1- Sickle cell disease is an adaptive response against malaria. Through evolution, this adaptation is part of the genetic disease called sickle cell disease. This genetic adaptation occurred in African people in countries that neighbor large bodies of water. Malaria is transmitted by the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. People with sickle cell disease rarely get infected with, plasmodium falciparum,  the parasite that causes malaria. 

Describe  why such an adaptation occurred? Discuss this question to help strengthen your knowledge of disorders of erythrocytes. Explain why people who no longer live in parts of the world where malaria is prevalent still develop the disease?
