Holistic Communication: A caring, healing process that calls forth the full use of

self in interacting with another. It incorporates the constructs and processes of therapeutic communication within a framework that acknowledges the infinite, spiritual, and energetic nature of Being, the centrality of being heart-centered, and the importance of intention, self-knowledge, transcendent presence, and intuition in our interactions. (Dossey & Keegan, 2016)

Therapeutic Communication: A goal-directed form of communication used to achieve goals that promote client health and well-being. Empathy, unconditional regard, genuineness, respect, concern, caring, and compassion are conveyed through active listening, active observing, focusing, restating, reflecting, and interpreting. Let us assume that you are a school nurse in a high school. At a recent school athletic event, a spectator suffered a cardiac arrest in the stands. A coach of the home team went into the high school to fetch the automatic emergency defibrillator (AED) only to find out that it was not readily available. In the meantime, an emergency squad arrived and resuscitated the spectator. On Monday morning, you learn of the absence of the AED only to find out that it had been locked in the custodian’s closet. Reflect on the following questions outlined in the “Political Analysis and Strategies” chapter:

  • What is the issue?
  • Is it my issue, and can I solve it?
  • Is this the real issue or merely a symptom of a larger one?
  • Does it need an immediate solution, or can it wait?
  • Is it likely to go away by itself?

Developing any part of a research study has it challenges. For a novice researcher, they may find it to be a little extra difficult due to their lack of experience. However, this should not stop a novice researcher from engaging in research studies. If a novice researcher is asked to develop a new tool to collect patient data, the novice researcher must first perform a literature review and establish a framework (Brannan, Dumsha & Yens, 2013). Once these are done, then creating the method for the study including the tool to collect data is next. The researcher should keep the design of the study simple and standardized but detailed enough that other researchers would be able to duplicate the study exactly (Brannan et al, 2013).

Because anxiety is a feeling that can only be self-reported, collecting data in a narrative or qualitative format would be ideal. Loop diuretics work by inhibiting sodium and chloride reabsorption in the nephron’s loop of Henle to produce sigifnicant diuresis and subsequent fluid volume reduction. Furosemide can be prescribed for many indications, including edema, heart failure, cirrhosis, kidney disease, pulmonary edema, and hypertension in limited circumstances (for example, if clients do not have adequate renal function and require fluid volume reduction and are hypertensive or clients who have heart failure and hypertension). Due to its mechanism of action, it can result in side effects like electrolyte imbalanaces and hypovolemia, requiring close monitoring of electrolyte levels and renal function. Loop diuretics are covered later in the lesson when heart failure medications are covered, as that is their primary indication.
