I chose this neighbourhood because it is where I grew up. I completed kindergarten, elementary school, and high-school in this neighborhood. Ultimately, I chose it because I have a deep rooted attachment as it feels like home. I want to showcase the remarkable features of this neighborhood and I believe I have an advantage since I am already well informed about it. Although I am aware of Bloor West Village’s best coffee shops, I believe there are many historical aspects that I need to be exposed to.

2. Runnymede Church: This church is a staple for residents in the Bloor West Village as it has built a close knit community.

 

3. Runnymede Public School: For the majority of families in this neighborhood, the children attend Runnymede Public School. It has been renovated to add more classes and space for children since many families are trying to get their children on the waitlist to attend this school.

1. Chapter at Runnymede and Bloor that was previously a theatre, has now been turned into a Shoppers Drug Mart. Residents of Bloor West Village were upset with the owners of the building because this building is a historic part of the neighborhood.

2. Runnymede United Church is over 70 year old and a lot of its history relies in the community. They offer camps for children, events, Sunday mass and a beautiful church the community to connect in. It history is seen inside as it has been barely renovated.

3. Runnymede Public School is one of the oldest, most well-known schools in this neighborhood. It is more than 100 years old and has a legacy of families who have attended it. It has several plaques and acknowledgements of donations all around the school.

 

 

13. What are some indicators of the economic wellbeing of the area? (Be creative: how would you describe the area to someone else? Is it wealthy? Is it poor? Why would you say this?).

 

Bloor West Village has developed into a neighborhood for the upper middle class. People choose to live here because they want to start a family and put their children in safe, well known schools. Runnymede and Bloor is filled with expensive clothing stores, cafés and restaurants which I believe tailors to its target market. I grew up in this neighborhood and my family was in a financial state where I was able to maximize my opportunities. I was surrounded by very wealthy families, where they would purchase million dollar homes. We have recently put our home on the market for 2 million dollars and have seeked out multiple bidders who have offered more than its asking price. I have witnessed the types of people who live in this neighborhood and who are moving to it.

 

14. What ethno cultural amenities can you see in the area? Name at least 3 restaurants, shops, churches, temples, mosques, synagogues, cultural halls, or other features that cater to a particular ethnic-cultural group and what that group is.

 

1. This community is Ukrainian based. Every year, the Ukrainian festival takes over the Bloor West Village where different Ukrainian restaurants sell their products.

2. Baka Gallery Café has been a staple in this neighborhood situated at Runnymede and Beresford Ave. The owners are Ukrainian and have been selling organic Ukrainian based dishes.

3. Baby Point Lounge is a lounge and restaurants situated on Jane St and Bloor St West. They have the best pierogis in this neighborhood and are well known by locals.

 

15. What arts and cultural amenities can you see in the area? Name at least 3 resources that foster the production or consumption of the arts (theatres, halls, dance, fashion, arts classes, music).

 

1. Bloor West Music Studios has some of the best musical classes in this neighborhood. They offer private and public classes for all age groups. They sell musical instruments as well.

2. Humber Cinemas recently closed down, however it has been an important staple of this community for the past 20 years. It has hosted many events and film releases for the community to join together and experiences.

3. Annette Street Music is another great musical centre for individuals seeking music lesson. They offer summer camps and private lessons all year round.

 

16. What public transportation amenities can you see in the neighbourhood? What bus or streetcar routes run through the neighbourhood? Is there a subway line? Are there GO train stops? Does there seem to be good access to public transportation?

 

Runnymede station is at the centre of Bloor West Village. They have bus 77,79, and 71 that go north and south of Bloor St W. Commuters are able to easily take the TTC as the busses come every 2-5 minutes.

 

17. What are the resources for pedestrians or wheelchair users in the neighbourhood? Are there sidewalks? Are there curb-cuts? Are there shortcuts and paved paths? Are there recreational paths?

 

Since this neighborhood has a suburban feel, there are many alleyways behind every street. As I live on Runnymede, I am able to cut through streets very easily by taking the alleyways. Along Runnymede and Bloor Street W, there are full sidewalks which are safe for pedestrians to walk on. Regarding wheelchair use, the streets are well maintained meaning that it is very accessibly for these users. Each curb has a cut on every street to accommodate for wheelchair users and strollers as there are a lot of families in this neighborhood.

 

18. Are there adequate amenities for cyclists? Bike lanes? Sharrows? Pass throughs or slower traffic streets?

 

There are bike lanes all the way down Runnymede, however there are none along Bloor St W. Since Bloor St W is a pedestrian filled street, people choose to bike on the roads at their own risk. The street is not that wide so it would be difficult to put in a bike lane on both sides of the road. There are sharrows along Runnymede Road to indicated to vehicles to stay in there lane as there may be a biker passing by. Since Runnymede Road has a primary, junior and senior public school, it is important that the speed limit is under 50km/h along these roads to accommodate for families. Bloor Street West has a speed limit of 50km/h which is relatively slower to other busy streets around Toronto. It is due to the amount of families and children in this neighborhood.

