Students will complete an APA paper about the following case study.  The provided case study represents ethical issues of historical interest.

Case Study

A nurse has sued Memorial Hospital, charging that she was demoted after complaining about a heart surgeon tossing bloody tissue at her during an operation. The eight-page complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court by Sonja Morris alleges that Dr. Bryan Mahan tossed the 4-by-6-inch piece of tissue at her, hitting her on the leg during an open-heart surgery in August 2008. She contends Mahan made a joke about it to the other surgeons, saying, “Oh (expletive), I hit her. Can we get cultures on that?” Morris said she felt humiliated as the other surgeons chuckled. Mahan could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.

Morris claims that the incident was part of a pattern of harassing behavior by Mahan toward her. She also alleged that in June 2008, Mahan came up behind her and hit her in the head. She told him to stop, but two weeks later, he did it again, the suit alleged. Again she asked him to stop.

Chris Valentine, a spokesman for the hospital, declined to comment on the lawsuit. “Obviously, because it’s in legal hands, we’re not in a position to comment,” he said. Mahan is the chairman of cardiac and thoracic medicine at Memorial. He is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Morris has worked at the hospital as a nurse since June 1999. She has been a member of the heart surgery team since October 2007.

The incident with the bloody tissue occurred on Aug. 28, 2008, after normal working hours during an operation in which doctors were doing a procedure known as a pericardiectomy. The surgery involved removing a protective layer of tissue from the heart. Morris contends that was the bloody tissue that Mahan tossed at her. She said she was standing at a work station about 15 feet away from the operating table. Because the operation was still in progress, she was unable to immediately clean the part of her leg that the tissue hit. She filed a complaint about the incident but said that resulted in no disciplinary action.

On Dec. 10, she filed a notice of claim against Mahan and the hospital. Her complaint to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleged that she was subjected to a hostile work environment because of her gender. Seven days later, she said hospital administrators removed her from the heart surgery team, considered a prestigious position, and transferred her to the main operating room. The suit alleged that this action violated her First Amendment rights to petition the hospital to correct something she considered wrong.

Answer the following questions:

  1. What are the facts of the case? This should include: what do we need to know, who is involved in the situation, where does the ethical situation take place, and when does it occur?
  2. What is the precise ethical issue in regards to autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, fidelity, and justice?
  3. Identify the major principles, rules, and values of the case.  Values are sets of beliefs about good and bad, right and wrong, and about many other aspects of living and interacting in the society with others. A principle is a personal rule that governs personal behavior. A rule is generally imposed by a figure of authority, and used to guide and govern people.
  4. Is there legal ground for this case, if so what? Who is at fault? What legal action should be taken?
  5. Are there alternative to the actions completed in this case by both the nurse, physician, and healthcare facility? Do you feel the physician and nurse were following hospital protocol?
  6. If you were a member of the ethics committee at this facility, what actions or changes would you recommend changing? Why?

For the case study, an APA formatted paper should be used, and needs to include a title page, level headings, references and citations. This assignment should include at least 2 references and should be at least four pages in length. Answer to two peer short answer

What’s your biggest weakness?

The answer provided should not raise doubts about one ability to perform the job while the person should not seem sounding dishonest or arrogant by stating that they do not have weakness.

My answer: Being in the nursing profession, the ability to delegate tasks and promote team work is a necessity. But I find myself lacking the ability to delegate work between the team as better as I should. I am satisfied with the work I do and find it difficult to delegate. However, I am working on this weakness, and, during the last hours of my shift I practice the team work and cooperation.

Describe how will you resolve a conflict between a patient or co-worker?

People do not always get along with each other by fact due to personality differences. The employer asks the interviewee this question to hear how one can respond to cases of conflict diplomatically.

My answer: Conflicts do happen in a workplace and a professional attitude helps avoid the conflicts and minimize the damage they do to productivity. I was encountered with a same situation when in a meeting I proposed a plan and a coworker who was not really a supporter of my idea. I was taken aback by such harsh response, but I stayed calm and handled the situation. After a sober discussion I was able to deliver my point and my idea was accepted. After the meeting, that coworker apologized for misbehavior and admitted his wrong behavior.

Tell me about yourself?

