While technological progress is generally considered a beneficial  necessity, historically it has not always been met with open minds.  Throughout history, technological change has often meant that  traditional societal roles and means of existence are often completely  transformed and/or eliminated altogether. Such was the case of the  Luddites of the early 19th century who took to rebellion in an effort to  maintain their way of life. Their motivations can be seen among similar  groups today as modern technology attempts to simplify and automate our  way of life. In this activity you will explore the existing and  potential negative effects of technological change and how it has and  will shape current society.

After reading a brief history on Luddism and Its DiscontentsPreview the document and performing a brief internet search, answer the following:

  • Briefly discuss the origin and motivations of the Luddites of the early 19th century.
  • Do you think the Luddites were successful in their endeavors?  What  could they have done to better influence the role this technology would  have in their lives?

Hello class!

Program planners find difficulties in promoting the idea of personal responsibility with regard to health behavior because planning involves finding the solutions to the problems that exist in the environment and how to approach the people affected so that they can learn more. The learning or education part is a challenge since the people affected may not be in the best position to make sound health related choices due to their state of leaving. A perfect example is how to eradicate the issues of malnutrition in the community. In such conditions, the health program planners may find challenges to educate the poor communities on how to have a balanced diet while they are not in a position to afford a single meal. Besides that, providing education on how to eradicate some diseases in the community is a challenge to the program planners because some of the diseases and disabilities are because of genetic and environmental factors and may not make any sense to the community or target population

The other challenge experienced by the program planners is the constant changes in the environment settings, which may block some of the programs. For examples, when the resources allocated to a certain program are not released on the arranged time, the education program may not be conducted at the required time since the resources required may be inadequate. Moreover, changing the perception and desires of the people rooted in their culture is a challenge since the people may not find a way of substituting the education provided on health and their culture or lifestyle (Resnik, 2007). Moreover, the program planners address problems that are beyond the ability of the people to deal with. Controlling and managing environmental health cannot be achieved by the individuals but by the government.

It is possible to promote the idea of personal responsibility with regard to health behavior while trying to avoid placing blame on individuals for their health status because the program planners can promote the health status by providing education on sanitation (Society for Public Health Education, 2017). The health planners can also focus on disease surveillance, controlling of pollution, occupation health, and urban planning so that the risks exposed to the environment can be minimized.

Chung Ming is a teenager,14 years old,and he
is ethnic Chinese. His parents immigrated
from China when Ming was roughly 9 years
old. Ming’s parents have not yet mastered the
English language and in some cases, he has
had to translate for his family. Lately, Ming
has been skipping school and he has been
hanging out with a group of other Asian
(mostly Chinese) youth that have established
a small gang.
Ming’s parents are humiliated by his
behavior and do not act as if they are really ready
to conduct counseling. They express that they
are very troubled by Ming’s behavior and even
that he brings dishonor on his family. Ming, on
the other hand, is much more Westernized than
his parents and he notes that many of his friends
have forsaken much of their Chinese views
for those more consistent with mainstream
American society.
Ming seems indifferent as you watch him
while his parents talk, noting that Ming stays
out late,drinks at age 14,and he has even stolen small items from various stores in the neigh-
borhood.You can tell by observing that Ming’s
father has difficulty with English and is a bit
withdrawn. The mother is also withdrawn and
does not offer anything to the conversation
throughout most of the session.
Ming is on juvenile probation and he
seems to meet the requirements of his supervi-
sion. The mere fact that he is on probation is
problematic with his parents and is also a
source of shame for all members of the family.
After the session, you are fairly sure that
Ming is still engaged in illegal activities with his
prior gang. You make it a point to ultimately
contact his probation/parole officer during the
next week.
Given the dynamics of this traditionally
Chinese family, Ming’s advanced acculturation
in Western culture, and the lack of concern

  • Provide an equation used for computing water flow rate from pipe diameter. Describe the application and variables in the equation.
  • Explain two methods for treating water.
  • Explain two features of a solid waste landfill.
  • Describe two hazardous waste onsite remediation technologies.
  • Explain the purpose of an electrostatic precipitator and the air pollutants that it removes, and show an equation used to determine its efficiency.
  • Provide the equation used to compute SPL (in dB) from sound pressure in µbars. If a bulldozer emits a sound level of 90 dBA, what is the sound level (dBA) of two bulldozers next to each other?
  • Discuss your favorite part of the course.
