Outlining an Introduction Speech

Objective

Prepare an introduction speech Outline. (Please read all directions thoroughly and email me if you are unclear.)

Assignment Overview

In this assignment, you will explore the process used to prepare a basic speech. You will select a potential speech topic and outline your topic selection.

Deliverables

A one-page (250-word) outline See suggested format shown below.

Step 1  Review the information involved in planning a speech.

The main steps involved in preparing any type of speech include the following and should always remember the Preacher’s Axiom that is this: First, you tell them what you are going to tell them, then you tell them, and then you tell them what you told them.  You do this by these steps:

  • Choose the Right Topic
  • Narrow Your Topic
  • Locate Supporting Material
  • Structure Your Speech
  • Prepare an Outline
  • Practice
  • Deliver Your Speech

Step 2  Prepare an introduction speech.

In a one-page (250-word) outline, you are not writing your speech, just the outline, consider the following as you prepare your speech:

  • Brainstorm what your fellow classmates might find interesting about you for this introduction speech. Consider family history, stories about your childhood, significant life events, or your accomplishments.
  • Narrow your ideas down to a specific topic, theme, or anecdote. List the specific topic or title for your speech.
  • When locating supporting materials for your introduction speech, think about any visual aids that may support your delivery.
  • Remember to think about how you will open and close your introduction speech. Include those notes in your outline.

Step 3  Save and submit your assignment.

When you have completed the assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to your instructor using the dropbox.

Here is a general method of outlining your speech that I urge you to use:

                                         Outline Format

Hook – this is the opening statement to your speech. It should be a statement that arouses interest and makes your reader/audience want to read or hear more. You pique their interest and they want to know more!

Thesis Statement (TS) – this is the main focus of your speech and I suggest it always be explicit. You want to first tell the audience what you are going to tell them and this is done in the TS. Make it explicit by listing the three points of your speech, not just by stating something like this: There are three reasons why cars are necessary, but rather like this: The three reasons cars are necessary are they are used to get people from point A to point B, they are used in emergencies, and they are useful for family transportation. See the difference between explicit and implied? Making your TS explicit is the best way to inform your audience in beginning speeches.

Support – These are the words in at least three body paragraphs that follow your TS in order of what you have listed for the three points. Use one paragraph to write about each point. Please have at least five sentences per paragraph since that can help ensure that you have enough support for that point.

Conclusion – In the conclusion, you will want to restate your TS but not in the exact same words you used in the introduction paragraph. Just use slightly different wording to say the same thing without boring your readers/audience with the same words from the introduction. Then you will want to end your conclusion with the last statement that will leave the audience with a warm and fuzzy feeling that appeals somehow to the emotions. We suggest this technique because it is known that folks remember the first and last of speeches, most times, and you should always want to make your speech memorable, so end with a memorable statement.

I hope this helps. If you have questions, be sure to email me. Best wishes!

Dr. Williams 🙂

REPLY TO jENNIFER 2 APA CITATIONS CURRENT DUE IN 6 HOURS

Unintended pregnancy is something I know very much about, I had an unintended pregnancy at the age of 19.  Never in my wildest dream did I think it would happen to me, I knew the consequences of an intimate relationship, but at my age, I was invincible.  While I was sitting with my OB/GYN my options were discussed, and at that time there weren’t all these different ways to deal with an unintended pregnancy, you either had the baby or had an abortion, but abortions were not as “easy” as they are today.  Pills were not given and 10 minute procedures were not around, there was intense bleeding and pain and there was a very real chance that the reproductive organs could be damaged and the patient could never have children later in life.                I chose to have my child and I bless each day that I have her, but not all young women can easily make that decision and with advances in medicine they have more options than ever before.  I was amazed over this past week when I went to Planned Parenthood with a staff member, who is alone, we went over the many options that she had and she was educated in the different ways she could choose her way.  I am not saying that I agree with her choice or the choices of the other women that were in the waiting room, but the idea that they had many options is what I was impressed with.                The contraceptives offered to young adults, presently allow for options based on what fits their needs.  Teen pregnancy is prevalent in the nation and with recently approved long acting contraceptives for adolescents there are ways to help teens be more responsible with intimate relationships.  Intrauterine devices and implants are the choice for the main line of contraception for all women including the young adults.  Currently prescriptions for contraceptives show that the main choice is pills for young adults, some feel it is due to barriers of knowledge and cost (K. McKellen, 2018).  Nurse practitioners will be at the forefront of providing education to their patients, helping reduce the number of teen pregnancies and ensuring that all their patients have access to them.  According to a 2015 survey, only 3.3% of adolescents are using LARC’s for their last sexual encounter.  What has been found through this study was that the type of contraceptive chosen by the patient was directly based on the type of provider they see (S. Dixon, 2018).  Again, this is where nurse practitioners will be vital in aiding how teens and their parents view the use of LARC’s. How do you personally feel about youth and LARC’s?ReferencesMcKellen, e. a. (2018). The Latest in Teen Pregnancy Prevention: Long-Acting Reversible       Contraception. The Journal of Pediatric Medicine, e91-e97.Dixon, e. a. (2018). What Do Parents Know and Believe About LARC Use in Teens?       Journal of Adolescent Health, S37-S140.

