But what do the numbers actually mean? What is the actual state of the economy, in terms of its ability to generate jobs for its citizens?

Questions:

  1. What is the labor force participation rate? What was the labor force participation rate in 2008? How has it changed since 2008 and what does this change imply for the state of the economy? Does the labor force participation rate effect the unemployment rates reported in the media?
  1. How is unemployment measured and reported?
  1. What is a discouraged worker? Are they included in the basic unemployment rate? Are they included in any measure of unemployment? How has the number of discouraged workers changed since 2008?   1. What is frictional unemployment? What is structural unemployment? What is cyclical unemployment? What economic policies should be used to deal with these types of unemployment? Which type is most prevalent in today’s economy?
  1. Unemployment insurance is designed to help the unemployed. Do these benefits encourage or discourage a person from looking for work? How long should these benefits last?
  1. Does the existence of unions help or hurt the overall economy and the employment rate? Why or why not?

Health care needs of returning military and their families

Deployment, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), balancing family with long work hours are all part of an everyday military life.  Mental, physical and social changes occur on a daily basis, affecting the health care needs of our military.  However, events and issues like these can affect veterans and their families throughout their lives, even though they deserve the best, veterans can be neglected.  From personal experience, military life is unique.  A community within a community, fighting for our nation’s best interest.  This paper reflects how we as nurses can be the best advocate for them.

Health Care Needs

Looking at health needs of veterans and their families, they can be physical, psychological or psychosocial.  Physical includes combat injury which links closely with psychological concerns including PTSD and substance abuse: drugs and alcohol (Spelman, Hunt, Seal & Burgo-Black, 2012).  Psychosocial effects the family directly, including marital, financial instability and social isolation.  Together all these have a significant impact on the everyday life, and the reorientation from deployments and adjustment back into the community (Spelman et al., 2012).

Nurse Advocate for Military

Nurses are in the frontline of health care.  Therefore, nurses are in the critical position to speak out and be the best advocate for our clients (Laureate, 2012).  However, providing safe and high-quality health care is a collaboration effort, working in unity with other health care professionals and administrators (Milstead, 2016).  The American Nurses Association (ANA) operates in unison with the Veterans Health Administration and the Department of Defense as advocates to improve veterans’ health care needs.  Another valuable advocacy agency is Mental Health America; with over 200 associates in 41 States, they provide both current and former military with information to prevent the stigma related to mental health issues like PTSD and addiction, assisting in the reintegrating into family life (Mental Health America, 2016).  With nurses working in unison with organizations like these, promotes success for implementing and changing public health policy.

Development of Advocacy Skills

According to K. Tomajan, author of Advocating for Nurses and Nursing, all nurses are capable and have the opportunity to make an invaluable impact on their profession (2012). By being an advocacy for their profession and their clients they can improve care, making positive changes for the future of health care (Tomajan, 2012).  By using education, evidence-based knowledge and working in unison with other health care professionals and administrators, we can build a healthcare system with the patient at the center.  Although advocacy starts in nursing school, it does not stop there with the filing away the information but continues to grow in all aspects of the profession throughout the nurses life (Begley, 2010).

Another way of developing advocacy skills is by joining and being actively involved in organizations like the ANA or the National Association of School Nurses.  These both provide advocacy skills, webinars, conferences and connections to other like-minded people, promoting, supporting and changing the health care for our future.

Nurse Advocate Responsibility

From Florence Nightingale to present day, it has been the nurse’s responsibility to be an advocate; initially for their patients but now also for the developing healthcare (Begley, 2010). Today nurse are encouraged to have a questioning attitude, work in collaboration with other health care professionals and be the voice of health care to ensure the safety of the patient (Begley, 2010).  Also, the professional Code of Ethics for Nurses gives nurses a sets standard of care to work within, having sound knowledge and a responsibility to do what is in the client’s best interests (Begley, 2010).

When applying accountability and nurse advocacy to practice, nurses need to speak out and be the voice of their clients. In the case of the veterans, an example can be observing, implementing and evaluating a program to assist in the adjustment for school age children to deployed family members, and monitoring the reintegration into family life. Also, military spouses play a vital role in the rehabilitation of veterans after deployment. By working together, implementing a rehabilitation team, we can assist spouses to adapt and understand behavior, reuniting the family as a unit, providing a healthier and better outcome in their life.

Conclusion

Throughout history, nurses have always been at the forefront of health care delivery. Today nurses remain at the center of healthcare, and it is essential that nurses continue to grow to shape our future. So by working in collaboration with other health care professionals and administrators, advocating for the best interests of our patients using evidence-based research, we can provide the best health care for our clients, military and non-military.

MN502-4: Develop a philosophy that supports advanced nursing practice reflecting the values, beliefs, and cultural competencies relative to nursing practice, science, and theory.

Now that you have spent the last 8 weeks discussing theory development and exploring models and philosophies that guide advance practice nursing, it is time for you to put it all together. In this Assignment, you will create a presentation using any form of presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint®, Prezi™, Movenote™, Powtoons™, Slidedog™, and so on). Your presentation should bring together the theory that best fits your concept of advance practice nursing, the model that you will use to translate this into practice, and your final philosophy of advance practice nursing related to your role after graduation.

Please remember that your presentation should contain slides that have bullet points. The bullets should number no more than four to six per slide. The bullet point is not written as a complete sentence. It contains key words. You, as the presenter will explain in depth what each bullet point means in the audio portion of the presentation. Slides may contain graphics, but should be uncluttered. Background and font colors should be of sufficient contrast to make reading them easy on the eyes. Attention to colors should be paid so that a person who is colorblind can easily read the presentation.

Assignment Details

The presentation should consist of a series of slides that include:

  • Title Slide: A title slide that identifies the title of the presentation and name of the student.
  • Introduction Slide: An introduction slide that includes brief information about you and your program track. The slide should also explain to the audience the purpose of the presentation.
  • Model Slides: The third and fourth slides will address your chosen model. The bullet points should consist of the specific characteristics of the model. You will need at least one citation that identifies where the model came from. Your audio will expound upon the model and what the characteristics mean. The fourth slide should include why you chose the model and how you will apply it in practice.
  • Theory Slides: The next three slides will focus on your chosen theory. The first slide should present your theory and why you chose it. The next slide would present the key concepts of the theory and how it has been used to date in past research no older than 5 years ago. The third slide will discuss how you will use this theory in practice as an advance practice nurse upon graduation.
  • Philosophy Slide: The next area will consist of one slide that presents your philosophy of advance practice nursing in the post-graduate role you will assume. The philosophy statement will consist of one to three sentences that distill the essence of what you believe advance practice nursing is and your conception of nursing as a profession. It is written in the first person and present tense. It is a personal statement of your beliefs about the profession of nursing. This should present guiding statements for your future practice in the advanced practice role. An example of a philosophy statement might read this way: Advanced practice nursing takes the art and science of nursing to a level of “other” and “self” interacting together to reach a state of optimal wellness guided with compassion and love for the culture of the “other.”
  • Graphical Slide: The next-to-last slide will be a graphical representation of how the model, theory, and your philosophy fit together.
  • Conclusion Slide: The last slide will be a conclusion that brings together everything you have presented. It is not a summary that just reiterates what you presented. It is a judgment about what you presented and bring the audience home, ending the presentation on a positive note about the future.

You will need supporting citations for your theory and model slides, and possibly for your philosophy, as appropriate. You will include the citations where appropriate and your very last slide will be a reference slide.

The total slide count should not exceed 15 slides. This does not include the reference slide(s) or the title slide.
