1. Within our health care system there are a number of stakeholders that influence the health care policy development process and ultimately help shape our health care policies.
   • Government (primarily federal and state governments) and interest groups like the American Medical Association, AARP, and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation can have a direct impact on the outcome on the type of health care we receive.
   • Patients (the largest consumers of health care) are stakeholders in the health care system, and the needs and wants of the public also drive the decisions made by health care decision-makers.
   • This assignment will help you better understand the role and influences of the main stakeholders in the health care policy development process.

     Research the main stakeholders in the health care policy development process.

     Select one of the main stakeholders at the government level (federal or state), a professional organization, or an interest group.

     Write a 525- to 700-word paper that details the importance and impact this stakeholder has on the policy development process. Include the following in your paper:

   • Identify the stakeholder and their level in the policy development process.
   • Describe their role in the policy development process.
   • Describe why the stakeholder identified is important in the policy development process.
   • Describe the impact the selected stakeholder has on the policy development process.

Nurses often become motivated to change aspects within the larger health care system based on their real-world experience. As such, many nurses take on an advocacy role to influence a change in regulations, policies, and laws that govern the larger health care system.

For this assignment, identify a problem or concern in your state, community, or organization that has the capacity for advocacy through legislation. Research the issue and use the “Advocacy Through Legislation” template to complete this assignment.

You are required to cite to a minimum of three sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and relevant to nursing practice.

When we think of advocacy, many nurses think about how they advocate for their patients and/or families. Or you may think of situations where you advocate for a colleague, direct report, or team. Those are all legitimate aspects of advocacy and important for nurses. You’ve probably heard an instructor or mentor say that in aspiring to executive-level leadership, a transition occurs in your outlook. Your view expands exponentially as you become responsible for many teams and sometimes an entire organization. For this week’s discussion about advocacy, think about a policy, cause, or large-scale issue for which you are, or can become, an advocate or champion. As you look at successful nurse leaders and executives, you’ll very likely find that they are involved in some cause such as breast cancer research, childhood obesity, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa, or the heroin epidemic, and so on. In your growth toward senior levels of leadership, begin to think about where and how you will be involved as an advocate or champion.

Report from day shift nurse:

Situation: Christopher Parrish is an 18-year-old male who was admitted at 1900 today. His mother visited him at his college dormitory and was very concerned with his health; he seemed weak and had lost weight since she last saw him. She took him to see his primary care provider, and the provider admitted him and has ordered a tube feeding. I placed an 8-Fr, 42-inch feeding tube in his right nares about an hour ago, and x-ray just called and confirmed placement in the stomach. The pump is in his room. He is up to the bathroom prn; otherwise bed rest.

Background: Christopher was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a child and has had frequent hospitalizations previously. He reports fatigue and has recently lost 6 kg (13.2 lb) after he registered at the local college and moved to live in a dormitory. Chris’s mom was here earlier, but she is a single parent and has two younger boys, so she had to go home.

Assessment: Christopher is awake and alert. His heart rate and rhythm are regular at 80-85/min. Breath sounds are fine with a respiratory rate at 18/min. His color is a bit pale. Blood pressure is 118/78 mm Hg. He reports no pain and states he’s not had much appetite the past few weeks. His belly is flat and nontender. Bowel sounds are normoactive.

Recommendation: Christopher is due for vital signs and assessment. The tube feeding just arrived, and you will need to start it on the pump. He needs 720 kilocalories over 8 hours overnight. His regular diet is high calorie, high fat, but he wasn’t too hungry this evening; just had a bit of his chocolate shake. You will need to give his pancreatic enzymes orally before you start the tube feeding. You should also assess his diet and reinforce patient education on nutrition.