This is one of the often asked first questions. The question is raised for the interviewee to make their first impression

My answer: I am motivated and compassionate person with a desire to contribute my services as a nursing practitioner. I am responsible of my actions and understand the demands of this field. I have around 10 years of experience in the nursing field and aim to promote the livelihood of people and be a nurturer and caregiver of the patients.

What is your biggest Weakness?

I think that weakness is something that you need to have in mind all the time if you want to improve yourself as a worker.  Sometimes I have the tendency of loosing the notion of time when I am working, but I am learning how prioritize duties and to delegate when is needed to avoid the delay of tasks.

Describe how you resolved conflict with a co-worker or patient?

The first thing I do is to really get the details off the problem. Once I know what is the motive of the problem I try to solve it. Getting to know why people react a certain way is sometimes difficult because sometimes people are not open to others especially if they are dealing with strong feelings such as despair or frustration in the case of a co-worker or just simply with a lethal disease in the case of a patient.

An example of this is a coworker that I noticed was getting late very often. So often that become a problem to give him the reports in time. In our work we have 30 minutes to give report and the time frame that he was giving me for doing so was 5 and sometimes no minutes at all. This situation was even frustrating for me because it was affecting my work and the care we were supposed to be giving to our patients. I realized that this nurse was a PHS and came all the way down to Miami from Nebraska. I realized that he was missing his family when he told me once that he had his family in that city. How he was a military nurse I asked him how military people use to solve their problems when needed. He told me that they were very quick to detect problems, point out he problems and give solutions. I acknowledge that I really liked the style so I explained to him how important of being in time for the night shift was for coworkers, patients and me.  I address the family problem as the motive he was sad and feeling alone in a new town and job and emphasize how important for the whole team was to have him completely on board as far he was working in the institution. He understood what I was saying and corrected it immediately.

Tell me about yourself?

I have been a nurse for 12 years. I have had my professional career through each nursing step such as: LPN, RN, BSN and now ARNP. I consider myself a proactive person, so I am always trying to improve myself as a nurse in a reasonable period of time. I am a nurse aware of the importance of training and development to advance my career to higher levels and standards. I feel my vocation stronger than ever and I really look to become a Dr. in nursing in a not so far future. Every time that I choose a job I ask myself what I can offer to that particular job. In this case I have to offer you lots of commitment and working professionalism. I have had experience in home health, hospice and penitentiary setting. I am a nurse that likes to work as part of a team, where also leadership and proactivity are allowed.

Discussion Question Final Week 10 Need it ASAP

Discussion Questions

By the due date assigned, post your response to the assigned discussion questions in the below Discussion Area. It is important to support what you say with relevant citations in the APA format from both the course materials and outside resources. Include the South University Online Library in your research activities utilizing not only the nursing resource database, but also those pertaining to education, business, and human resources.

No later than by the end of the week, review and comment on the discussion question responses posted by at least two of your peers. Be objective, clear, and concise. Always use constructive language. All comments should be posted to the appropriate topic in this Discussion Area.

Discussion Question

For this discussion, you are asked to review the student learning outcomes for this course and discuss how you met these outcomes. The intention here is to provide you an opportunity to “reflect” on the learning achieved during this term and how you successfully met these learning outcomes. If you do not feel you successfully met the objective, discuss your plans to successfully complete the objective in the future.

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Critically analyze current practice to formulate researchable problems.
  2. Evaluate research as the basis for decision-making to improve outcomes through translation into evidence-based practice.
  3. Synthesize an understanding of the research process through development of a proposal to address a nursing problem or focus area identified in nursing practice.
  4. Investigate ethical issues related to the conduct of scientific research, including informed consent, data management, data analysis, and protection of human subjects.
  5. Explore national and international initiatives and research priorities.

