Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. Family Versus Individual Settings

         Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) posits maladaptive behavior and dysfunctional thoughts that relate to self, others, and the

world that are rooted in illogical or irrational assumptions. This individual view of the world, self, and others are central to the

determination of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors and by changing these, behavior can also be changed.  (Wheeler, 2014). 

According to Patterson (2014), family therapy is usually focused on behavioral outcomes which when it comes to cognitive-

behavioral therapy (CBT), the term behavior tends to be the primary focus. Wheeler (2014) states that CBT can also be further broken

down into primary and secondary thinking which is a structured hierarchy. Cognitive processes are understood as

primary secondary with primary thinking recognizing negative, intermittent, and irrational thinking as an ongoing human action.

Secondary thinking views the cultural and social world in a more positive, rational, and determinant term.  

         Therapeutic alliance has been identified as one of the most important factors in individual therapy of any kind (Nichols and Davis,

2020) It is, however, more difficult to establish a therapeutic alliance in family or group therapy due to a number of different reasons

such as an increased number of participants with individual thoughts and feelings.  Assessment is a pivotal part of CBT and

the advantages of a behavioral emphasis are that it can provide definitive goals, baseline data, and a reliable way to measure

therapeutic success. Certain disadvantages are that by using a structured environment in family therapy, the active family interactions

can not be viewed. All that is seen is individual patient reports (Nichols and Davis, 2020).    

         A study by Thimm and Antonsen (2014) examined the effectiveness of group CBT for depression in a routine outpatient setting,

looking also at predictors of dropout and response. Results suggested a large reduction in anxiety and depression among

participants who received CBT with these observed results maintained at a three-month follow-up. CBT is a very effective therapy with

individual clients but can prove to be challenging in group and family settings.  The video of the Johnson Family Session (2013c) 

is an example of a group of women who had experienced similar trauma but had very different thoughts and feelings about

the experience.  The therapist may find the establishment of a trusting therapeutic alliance somewhat difficult in this situation.

Week 5 Discussion: Initial Post 

StrengthsFinder Assessment 

Upon completion of the Strengths Finder Assessment, this online tool concluded that my top five themes are Achiever, Woo, Restorative, Learner, and Positivity. I felt these results accurately described me, as I have always been one to want to go above and beyond, win people over, solve problems, learn, and create a positive and inclusive environment. 

Two Core Values 

 Based on the strengths that describe me, it is essential to assess these themes and understand core values I should incorporate into my daily routine to balance me out. The first core value I aim to adopt is recognition. Achievers often focus on being busy and forget to recognize when they have completed a task. According to Tom Rath, achievers should “Attach timelines and measurement to goals so that effort leads to defined progress and tangible outcomes” (2007). He says that achievers need to recognize and celebrate their victories instead of immediately moving on to their next task. 

 The second core value I intend to adopt is realism. Some individuals may misinterpret my positive attitude as naivety. For this reason, I must communicate that I understand unfortunate events can occur; however, I prefer to focus on the good rather than the bad. Showing people my realistic view on life can better help them understand my enthusiasm, and hopefully inspire them also to incorporate more positivity into their lives. 

Two Strengths

 For me, I feel I need to work on being more deliberative. I am not one to always look at all my options and assess all the risks. I find myself just doing things rather than planning or anticipating what may go wrong. I feel I can strengthen this characteristic by teaming up with someone who is more cautious and analytical when it comes to decision-making. 

     I also feel I need to work on being more of a commander. I find myself too passive, in that, I do not like being in charge of big decisions. Instead, I lean on my teammates and work towards an agreement between all individuals to reach a conclusion. I also find myself avoiding confrontation at all times because I do not like conflict. According to Marshall and Broome, firm leaders can resolve a dispute when necessary (2017). I strive to add command to my list of strengths as an advanced practice registered nurse. 

Two Characteristics

 Some characteristics I aim to improve on are my active listening skills and appreciating individualization. As someone who works in a fast-paced environment, I tend to have a selective hearing to pick out important things that people say; however, I tend to tune out the finer details that I do not need to know immediately. While this may be good for working in the emergency department where nurses do focused assessments and work quickly, it is not something that I am proud of. As a family nurse practitioner (FNP), I understand that gathering the full picture from patients will be necessary to appropriately assess and treat them. Mckenna et al. note, “Effective listening, as a quality of effective communication has been promoted by the nursing profession as a way of demonstrating care to patients and their families” (2020). 

