For this week’s assignment, you will be considering how news media coverage affects public perceptions of issues in the news. You will be selecting a current event in the news and you will read three news articles related to the same event: One from the United States and two from other countries that also reported on the same event. 

The presentation should include the following:

• Identification of the current event chosen along with identification of the three news articles.  
• Include the full APA citation for each article, including the date it was published and the country it was reported in, and a URL/web link to each source.
• Include screenshots of the first page of each article in your presentation.
• Compare the similarities and differences between the articles in the facts, perspectives of the reporter (tone, opinions shared, etc.).  Consider the way images were used in the article or whether you can detect the reporter’s bias/position in relation to the issue.
• Discuss your perceptions of the current event before and after reading the news articles.  Did your opinion or perception of the event/issue change after reading three articles about it?

In the presentation:

• Provide speaker’s notes or a voice over on the PowerPoint to accompany each slide.  If you choose speaker’s notes, the total word count of your notes should be 1000-1200 words. 
• Include a title slide and include your references page in APA format on the last slide of the presentation.

Submit:

• A 10-12 slide PowerPoint presentation or Prezi that answers the questions posed above. Include speaker notes or a voice-over, images, and videos where applicable.  

Tips on locating articles to use for this assignment:

Choose a current event or issue that you are familiar with in the news today. 

• First: Go to an American news source (such as CNN) and find an article related to the event/issue. 
• Second: Consider what two countries’ news you should look for the issue in. It’s best to select countries that have a social or political interest in the story, countries that are nearby geographically to the news issue, or even countries that are close allies of the country the story relates to. 
• Third: Locate an English language news source for each country by searching online for “English Language news in [country name]”. 

For example:  If you chose a story related to North Korea’s attempts to test nuclear bombs, you might choose China (North Korea’s main ally) and South Korea (North Korea’s main enemy) as two additional countries to read about the event in.

• Fourth: Once you locate an English language news source for that country, locate an article on the same current event and/or global issue.  It’s a good idea to choose an article with a publication date close to your American article to be sure that the same event is being discussed.
• Fifth:  Repeat the previous step for your third article.

After you complete the video and assume the identity of each of the characters, you are to answer the six (6) questions below in a 3 to 5-page paper excluding the Title and Reference Pages. Please use the template provided. Paper must be in third-person point of view except for Question #5 

 Please focus on the content and concepts of the questions below. It is not necessary to discuss each of the characters in detail. What is important is to think critically about how their actions overall contributed to the outcome of the patients discussed in the video. Identify a nursing EBP or Research resource found by searching the internet. This article should be applicable to informatics (telehealth, EMR, Smart Cards, any other topic). Summarize the research article and findings. Is this a practice issue that is evidence-based and should be analyzed using PICO? Is this a non-clinical or research-based topic that should be evaluated using levels of research? Provide an overview of PICO or Levels of Research (whichever is appropriate for your article) and explain why they are used. Health Communication Planning

1) Meet Bonnie, a new mother*

• A 25-year-old mother of a newborn baby girl
• American, college education, still not very familiar with medical issues/ terminology
• Thrilled about her child but quite fearful

o Everything is so new!

• Has read about benefits of immunization; still, too young to remember the devastating

effects of polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases

o Doesn’t know anyone who suffered from them

o Yet, rates of a few vaccine-preventable diseases (e.g., pertussis) are on the rise,

posing an increased risk for infants and children

• Worried about conflicting information on immunization risk/adverse events

o Unable to evaluate the quality/credibility of different information sources

o She does not have a great grasp of health issues but wants to learn more

• Unsure whether she wants to immunize her child; quite confused, some of her friends are not immunizing their children

Based on the above profile re: Bonnie and her peers (U.S. new mothers who are in their 20s):

1. Think of 2-3 examples of potential ways health communication interventions can address such issues/needs among Bonnie and her peers or key influentials/stakeholders. For example, health communication programs can: 1) “Engage Bonnie, her peers, and her community in discussing their perceptions and opinions about the pros and cons of immunizations as well as any barriers, social norms, or other socially determined factors that may influence their decisions; 2) “Encourage peer-to-peer support by establishing venues, events, and social media-based forums where new mothers can discuss immunization and be supported on their decisions; 3) Advocate for policies, mandates, and other regulations that would increase ease of access to timely immunization, convey the importance of immunization in child and community protection, and also be inclusive of vulnerable and underserved populations as it may relate to their specific needs and concerns” (select examples from Schiavo, 2013, Introduction). Please use different examples from the ones listed here or in your textbook.
2. What kinds of research questions would you like to explore to complement the information provided in this case study? What would you ask/would like to find out to complete a potential situation and audience analysis? Please focus only on your two (2) top research questions.
3. Use the definition/examples of “overall program goal” and “outcome objectives” discussed in your book to develop a preliminary program goal and outcome objectives for a potential health communication program that seeks to engage (a) Bonnie and her peers (US parents in the same age group and with similar profile) and (b) one potential key stakeholder (e.g. health care providers, grandparents, etc,) whom you think may influence Bonnie’s behavior. For the purpose of this exercise, please develop only two outcome objectives (behavioral only) as intended for Bonnie and her peers, and two outcome objectives (behavioral only) for the stakeholder group. Note that this exercise focuses only on behavioral objectives, which is only one of the 3 kinds of outcome objectives (behavioral, social, and organizational) discussed in your book.

Your paper should be 1- 2 pages, double-spaced, and follow APA 7th edition formatting. You will include the primary NCHEC Area of Responsibility and Competencies you are addressing in this assignment as a separate paragraph. Discuss the areas you are practicing for this assignment and the specific competency(ies) you are utilizing.
