For this assignment you will write a paper in which you explore a common transition faced by older adults. This transition may relate to a health transition (e.g. illness), a transition in living environment (e.g., a move to an assisted living facility or a long-term care facility), or dying or death. The emphasis in this assignment is to examine how older adults face into a transition, including the psychosocial, existential, and family ramifications. For instance, you might choose to focus on grief and loss as a response to moving into a long-term care facility. Within this paper, you will examine how older adults experience this grief and loss, how family members respond, as well as existential issues that may arise from this transition (e.g., Who am I now that I am institutionalized?)


Assignment 3 must:


  • be seven to eight pages in length; not to exceed eight, excluding title page, references, and appendices;
  • be typed, double–spaced, single-sided, with margins of 2.5 cm on all sides;
  • follow the style guidelines found in the 6th edition of the APA Publication Manual; and
  • include references to provide evidence of application of theory.

hypothesis, the researchers identified a group of patients whose initial
diagnosis on admission was colon cancer. Another group of admitted patients
with non-cancer diagnosis were used as a control group. Patients in both groups
were interviewed to find out about their dietary habits. The interviewers did
not know which patients had cancer and which did not. Table 1 shows data that
resulted from the study.

Question 2: To
investigate the association between psychological variables and coronary heart
disease, a group of researchers randomly sampled persons without coronary heart
disease into groups as having behavior pattern type A and type B. These persons
were followed over a period of time to see how many developed coronary heart
diseases (CHD).

The type A behavior pattern is defined as manifesting an intense
sustained drive for achievement and as being continually involved in
competition and deadline. Type B is more relaxed, not showing this intense
drive and involvement in competition. The researchers hypothesize that people
with type A personalities will exhibit a greater amount of CHD because of the
psychological stress of their way of life.  Table 2 shows data that
resulted from the study.

an earlier study of coronary heart disease and personality type, trained