 I also strive to become more appreciative of individualization. It is easy to get fixated on wanting to work with others who are like me with the drive to finish tasks while maintaining a positive attitude and solving problems along the way. For this reason, it can be hard for me to work with individuals who procrastinate, have a negative attitude, or ignore details. Rath explains that those who appreciate individualization can figure out what their team members do best and capitalize on their talents, skills, or knowledge (2007). I aim to incorporate this into my practice.

Leadership Profile

     In their research, Gallup scientists found that people have specific areas where they have a greater potential for finding success, so they should focus on improving their strengths rather than their weaknesses (Rath, 2007). The results from my strength finder assessment showed that my top five themes are strategic, input, belief, empathy, and developer. For the most part, I find these results to be accurate. I am strategic in that I have a very logical way of thinking, and can adapt my thoughts to different situations (Rath, 2007). My second strength was the theme of input, and this is accurate in that I am inquisitive and am always seeking new information (Rath, 2007). I find that the belief theme is a very accurate strength because I have strong beliefs that guide my life and give it meaning (Rath, 2007). I also have a great deal of empathy, as many nurses do (Rath, 2007). Lastly, the developer theme fits me because I can always find and see potential in others (Rath, 2007). While I found these results accurate, they were not exactly what I anticipated or would have applied to myself. I hope to take advantage of these new insights into my strengths and build on them to become a strong leader.

Core Values

     Leaders must be grounded in a set of core values that guide their behaviors and leadership style and ensure they have the best interests of their coworkers at heart; otherwise, there is no real and effective leadership (Marshall & Broome, 2017). With that in mind, I need to identify my core values and work on strengthening them. I need to work on becoming more candid. I am often so concerned with others’ feelings that it holds me back from being frank and sharing my opinion. A leader must possess this ability, as leaders often have difficult situations with those under them, and must be candid. However, this must be offset with a certain amount of grace and kindness to ensure one does not come off as being overly harsh or rude. A second core value that I feel I could strengthen would be optimism. I have always been a very optimistic person, but over the years of being a nurse have become less so. Optimism is a value that is essential for a leader. It is essential to be optimistic to encourage those who are under you and keep their spirits high.

Strengths

     In Tom Rath’s book, he explains 34 themes leaders might possess where they are exceptionally talented (2007). The command theme is an area that I need to work on improving (Rath, 2007). An effective leader needs to be able to take command. I can do this, but I am more than happy to sit back and let others take charge. I do not like to impose my ideas on others. If it is warranted, I can take command, but it is my instinct to give others the chance to do so first. While I do not want to be pushy, I do need to work on strengthening my ability to take command. Another theme in which I would like to improve upon is the theme of being deliberative (Rath, 2007). Typically, I make decisions quickly and move on them without overthinking the situation. While this can be good, I do believe that as a leader, I need to work on weighing all the options and being more deliberate in my decisions.

Characteristics

     A nurse leader’s characteristics not only affect those they lead but can also influence patient outcomes as well (Adams et al., 2018). This is just another reason why I must work on improving both my strengths and my weaknesses to become the best leader I can be. A leader must have a high level of self-esteem, or those who follow them will have a more difficult time believing in them. I could most definitely work on improving my self-esteem as a leader. Leadership is not a role I fall into naturally, so it is easy to second guess myself. I need to have more confidence in myself as a leader to ensure that others can place their confidence in me. Another characteristic I could strengthen is my engagement. A leader must be engaged to encourage those under them to want to become engaged. This is an area where I could improve upon, as I am not always the most engaged.

Conclusion

 A leader must determine their strengths and their weaknesses so that they can play to their strengths and work on strengthening their weaknesses. In preparation for becoming a nurse leader, this is necessary for me to do. The strength finder assessment found my strongest themes to be strategic, input, belief, empathy, and developer. This offered me a new insight into my strengths and identified areas for me to grow. Two fundamental core values I would like to strengthen are my candor and optimism. Two strength themes I would like to work on improving are command and deliberative. Two characteristics that I believe would make me a better leader if I strengthened are my self-esteem and engagement. Improving upon these strengths will not only make me a better leader but a better person.