I feel that I have gained a core of formulating research questions to problems. I feel that I have gained a broad perspective improving outcomes with evidence based practice. The proposal development was a challenge initially, but everything seemed to fall into place until the statistical portion of the class. At that point, that is where I struggled and I feel that it is because I am not mathematically inclined.
Even though I knew about the Tuskegee incident, I learned more about the incident. This new gained information was an eye-opener for me, and I was more horrified at the events. I learned some new ethical issue related information regarding the informed consents and how difficult it was to write in “layman’s” terms as well as more information on the protection of human subjects. Most of the ethical information to me was understood or common knowledge and made sense.
Research is a process of discovering new knowledge. The charter rules (45 CFR 46.102 (d)) have been defined as “related to the survey results.” The purpose of the National Academy of Sciences is to “broaden the knowledge of the people in the physical, biological and social world” as well as the study of the knowledge of other types of knowledge reading, etc.), using a systematic process called a different scientific approach.
As far as the exploration of national and international initiatives and research priorities, this information is minimal. I feel that I have a lot to learn and that this class was only an exposure. Also, I feel that I need to explore these topics beyond this class to further myself and the core knowledge that was gained from this course.
Although I have learned to research, I feel that I am no expert but have gained good base knowledge. I am supposed to be able to form my own research. However, I feel that again with a good basic familiarity; I will probably never do my own research. Instead, I would be involved with research done by others or create performance improvements. I do not feel that I can create my own research trial all by myself and therefore would learn by others. This was an opportunity to “get my feet wet.” Additionally, since I am somewhat statistically challenged, I would need help with creating my own research. Therefore, I feel that I would never be alone and would bring in the people who would help me create a well-designed and well written study. In the end, it is all about teamwork.
When researches are done in the real world and money is spent and political people or doctors or scientists do the research. The research’s unique features are one of the common criteria published in academic journals. (Callaham, Michael et al., 2002) Diploma students usually need to conduct their first research as part of a dissertation.

Home>Homework Answsers>Nursing homework helpsmartLinda Stevens, LPN, works on a medical floor at the local hospital. One of the patients she has been assigned to take care of is Frank Gibbons, a 72-year-old newly diagnosed with diabetes (a condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin to control blood sugar levels). Part of Linda’s process of preparing to care for her patients is to review the patients’ charts for any new physician orders. She notes that Dr. Romero was in the previous evening and ordered the patient’s blood sugar to be checked at 8 a.m. According to the results, insulin is to be given. (The higher the level of blood sugar, the greater the amount of insulin that is given, based on a formula defined by the physician.) Linda is a “thinking nurse” and starts to question if this is an appropriate order. She realizes that breakfast trays arrive at 7:30 a.m. on her floor and that Mr. Gibbons will already have eaten when she checks his insulin level at 8 a.m. She knows that after eating, a person’s blood sugar normally increases for a few hours. This is why blood sugar tests are usually ordered when the patient has not eaten for a number of hours. Linda reasons that if she calculates the amount of insulin based on the temporarily elevated blood sugar levels, Mr. Gibbons will receive too much insulin and may have a negative reaction. Linda calls Dr. Romero to clarify the order. Dr. Romero states that he believed the breakfast trays did not arrive until 8:30 a.m. He thanks Linda for catching the error and changes the order. What might have happened if Linda had simply performed the blood sugar test exactly as ordered?Do you think Linda should have been considered responsible for the error if she had followed the orders exactly?Review the fiveWsandHowquestions in relation to this situation. Case Study: Through the Eyes of the Patient and the Health Care Professional

Allied health professionals are confronted with different death and dying practices. An effective allied health professional recognizes the importance of understanding different cultural practices, and learns how to evaluate the death, dying, and spiritual beliefs and practices across the cultures.

Read the two specified case histories and choose one for this assignment.

Chapter 4, “Stories of Abby: An Ojibwa Journey” and Chapter 14, “Stories of Shanti: Culture and Karma,” by Gelfland, Raspa, and Sherylyn, from End-of-Life Stories: Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries (2005), from the the GCU Library.

Identify your role as a health care professional in supporting Abby or Shanti’s dying rituals, and in creating strategies for displaying respect while still providing quality care. Integrate your strategies as you develop a care plan describing how you would approach the situation and care for the patient. Review the “Care Plan” template prior to beginning.

Include the following in your care plan:

  1. Communication: family and patient
  2. Treatment options that align with the specific culture
  3. Education: family and patient
  4. Family roles in the process
  5. Spiritual beliefs
  6. Barriers
  7. Cultural responses
  8. Any additional components that you feel would need to be addressed (from your perspective as a health care professional)

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.