 

19. Are there any amenities particularly for senior citizens or children? List them here

 

1. Chartwell Grenadier Retirement Residence: This residence is for senior citizens and offers great programs for students to volunteer and interact with the seniors. As a child, I use to volunteer here with my family members.

2. MakerKids Bloor West Village: This IT program allows children to develop their STEM skills. It offers after school programs that children can easily walk to if their parents cannot pick them up from school.

3. Angelgate Day Care: This day care provides a full service to families where they can drop their children from 8am-7pm if they have to work full time. This day care takes the children on excursions and offers them daily meals.

Expand the GROUNDWATER folder. Double‑click and select Gray County, Kansas.

This is Gray County, Kansas. As you can tell from the center pivot irrigation circles, agriculture is the dominant land use in the county. The Arkansas River – running west to east – bisects the county. There is not enough water in the river to provide sufficient water for irrigation. Therefore, water source for irrigation is groundwater.

We cannot see the aquifer that is supplying the water for irrigation, but we do have well information that indicates the depth of the water table. In general, we assume the deeper the water table, the deeper the well.

Double‑click and select Well Depths.

This map shows the depth of the water table. It was created using data from 100 wells. The more yellow the area, the shallower the well and the more blue, the deeper. The deepest wells have a depth of approximately 500 feet.

Double‑click and select, Surface Profile. Right‑click Surface Profile, and then select Show Elevation Profile.

This surface profile line is approximately 25 miles in length and the elevation varies by 24 meters only. This is not much change in elevation over 25 miles.

With the elevation profile showing at the bottom of the screen, run your cursor along the x-axis. Look at the position of the red arrow, relative to the well depth map.

Assignment Description & General Instructions:

 

The things left behind or thrown away can hold more information about the people doing the discarding then their cities and monuments.  While archaeologists of the early 20th century sought the tombs of kings, modern archaeologists place a greater focus on the homes and middens of the most common socioeconomic classes.  The trash of the common member of the culture is far more instructive than the tombs or houses of the economic elite.

 

For this assignment I want you to record everything your throw away for one week.   If you live in the dorms gather data on your roommate’s garbage as well.  If you are part of a household or live off campus record what is thrown away at your residence.  It is not necessary to take out your trash and go through it, but if you eyeball it and discuss with other people in your residence what they have discarded you should be able to obtain the needed information.  Then tell me, in an essay of at least 300 words, what you think your refuse says about you and possible those that you live with.

 

The interpretation is the tricky part and I often advise students to imagine the garbage belonging to someone else, perhaps a neighbor.  Then ask yourself some questions about the garbage and what it tells you.  It might also help to break up the information into three categories.  What does the garbage tell you about…

 

  • The culture in general.
  • Your specific domestic unit.
  • What doesn’t the garbage tell you?

 

Here a series of more detailed questions to help you:

 

  • What does the refuse tell you about the household?
  • Can you gauge the socioeconomic class of the household?
  • Can you tell how many individuals were part of the household or if the refuse was even from a single household?
  • What is the political or economic system of the culture?

 

Put careful thought into your analysis.  I will be expecting you to be able to describe how the items of refuse provides the information you present as well as painting an image of the culture that created the refuse.  You should be careful not to overstate your data or give in to cultural bias or “assumed” knowledge.  Everything you say about your culture should be tied to specific items in your garbage.

 

Please include your list of things that were thrown away; though it does not count toward the minimum length requirement, it is necessary for me in order to grade your assignment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Grading Rubric:

 

Analysis – 50%

 

  • 25 points:  The individual domestic unit and cultural as a whole are discussed using concrete examples from the list of garbage.  In addition the student offers information on what the refuse would not tell an investigator.
  • 15 points:  The student discuses both the domestic unit and the larger culture using concrete examples from the list of garbage.
  • 10 points:  The individual domestic unit and cultural as a whole are discussed is low detail.  Some specific items from the list of garbage are mentioned.
  • 5 points:  Only one context is mentioned in the essay.  Few items from the list of refuse are mentioned.

 

Essay Quality – 40%

 

Format:  The assignment is written in essay format.

 

Grammar & Spelling:  The essay is clearly written and thus easy to read and comprehend and the words are all correctly spelled.  This is often the portion where students loose the most points.  I will be subtracting points for each misspelled word and grammatical error.

ROCK TYPES

As noted in the Introduction, all rocks can be classified as one of three basic rock types: igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic.

Igneous rocks

Igneous rocks are further divided into extrusive igneous rock and intrusive igneous rock.

