States she had tripped and fell while barefoot scraping the top of her foot on the pavement. She denies any other injury from the incident. Over the past 24 hours the wound has had “smelly” drainage. Has been experiencing generalized achiness, but denies fever and chills. Did not seek medical attention at the time of injury. Has been using hydrogen peroxide to clean her wound. Is unclear of her last tetanus vaccination. Patient PMHx significant for DM II. States that she takes her medications when she remembers, and does not always check her blood sugar.

Emmanuel is 5 years of age and has suffered from asthma for the last 2 years. One evening, his mother poured him some milk and put him to bed. Shortly afterward, Emmanuel woke up wheezing and coughing. As he gasped for air, he became more and more anxious. His mother ran for his inhaler, but he was too upset and restless to use it. Emmanuel’s skin became moist with sweat, and as he began to tire, his wheezing became quieter. His mother called 911 and waited anxiously for the ambulance to arrive.

1. Emmanuel uses a corticosteroid inhaler for the management of his asthma. What is the mechanism of action of this drug? How is its action different from the β2-agonist inhalants?

2. Why does someone with severe asthma become physically fatigued during a prolonged attack? What are the physiologic events that occur during an attack?

3. One of the complications of respiratory fatigue is the development of hypercapnia. How does the body compensate for an increase in CO2? What are the effects of hypercapnia on the central nervous system?

Health Promotion Plan Presentation

Instructions

Complete the following:

· Prepare a 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation with a voice-over and detailed speaker notes that reflects your hypothetical presentation. This presentation is the implementation of the plan you created in Assessment 1. The speaker notes should be well organized. Be sure to include a transcript of the voice-over (please refer to the PowerPoint tutorial). The transcript can be submitted on a separate Word document.

· Simulate the hypothetical face-to-face educational session addressing the health concern and health goals of your selected community individual or group.

· Imagine collaborating with the hypothetical participant(s) in setting goals for the session, evaluating session outcomes, and suggesting possible revisions to improve future sessions.

 

 

SUPPORTING EVIDENCE

Support your plan with at least three professional or scholarly references, published within the last 5 years, which may include peer-reviewed articles, course study resources, and Healthy People 2030 resources.

2. Jerry Thomas is a 26-year-old type 1 diabetic. He was originally diagnosed at the age of 14, and currently manages his disease with an intensive regimen of insulin injections. Jerry is employed as a schoolteacher and soccer coach. He presents today with a 2-day history of vomiting and diarrhea. He has been closely monitoring his blood glucoses, and is using regular insulin for high blood glucose levels. He has only been able to tolerate liquids such as Gatorade, but today he is unable to even tolerate that, and comes to the clinic for evaluation of possible diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). (Learning Objective 9)

 

 

a. Describe the pathophysiology of DKA and why it occurs in patients with type 1 diabetes.

 

b. Based on the diagnosis of DKA, what assessment findings does the nurse correlate to this disorder?

 

c. The physician orders a complete metabolic panel, and Jerry’s blood glucose is 425. Other lab values include a serum sodium of 152, serum potassium of 3.0, and BUN of 64. What is your assessment of these results?

 

d. Explain why it is important for Jerry to continue to take his insulin even though his oral intake is decreased.
