“Writing in 1782, J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur tried to define “the American, this new man.” He was, Crevecoeur argued, “neither a European nor a descendant of a European” but an “American, who, leaving behind all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds.” Crevecoeur presumed that America was a melting pot, that the environment created a homogeneous American culture, with similar values, beliefs, and social practices” (Kulikoff, 1991, p. 197).

I hope you enjoy interacting with the unique history of two of these sections of the colonies. We have our ways of defining the sections of our country today, like South or Northeast, or West or mid-West, etc. These were the general ways they referred to the areas that comprised the British colonies.

While there are general reasons people came to the colonies from Europe, there were more particular reasons for each section they desired to emigrate to, as you’ll see.

Remember to interact with the text and lesson in your responses, as well as any other authoritative sources. By ‘authoritative’, I mean sources written by experts in the discipline.

And just to review the discussion board requirements:

Professor’s comment: We know that many of the colonist came over in a state of being indentured servants. A curious practice. For a period of years, perhaps three to seven, another could own your labor. Today, we have internships and apprenticeships, some paid, some not, but these are set up to be win-win relationships. Well, the indentured servant did earn something: his passage over, and he was given some room and board for that time.

By the way, this was not only men. Women and even children could enter a contract to serve a term of four to seven years in return for passage from Europe to the British Colonies, then room and board. During this contract, a servant could not enter a marriage, unless allowed by the owner. At the end of the contract, the owner paid “freedom dues,” which was usually some food, tools and clothes. Sometimes the servant would be given a plot of land, as part of the contract. They could not leave you with nothing (Indentured Servants, 2015).

These binding contracts could be inherited or sold! So an indentured servant might go from a nice overseer to a terrible one, which he/she had never anticipated. If a servant ran away and was caught, increased time would be added to the contract as punishment (Indentured Servants, 2015).

So it seems that selling oneself into indentured service involved some risk. Persons would not logically pursue this path unless their present circumstances were pretty awful, one would assume.

Purpose

The concepts of epidemiology provide the framework for the study of infectious and chronic health issues/diseases, which provides a rich source of data for the analysis of trends in disease and health. This assignment will offer the opportunity to explore the population health effects associated with falls.  You will identify populations at risk for falls, for instance those with co-morbidities or the frail living at home, and design a population focused educational intervention for your target population.  In addition, you will look at what outcomes will be addressed to determine if your interventions are effective.  This paper should integrate HP2020 and CDC information into your paper.

Activity Learning Outcomes

Through this assignment, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Identify appropriate outcome measures and study designs applicable to epidemiological subfields such as infectious disease, chronic disease, environmental exposures, reproductive health, and genetics. (CO3)

2. Identify important sources of epidemiological data. (CO6)

 

Students are expected to submit assignments by the time they are due. Assignments submitted after the due date and time will receive a deduction of 10% of the total points possible for that assignment for each day the assignment is late. Assignments will be accepted, with penalty as described, up to a maximum of three days late, after which point a zero will be recorded for the assignment. Quizzes and discussions are not considered assignments and are not part of the late assignment policy.

Requirements

1. Research Topic: Falls

2. Identify your target population (for instance, age or other demographic, aggregate population); this must be in your city or state ( FLORIDA ).

3. Discuss population-based health education interventions for your target population that is aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality for the problem. Be sure to review the research literature and HP2020 for interventions.

4. Identify how and what data for interventions is being tracked.

5. In a three (3) page paper, address the following. Refer to rubric for expanded details related to grading expectations.

· Identify the problem in the introduction section.

· Provide an overview of the problem in your state (FLORIDA)/national.

· Review of descriptive epidemiologic and demographic data on mortality/morbidity and risk.

· HP2020:  Present the goal, overview and objectives of Healthy People 2020 for the paper topic.

· Population level prevention and health promotion review. Describe population focused interventions. Use of scholarly literature and HP2020 is required.  There should be direct correlation to evidence for all strategies.

3. Make sure all elements on the grading rubric are included.  Organize the paper using the rubric sections and appropriate headings to match the sections.

