximately 10 to 12 slides. You are encouraged to include a combination of text, visuals, and sound in order to support your work. Note: If using Prezi, be sure to include a Word document with notes. If using PowerPoint, be sure to include speaker

notes.

History Paper

September 3, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

For part 3 of the Unit 1 Exam, choose ONLY 1 essay question from the list below, which covers part of chapter 16 and all of chapter 17 in the textbook. Grades will be based on the content of the answer and must be more than 300 words in length. Direct quotes do not count toward the required word count.

Part 3 Essay Questions:

1 – Sitting Bull stated, “The life my people want is a life of freedom.” Likewise, Chief Joseph simply asked the government for equal rights enshrined by the laws. Describe what freedom meant to the Indians and how that conflicted with the interests and values of most white Americans. Also, explain why white Americans did not allow Indians the opportunity to have American citizenship.

2 – The West experienced tremendous growth after the Civil War; nowhere was this more apparent than in California. Write an essay on the consequences of population growth on the western landscape, looking at farming, livelihoods, the impact of the railroad, the growth of Indian reservations, and the subjugation of Indian peoples.

3 – What might account for the emergence of a mythic “Wild” West during the Gilded Age? Given the rapid post–Civil War expansion of industry beyond the Mississippi River, why would perceptions of a West, at once a lawless but timeless romantic frontier dominated by cowboys and Indians, permeate American popular culture in the late nineteenth century? (In composing your answer, consider the impact of the second industrial revolution.)

4 – Explain why Americans increasingly came to feel that they were being denied economic independence and democratic self-government during the late nineteenth century.

5 – How did the Populists seek to rethink the relationship between freedom and government to address the crisis of the 1890s? Why was their platform considered radical? How did their platform seek to guarantee freedom?

6 – Chronicle the process that developed in the South of chipping away the freedoms granted to blacks during Reconstruction. Give careful consideration to how the Civil War was remembered by white America. By 1900, what conditions did African-Americans in the South face? How did they respond to these conditions?

7 – Analyze the consequences of American rule in Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. Did the citizens prosper? Enjoy freedom? Accept American rule? Comment on the consequences for the United States with regard to the statement made by Eric Foner in the text: “Thus, two principles central to American freedom since the War of Independence—no taxation without representation and government based on the consent of the governed—were abandoned when it came to the nation’s new possessions.”

8 – Explain the controversy that the war in the Philippines and the annexation of the Philippines triggered over the relationship between political democracy, race, and American citizenship.

9 – Discuss some of the freedoms and restrictions experienced by American women after 1880. How did some women’s lives seem to change for the better, while others’ did not? How would you explain the disparity of their situations? Support your answer with specific examples from the text.

10 – Discuss the many obstacles faced by Chinese immigrants to the United States in the late nineteenth century. Among the immigrant groups arriving in the United States in the late nineteenth century, how were arrivals from China singled out for particular discrimination by Americans? Why do you think the Chinese received such unique treatment?