 Extrusive igneous rock is formed (cooled) on the Earth’s surface.

 Intrusive igneous rock is formed (cooled) in the Earth. Unless there has been significant erosion of surface material, intrusive igneous rock are not easily detectable on the surface (Figure 1).

Some intrusive igneous formations include:

o Dikes – vertical intrusive rock that formed from cooled magma within fissures that cut across older rock. Dikes frequently differ in composition to the surrounding bedrock.

o Sills – intrusive rocks formed in horizontal fissures. Sills are often situated between older layers of sedimentary rock.

o Batholith – a large pluton, or mass of rock that cooled and solidified deep within the Earth. Some batholiths are several hundred miles long.

The dark areas are a lava flow from the Krafla volcano in Northern Iceland. The lava cooled formed basalt and rhyolite, which are extrusive igneous rocks.

Sedimentary rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed by the deposition of sediments (usually in a marine environment) that under pressure slowly turn into rock. Lithification (cementing of sediment into rock) is an important process in the formation of this type of rock.

There are three board types of sedimentary rock: organic, clastic, and chemical precipitation.

 Organic sedimentary rocks are formed from the deposition of carbon based material. Subjected to pressure, this material, over time, can form coal.

 Clastic sedimentary rocks are sedimentary rocks composed of clasts or pieces of weathered and eroded rocks. They are classified by grain size and range from fine grained claystone (Figure 2) to coarse grained conglomerate (Figure 3).

 Chemically precipitated sedimentary rocks are formed through the precipitation of calcium carbonate which is then deposited on the ocean floor. Over time, enough pressure can built such that lithification occurs creating this type of sedimentary rock. Limestone is a common example of a chemical precipitated sedimentary rock.

Sedimentary rocks – West Virginia

This is a coal mine in West Virginia, where mountain top removal is a common way of mining this sedimentary rock. Coal is an economically important sedimentary rock worldwide as nearly 40 percent of the electricity generated comes from coal power plants (Worldcoal, 2006).

Sedimentary rocks – Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a showcase of clastic sedimentary rock. Erosion by the Colorado River, coupled with tectonic uplift, has exposed layers of different types of largely sedimentary rock dating back nearly 2 billion years to the Proterozoic period in the late Precambrian Era.

Sedimentary rocks – Rocky Mountains

The Rocky Mountains in Canada are comprised primarily of limestone and shale, suggesting at one time this area was once covered by an ocean. Scientists estimate this limestone was created during the Paleozoic Era (350 million years ago), and that uplift to create the mountains began during the last half of the Mesozoic Era (180 million years ago) (Gadd, 2008).

Metamorphic rocks

Metamorphic rocks are formed from igneous or sedimentary rocks that have been subjected to heat and pressure; in other words, the heat and pressure results in the rearrangement or recrystallization of minerals to form different minerals.

Metamorphic rocks formed from igneous rocks are sometimes called meta-igneous. Likewise, meta-sedimentary rocks are metamorphic rocks formed from sedimentary rocks.

Common metamorphic rocks include marble (from limestone) and gneiss (usually from granite).

Metamorphic rocks are divided into two broad categories, foliated and non-foliated:

 Foliated metamorphic rocks (Figure 3) exhibit banding as the minerals present align to form bands.

 Non-foliated rocks (Figure 4) lack this banding.

Metamorphoses can occur in two ways, namely contact metamorphism and regional metamorphism. The former happens over a small area and entails magma coming in direct contact with rock. The heat from the magma alters the crystal structure of the rock. The latter occurs over a much larger area and entails high heat and great pressure altering rock.

Metamorphic rocks – Carrara, Italy

The white areas are marble quarries near Carrara, Italy, not far from Pisa. The area is well known for Carrara marble which is found in the surrounding mountains. This marble is used for statues and buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome.

Background on ENSO

El Niño (EN) is characterized by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific, as opposed to La Niña, which characterized by unusually cold ocean temperatures in the Equatorial Pacific. El Niño is an oscillation of the ocean-atmosphere system in the tropical Pacific having important consequences for weather around the globe. These phenomena are often analyzed in conjunction with the Southern Oscillation (SO), a comparison of atmospheric pressures in the southwestern Pacific Ocean to those in the southeastern Pacific Ocean.

ENSO news reports often focus on the phenomenon’s impact on South American weather, wildlife, and commerce. While it is important to remember that El Niño brings Peru rain, mudslides, and poor fishing (while La Niña produces the opposite), scientific research suggests broader meteorological impacts. What impacts the atmosphere, ultimately affects the biosphere.

The figures below show “winter” snowfall values for the contiguous United States for the years 1948–2006.

The top map shows mean snowfall amounts based on the 38 “neutral years” (i.e., neither El Niño nor La Niña years).