Discussion: Ethical Issues With an Aging Population

According to the CDC, “in the United States, the proportion of the population aged >65 years is projected to increase from 12.4% in 2000 to 19.6% in 2030,” (CDC, 2003, para. 2). Caring for this aging population is going to be one of the greatest challenges facing the health care industry. Not only will the number of individuals requiring care rise, but so will the cost. As poignantly stated by Crippen and Barnato, “unless we change the practice of medicine and reduce future costs, and explicitly address the ethical dilemmas we face, there may come a time when our kids simply cannot afford us” (2011, p. 128).

In this Discussion, you will examine the ethical issues that the United States and other nations must address when faced with the health care challenges of an aging population.

                                                    To prepare:

Consider the ethical aspects of health care and health policy for an aging population.

Review the Hayutin, Dietz, and Mitchell report presented in the Learning Resources. The authors pose the question, “What are the economic consequences, now and for future generations of taxpayers if we fail to adapt our policies to the changing reality of an older population?” (p. 21). Consider how you would respond to this question. In addition, reflect on the ethical decisions that arise when dispersing limited funds.

Contemplate the impact of failing to adjust policy in accordance with the changing reality of an older population.

Reflect on the ethical dilemmas that arise when determining expenditures on end-of-life health care.

Post an explanation of the ethical standards you believe should be used in determining how resources should be allocated for an aging population and end-of-life care. Then, provide an analysis of the ethical challenges related to the preparation for the provision of such health care.

Assessment of Cardiac Status

This week’s graded discussion topic relates to the following Course Outcomes (COs).

Esther Jackson is a 56-year-old black female who is 1-day post-op following a left radical mastectomy. During morning rounds, the off-going nurse shares with you during bedside report that the patient has been experiencing increased discomfort in her back throughout the night and has required frequent help with repositioning. She states that the patient was medicated for pain approximately 2 hours ago but is voicing little relief and states that you might want to mention that to the doctor when he rounds later this morning. With the patient appearing to be in no visible distress, you proceed on to the next patient’s room for report.

Approximately 1 hour later, you return to Ms. Jackson’s room with her morning pills and find her slumped over the bedside stand in tears. The patient states, “I don’t know what is wrong, I don’t feel right. My back hurts and I’m just so tired. What is wrong with me?” The patient refuses to take her medications at this time stating that she is starting to feel sick to her stomach.

Just then the nursing assistant comes into the patient’s room to record Ms. Jackson’s vital signs, you take this opportunity to quickly research the patient’s medication record to determine if she has a medication ordered for nausea. Upon return, the nursing assistant hands you the following vital signs: T 37, R 18, and BP 132/54, but states she couldn’t get the patient’s pulse because “it is all over the place.”

Please address the following questions related to the scenario.

1.What do you suspect is the cause of the patient’s symptoms?

2.Describe the course of action that you will take to confirm this suspicion and prevent further decline.

3.What further assessments, lab values, and tests will likely be ordered for this patient and how often? If testing is to be completed more than once, please explain the rationale for doing so.

4.While you are caring for this patient, how will you ensure that the needs of your other patients are

nutrition

1. Find two sources featuring nutrition information. One source should be an example of accurate nutrition information and the other should be an example of something that you feel contains signals for poor nutrition information. You may find your information in magazines or on a website. Provide adequate citation of your sources so that I may be able to access the information. SUGGESTIVE HINT IF YOU ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY: To find poor nutrition advise – go to a supermarket and look at the “rag” magazines – there is always poor nutrition information listed within some magazine i.e., a star went on a wacky diet etc.

2. For the accurate nutrition information, search reliable websites —NOTE – BE CAREFUL NOT TO CHOOSE “ADVERTISMENTS” FOR YOUR INFORMATION for example – information about the benefits of a particular diet supplied by those on the diet – or an article about the benefits regarding a vitamin put out by a vitamin manufacturer.  Not saying the diet or the vitamin, referenced above might or might not be good or bad but when information is supplied by the people who could benefit from the use or purchase of a product – there are red flags that we should be aware of.

3. After reading the information in the textbook and using the information you found, write 1 paragraph, minimum 100 words, identifying why one article is an example of good nutrition information and write 1 paragraph, minimum 100 words, why the other is not an example of good nutrition. Use your textbook to reference your examples.  This should be a typed, double-spaced, one-inch margin, font size 10-12. YOU MUST PROVIDE THE CITATIONS OF YOUR SOURCES.
