In this activity, you will make your final topic selection and write a research question that is clear, relevant, and focused. Your research question will evolve as you progress through the course, so what you write now is not final. You will then attempt to look at your historical topic from a different person’s perspective. Use the provided HIS 100 Module Two Activity Research Question Template Word Document to complete this assignment.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

• Write a clear, relevant, and focused research question about the topic you have selected.
  • Refer to the module overview and resources for helpful information about writing effective research questions.
• Explain how another person’s beliefs, assumptions, and values may lead that person to create a different question than you.

Guidelines for Submission

Use the provided Module Two Activity Template: Historical Research Question to address the steps above. While references are not required, any sources used should be cited according to APA style if you reference them in your responses. Consult the Shapiro Library APA Style Guide for more information on citations.

Analysis: After the reading the headnote, the first thing I am going to do is read the source note [read source information.] As I source this document, I notice the date. In February 1959 Castro had just come to power and was probably working to establish his rule. Eisenhower had recognized the new Cuban government, and Castro was traveling to the U.S. a few months later, in April. Neither side had taken a firm stance toward the other—the relationship was very new. Furthermore, I notice that this interview was done with U.S. newspaper editors. That makes me wonder if he is trying to get some “good press” in the United States. Now that I’ve thought about the context in which this interview was given, as I read the interview I’ll want to think about how this context might have affected what Castro said about the U.S. This process is called contextualization.
Is this a credible document to help us determine how Fidel Castro viewed the United States? Given what I know so far, it may be, but because it happened so early in Castro’s presidency, it might not give us a really good sense of Castro’s true beliefs because he’s still working to establish his power, and he may be engaged in a public relations campaign here. He’s not sure how the U.S. is going to treat Cuba, and he might want to establish a good relationship with a powerful neighbor. As you read the interview, think about how the context in which the interview was given might have influenced what Castro said.

 This paper asks you to read the assigned segments of Peter A. Morton’s The Trial of Tempel Anneke: Records of a Witchcraft Trial in Brunswick, Germany, 1663. This is a transcript of a witchcraft trial and you must take these transcripts (primary documents) and use them to answer ONE of the following three questions in a thoughtful essay. Be sure to use examples from the book and have an argument.

• 1. What does this trial show about attitudes towards witchcraft in Early Modern Europe?
• 2. What does this trial reveal about everyday life in 1663?

• 3. You tell the story – using footnotes to show your evidence – of what happened. From whose viewpoint would you tell it? What would you highlight? You must include a paragraph explaining how your choices highlight the historical points you are trying to make.