5. Title page, running head, body of paper, and reference page must follow APA guidelines as found in the 6th edition of the manual. This includes the use of headings for each section of the paper except for the introduction where no heading is used.

6. Ideas and information that come from scholarly literature must be cited and referenced correctly.

7. A minimum of three (3) scholarly literature references must be used.  Not all references should be from scholarly web sites.  You may use your textbook, but this will not count towards the three (3) scholarly literature references.

8. Length:  Papers not adhering to the page length may be returned to you for editing to meet the length guidelines.

9. Adhere to the Chamberlain College of Nursing academic policy on integrity as it pertains to the submission of your own original work for assignments.

Signature Assignment Part I: Health Issue Annotated Bibliography (Individual Submission)

An annotated bibliography requires you to find a source of evidence-based information (journal article, book or public health document) and write a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph (annotation).  Upon identification of your team health issue or topic, each team member will INDIVIDUALLY be responsible for development of three annotations.

This assignment works much like a puzzle in that your team gathers the puzzle pieces and then, through group communication, you discuss how those pieces fit together to reveal the whole picture, or in this case, how an evaluation of the information and your own opinions frame an evidence-based recommended course of action related to your health topic. As you develop your proposed course of action (solutions) you will need to include how social determinants of health affect this issue and include your proposals for solution.

The intent is to inform and highlight one particular topic, such as area of a health disparity, or other issue pertaining to population health. As you conduct your research, think about how social determinants of health affect this issue and what might be your proposals for solution.  (You will revisit these considerations later in the semester during the “Rebounding in Life” learning activities.)

This assignment requires that you apply your intellectual skills: concise description of the material as it relates to your health issue, succinct analysis, and informed library research.  (Core Objectives: Critical Thinking, Communication, Empirical and Quantitative, and Teamwork Skills.)

In public health, the questions asked often include the following aspects:

  • WHAT is the health issue or topic? (i.e., condition or disease or issue)
  • WHY is it important?
  • WHO does the health issue affect? People/population/problem (What are the characteristics of the population?
  • Comparisons (What is the alternative to the intervention?  How is this health issue addressed?  What measures are in place to PREVENT worsening of the health issue?)
  • Outcomes (What are the relevant outcomes of this health issue? i.e., morbidity, death, complications)
  • HOW will your proposed solution make a difference?

Assignment Instructions

  1. Select a Topic: As a team, choose a public health issue or topic, see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) List of Diseases and Conditions for a list of topics: https://www.cdc.gov/DiseasesConditions/ (Links to an external site.)
  2. Assess Sources: Begin the process of gathering your sources by first searching for your topic in Google Scholar or using databases available through the UTA Libraries such as PubMed.   Locate and record citations to articles, books and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic.  Briefly examine and review the actual items, selecting your final sources.  Then read the article and summarize the author’s main points. Be sure you pay special attention to how this particular source fits into the larger, ongoing public health conversation about the topic.  Conduct a brief search on the author to determine his/her expertise, reputation, and credibility.  Look at citations, articles, and books by this author to find information about who the author is, what his/her credentials are, and what occupation or position he/she holds. Similar to your author search, examine the publication or source to determine the publication’s reputation, credibility and target reader/researcher.  Is the text specialized or general?  Is the target audience clinicians (i.e., physicians, research scientists) or another audience such as public health professionals, university students or persons in the community? (Core Objectives: Critical Thinking, Communication, Empirical and Quantitative, and Teamwork Skills.
  3. Develop Three Written Annotations: Now that you have reviewed your sources, choosing three that are relevant to your health issue or topic, you will individually write three annotations that are between 150-200 words, summarizing the central theme and scope of the article.  The annotation must be written in APA style.  A sample annotated bibliography is shown below.
  4. Submit the Assignment: When your annotations are complete (and you have proofread for errors and checked your plagiarism index!), post the annotations to the assignment portal by the due date listed in the course calendar. Each group member must upload their own three annotations.
