Have women really fallen deeply to society’s image of beauty? 15 years ago, significant number of women started facing issues that greatly affected their mental and physical well-being.

Description

Have women really fallen deeply to society’s image of beauty? 15 years ago, significant number of women started facing issues that greatly affected their mental and physical well-being. The essay “The Slender Trap” by Trina Piscatelli in 2004 highlighted the effects of anorexia nervosa to the body and how a person ends up with the disorder. Society had pushed women to become so concerned about their weight that resorted to unhealthy eating patterns. Young women were found to have the desire to please people around her and craved for positive remarks that they end up depriving themselves of food. This may not be the case anymore today. The article is unsubstantial at present as women have become empowered and media now uses their strength to further positive body image making the author’s main points irrelevant and inaccurate.

Back in the year 2004 at the time of the author’s writing, there was an alarming number of cases of young women belonging to middle and upper class families in westernized countries who practice starvation as means to gain control of their weight to feel good about themselves (Allen, Byrne, Oddy, & Crosby, 2013, p. 118). Back then, thin physique was associated with success, beauty and happiness. The author talked about eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa and how it is affecting young women as influenced by mental challenges in the adolescent stage, pressures coming from family and friends and a probable effect of the media portraying unrealistic body images (Dynes, Norton, & Green, 2019, p. 129). The author expresses that in order to reduce the likelihood of having inferior-feeling and unhealthy women today and in the future, we must promote healthy lifestyle and positive body image by engaging in campaigns that take women out from self-inflicted physical harm just to obtain a slim physique.

The author’s argument is not as relevant as it was back in the day. In 2004, media had widespread misuse of their power in promoting unrealistic and unattainable body models which made women feel so distraught about themselves. A lot of women were vulnerable enough to give in to what media and society tells them to be like thus manifesting harmful physical symptoms. Media, in today’s age confer acceptance of all body types, thick or thin. The media has now become a significant tool to spread about body positivity campaigns and used the hashtag #positivebodyimage in social media to raise awareness, promote healthy eating and exercise habits and feature diverse body types with uplifting messages (Wegenstein & Hansen, 2006). Young women who may have potential or have had unstable mentality are now able to stand up and be heard; they are getting all the support they need.

I always knew I wanted to do something that involves helping others because I am a caring person. Growing up I had a couple of Medical Assistants and RN’s in my family.

Description

My Top 3 Career Choices

I always knew I wanted to do something that involves helping others because I am a caring person. Growing up I had a couple of Medical Assistants and RN’s in my family. That was motivation to me. As I grew older and along the years my career choice also changed. I still knew I wanted to be in the health care field that never changed. I just became uncertain about what I wanted to pursue a career in.

Growing up whenever I was asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” My answer was always “I’m going to be a nurse.” A nurse is a licensed professional that provides health care to individuals. Nursing duties include checking vital signs, administering medication, physical exams and providing patients with health information. Nurses are employed in clinics, hospitals, schools, home health care, offices. By the next decade, the career growth is projected to increase by 16%. Degrees for nursing includes (BSN) Bachelor of science in nursing degree usually takes 4 years to complete. (ABSN) Accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing usually takes 12-18 months to complete. Associate degree usually takes about 2 years to complete.

It was not until after high school when I decided to pursue a degree in Dental Hygiene. Although that is a major goal, I still have set for myself the timing is not right. Dental Hygiene program is an associate degree which takes about 3 years to complete. Dental hygienist are healthcare professionals that work independently alongside dentists to provide oral care. There are specialized in training to prevent and provide treatment for oral diseases. Dental hygiene roles include periodontal debridement, prophylaxis, applying dental sealants. Dental hygienists’ employment is projected to grow 6% from 2019-2029.

Dental Assistant was the next step for me. I had to ask myself why to pursue a degree in something else when your main goal is to be a Dental hygienist? My plain is to work my way up in the dental field. A dental assistant supports a dentist in providing more dental treatment. Their roles and training differ them from dental hygienists. Dental assistant roles are passing instruments, preparing patients for treatment, and taking x rays. Dental assisting programs can take between 9 months to 2 years to complete and that depends if it is a certificate, diploma, or degree program. Employment is projected to grow 7% from 2019-2029.

In conclusion I will be applying to the dental program. I am ready to learn the skills and training for dental assisting. I feel though my decision to apply for school again was the best and perfect timing. Although my other 2 career choices are great as well, I know this one is a better fit for me. My goal is to perform well in the work environment and succeed my roles as a dental assistant.

Leo and his housemate receive support from a provider during the day but not in the evenings and at night. Recently Leo has been frequenting a local pub where he has made friends with a group of men. He has become involved in their business and delivers packages for them during the day for which he receives a small amount of money. Leo does not know what these packages contain but believes they are washing machine spares. Leo’s support staff have spoken to him about these activities and have told him that he must stop. They have tried to ban him from going to the pub. Leo says that the men from the pub are his friends and he can do what he likes.

2. Mrs B has been admitted to hospital following a fall at home. She is 85 years old and lives on her own. Up until this point, she has managed independently with some support from her daughter (who lives 50 miles away) and her neighbours. The fall has resulted in a marked reduction in Mrs B’s mobility and currently she is unable to weight bear, requiring full support with her personal care needs. At times she is also getting confused. Mrs B has been assessed by a physiotherapist who feel that the best option would be for her to move into a nursing home. Mrs B’s daughter supports this recommendation as she feels that she would not be able to offer her mother the support she needs if she returned home. However, at this stage Mrs B has not been assessed by a social care worker and there is the potential for her needs to be met at home with a package of care. Mrs B has stated that she does not want to go into a nursing home.

3. Susan is a female aged 45 who lives in her own rented accommodation. She has a support worker who visits a few times a week. Susan has a moderate learning disability, she has good practical skills that enable a high level independence. Susan has a wide range of coping strategies developed over the years and is able to communicate verbally. Susan has been married twice (widowed and divorced). She has one child who is in permanent care with no contact. Susan grew up within a dysfunctional family. Historic concerns of grooming and sexual abuse from older males within the family have led to an acceptance by Susan of unwanted sexual relationships and tolerance of violence. Susan has family living locally but were unable to be considered a protective factor. Susan has recently disclosed to her support worker that she has been sending pictures of herself to strangers online.
