Disasters

Instructions:

1. Choose one of topic below and post your response. 
   1. Think about your own community and its residents or neighboring countries. What are some host factors that might increase its risk of experiencing a disaster? What environmental factors might be significant? In each case, identify the likely agent. What interventions could be included in a disaster plan to reduce these factors? 
   2. Provide a weblink to a story about a recent disasters and discuss the impact on human lives. 
   3. Access one or both of the Internet sites listed here. Report on the change in statistics for disasters or terrorism since the year 2000. Have the rates increased or decreased? What factors might be involved?

Communicable Diseases 

1. Choose one of the following topics and submit a short paper: 
   1. Research and present on the local, state, national, and global trends such as incidence, prevalence, and populations at risk for their communicable disease group.
   2. Investigate and present communicable diseases of interest in your local community. 
   3. Research the different types of organisms that could be used to create an epidemic as a result of bioterrorist activity, such as smallpox, anthrax, or botulism. Use the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Website to find out about organisms and their transmission routes, signs and symptoms, prevalence and incidence, and primary prevention treatment. Present your findings and discuss the differences in impact on the healthcare community and the population, and the role of the community health nurse. 
2. Your response should be 1-2 pages. APA format, at least 1 reference. 
3. Be sure to use standard English grammar and spelling (Location is Miami, FL).

1. Review the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website that has information and statistics about the elderly.
2. Look up one (1) statistic on the website or find a statistic among the information in Chapter 2 of the textbook.
3. Once you have the information that interests you, then answer the following questions:
   1. What statistic have you chosen?
   2. Why did you choose that statistic?
   3. What trends are represented?
   4. Why do you find this interesting?
   5. Do the statistic surprise you in any way?
   6. Did you think that the numbers would be different then they are?
4. Your paper should be:
   • One (1) page or more.
   • Use factual information from the textbook and/or appropriate articles and websites.
   • Cite your sources – type references according to the APA Style Guide.

The purpose of this assignment is to be able to incorporate the data-to-wisdom continuum into the practice of professional nurse. You are required to think of a concept/issue/idea in your practice area then relate it to the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. 

• Develop the concept/idea/issue you selected from your practice area into a relevant question. For example, if you are thinking of patient falls, you may think of a question such as: what factors that leads to patient falls in a nursing home? 
• Describe the question you developed and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific. 
• Identify the databases and search words you would use to search for data and information about your topic. 
• Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge. 
• Can informatics be used to gain wisdom?  
• Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search. 
• Must use at least 5 scholarly reference of which, at least 2 journal articles.  
• Limit the paper to three-five pages excluding the cover page, reference and appendices pages, using APA format. Writing style is at a graduate level. 

Health & Wellness Research Paper

A. Identify the strategy, technique, skill, activity or method to further promote Health & Wellness in your life. Choose a topic related to your future career, field of study, personal interest or something you just want to learn more about. There are two ways to choose your topic.

Choose a method, strategy, technique or activity to reduce, manage or eliminate stress.

Examples include, but are not limited to: Nutrition, meditation, physical activity,

art therapy, journal writing, anger management, support groups, pets, yoga, or music.

B. Your research paper needs to support the strategy, technique, skill, activity, method or theory that would be beneficial for Health & Wellness.

1.  Prepare a 3-5 page, typed, 12-point font, double-spaced, MLA or APA reference style summary of your research, including a reference page.

2.  Your references should be recent, research articles or book chapters, from professional and reliable sources. Your references must be more recent than the year 2004.

3.  All your sources must be referenced MLA or APA style (author, year, title, journal, volume, pages). For example: Taylor, S. E., Klein, L.C., Lewis, B. P. Gruenwald, T. L., Gurung, R. A. R., & Updegraff, J. A. (2000) Biobehaviroral responses to stress in females; Tend-and befriend, not fight-or-flight. Psychological Review, 107, 411-429.

4.  You need a minimum of 3 recent reliable references demonstrating how to increase health & wellness, reduce stress, etc..
