history 200 week 2 writing plan

September 12, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

Overview: Throughout Theme: Approaches to History, you have been guided through beginning your Project 1: Writing Plan assignment, which you will continue to work on in Theme 2 and formally submit for completion at the end of Week 4 of the course. This progress check assignment provides you with an important opportunity to get valuable instructor feedback on the progress you are making and to ensure you are on the right track for your later submission. Prompt: The second half of Theme: Approaches to History has explored how historians select search terms to locate secondary sources that help them find answers to their research question. Return to your submission for Progress Check 1 and expand upon your event’s historical significance, describe two secondary sources you could use to research your event (along with search terms you used to locate those sources), and support your research question with secondary and primary sources. Specifically, in this assignment, you will submit the following elements of your Project 1: Writing Plan for review by your instructor: In Theme: Approaches to History, learning block 2-3 (page 3), you completed the following element: I. Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant? In Theme: Approaches to History, learning block 2-3 (page 3), you worked toward the following element: II. Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. Your sources must be relevant to your event and must be of an appropriate academic nature. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your event? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices? In Theme: Approaches to History, learning block 2-3 (page 3), you completed the following element: IV. Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related to the historical event you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about? Please note that the numbering included above directly aligns with the numbering of these elements as they are presented in the Project 1 Guidelines and Rubric. You will ultimately also need to describe primary sources that you could use to research your event as well as the audience and message for your historical analysis essay, but you do not need to do so in this submission

ART HISTORY ESSAY

September 12, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

ARTH 204: Introduction to Modern Art and Visual Culture, 1860-1945

Essay Guidelines:

• Stapled, hard copies required. No late exams.

• You must properly cite all sources using the Chicago Manual of Style. Limit your citations to the assigned course Readings or other academic resources.

• Woodbury University policy clearly states that plagiarism is strictly prohibited.

Turn in your assignment on March 18, 2019 in lecture. Essays should be between 1,200 and 1,400 words. Please choose one of the following questions to answer.

You are encouraged to include images in your essay. Whenever you describe a work of art at any length, as you begin, ideally your reader should be able to see a reproduction of it (you choose the size) on the same page as your description (do this just once; no need to reiterate). Place a caption (in 12-point font) below the image stating the artist’s surname (only), the title of the work (in italics), and its date.

Paul Gauguin, The Vision after the Sermon, 1888

In general, your writing should follow these three principles:

(i) Place each work firmly within its social and historical context.

(ii) Drawing on your own observations, describe the way each image is constructed.

(iii) Relate your discussion to the relevant Readings and/or Lecture presentations. When you refer to a particular Reading, in a footnote write out the author’s name, the title of their chapter or article, and publication details (see the bottom of this page) – and to indicate your familiarity with the text, in the same footnote briefly summarize their argument.[footnoteRef:1] [1: See Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, Extremities: Painting Empire in Post-Revolutionary France (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2002), 108. Grigsby’s account emphasizes the prevalnece of homophobia among the troops occupying Egypt.]

Essay Questions

2.

The late nineteenth century was a time of rapid transformation for Western Europe. Urbanization swelled cities like Paris or Berlin into booming metropolises while the countryside became an almost mythical retreat for Nature, or what people imagined Nature to be. In the cities, technological progress improved people’s lives while often alienating them from their work or from each other.

Analyze the reaction to ‘modern’ life as seen in two different painters of the period. Look at how their work reflects upon those developments while paying close attention to their style and how it may serve to embrace, reject, problematize or glorify modernity and its features. Contrast each painter’s reaction and use this juxtaposition as a springboard for a discussion of the larger context of society and politics at the time, as well as their own biography.

Please choose your own way to discuss the issue of critical negation in relation to the formation of modern art. Develop your own argument, providing a thorough visual analysis of three to five artworks. Engage critically with relevant course themes, and engage in some detail with at least three of the course Readings.

Midterm Paper Formatting Guidelines – Chicago Manual of Style

1. Heading: The heading goes in the upper right corner of the first page of your exam and should look like this:

Your Name

ARTH 204 – Midterm Exam

Spring 2019

Date

2. Formatting:

12-point font for the main text, footnotes and illustration captions

Times New Roman

1” page margins

Insert page number at the top right corner of each page

Heading is single-spaced, the entire body is DOUBLE SPACED

3.  When you cite a book or article in your essay…

You must always specify your exact source by means of a footnote placed at the bottom of the page. The footnote should be formatted like the example below & at the bottom of this page.

Example: Part of the difficulty in representing Mameluke figures in painting was that Mameluke society was ethnically so diverse. As Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby has pointed out, “Mamelukes came from throughout Eurasia and Africa and spoke many languages, among them, Arabic, Armenian, Greek, Turkish, Flemish, Italian, German, and French.”[footnoteRef:2] [2: Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, Extremities: Painting Empire in Post-Revolutionary France (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2002), 108.]

Footnote (at the bottom of the page, 12-pt font):

Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, Extremities: Painting Empire in Post-Revolutionary France (New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2002), 108.

4. When you cite a work of art in your essay….

You must always specify exactly which work you are referring to by means of a footnote placed at the bottom of the page. In art history, referencing particular works of art normally includes the artist’s full name, the title of the work, the date, the medium and the location –

Jacques-Louis David, The Oath of the Horatii, 1785, oil on canvas, Paris, Louvre

5. Bibliography: You are not required to supplement your essay with a Bibliography.

reflection paper

September 12, 2025/in General Questions /by Besttutor

Write an essay

Your presentation or paper should address a theme from the second half of the course that you find interesting.  For ideas, review chapters 9-23 of Nadeau and Barlow (N-B): French politics, government, culture, legal system, multi-ethnic challenges, and France in Europe.

Suggested topics:

1. From the time of Napoleon I, the French Civil Code placed the family at the center of French society.  Yet the family of today is quite different from what it was in the 19th century.  How is the French State handling these changes?

2. On May 12, 2006, the New York Times published an article entitled “Higher Learning in France Clings to Its Old Ways.” The journalist paints a grim picture of university education in France, quoting one disenchanted graduate of Paris-Nanterre who calls the universities nothing more than factories.  The complaints may be legion, but solutions do not come easy in a society used to having the state pay for everything. What sort of future do you see for young people in France today compared to their American counterparts?

3. A few years ago, a New York Times journalist asked the question: Has France become a museum? To what extent do you believe that France clings excessively to its past and cultural heritage or do you find evidence that the French have achieved — or can achieve — a balance between  preservation and innovation?  Be sure to cite references to document your opinion.

4. Nadeau and Barlow originally began their research in France with the goal of understanding why the French were anti-globalization. They quickly decided that the French weren’t against globalization and set about to discover more of what makes the French the way they are. Write an essay or create a project discussing France’s relationship to globalization. Would you agree with Nadeau and Barlow’s assessment? Why might it appear that the French are resistant to globalization? And what evidence or examples show that this characterization may not be true? What conclusions have you reached after studying French civilization? (Rereading the introduction to Sixty Million Frenchmen, as well as Chapter 23 and the afterword, will give you a good context for this topic.)

If you have another topic in mind, please clear your idea with me first.

Project requirements:

· Papers:  300-500 words (OK if longer) and have at least 3-5 references showing that you researched the topic
