Studies have shown that rural Americans have higher rates of chronic disease and poor overall health compared to those living in urban areas. They suffer higher incidence of disease and disabilities, increased mortality, cand lower life expectancies. In rural America, we find fewer job opportunities, a poorer population, and social isolation which all increase the risk for poor health. Also fewer health care practitioners, especially doctors, increases the healthcare risks for this typically older and poorer population.

We also see a disparity in healthcare insurance coverage within this vulnerable population. Very few have employer provided insurance nor do they qualify for Medicaid. These and many other issues we face as APN’s in providng quality care to our rural population.

The Agency of Healthcare and Research and Quality (AHRQ) is developing initiatives to address healthare disparitiesThe Agency of Healthcare Research and promotes the use of four steps:

  1. Developing a collaborative process of research involving researchers and community representatives
  2. Recognizing the community as a unit of identity
  3. Building on the strengths of resources within the community
  4. Facilitating collaborative, equitable partnerships in all phases of research and utilizing an empowering process
  5. Promoting co-learning and capacity building among all partners
  6. Integrating knowledge generation and intervention for the mutual benefit of all partners.
  7. Emphasizing the local relevance of public health problems and multiple determinates of health and disease including biomedical, social, economic and physical environmental factors.
  8. Findings can be disseminated to all partners

This method benefits the rural community through the knowledge gained and the resources provided as well as developing a partnership with diverse experts to address the complex health issues. Utilizing the research findings specific interventions can be developed for the under served and may help eliminate rural health disparities.

Based on Sonderman and Abrahamson (1985). In treating a brain tumor with radiation, physicians want the maximum amount of radiation possible to bombard the tissue containing the tumors. The constraint is, however, that there is a maximum amount of radiation that normal tissue can handle without suffering tissue damage. Physicians must therefore decide how to aim the radiation so as to maximize the radiation that hits the tumor tissue subject to the constraint of not damaging the normal tissue. As a sample example of this situation, suppose there are six types of radiation beams (beams differ in where they are aimed and their intensity) that can be aimed at a tumor. The region containing the tumor has been divided into six regions: three regions contain tumors and three contain normal tissue. The amount of radiation delivered to each region by each type of beam is shown in the file (14_90.xlsx. Listeners value the Low Cost Foodies for their insider knowledge and lighthearted banter. Your writing partners are out reporting for an upcoming episode and will not be able to help in the scripting process this week. Accordingly, you have been tasked with managing the entire script of this week’s podcast on the premises and hidden premises in the fast food industry.

Step 2: Review assignment requirements.

Introduce the Low Cost Foodies audience to the concepts of premise and hidden premise. These can be found everywhere in the fast food industry, but it takes some understanding and careful attention to identify them. In a two-page (500-word) podcast script, composed of two separate segments, explore the notions of premise.
