Discussion: Gender, Culture, and Sexuality

Sexual behavior is a highly controversial topic. Different cultural groups have varying beliefs on the appropriateness and morality of various sexual behaviors, when these behaviors should occur and with whom, the age at which sexual behavior should occur, and so forth. Sexual behavior is a common topic in religion, politics, and education, and is also based on cultural and religious belief systems where accepting differences in others’ sexual behavior is typically difficult, if not impossible, for some.

Not only are there differing religious and cultural views on sexuality but there are different views and perceptions on gender-related aspects of sexuality within almost all religious and cultural groups. For example, in some cultures, prepubescent, same-sex experimentation is expected and encouraged prior to adulthood, whereas this behavior is perceived as abnormal and condemned in most Western societies. In some cultures, women are perceived as having a much lower sex drive than men and older adults may be perceived as having no sex drive at all. As with any perception, when society acts on an assumption, people are impacted. As a simple example, if you assume that older adults do not have sex and construct barriers for sexual activity in assisted living facilities, the mental well-being of the residents in that facility may be affected. Understanding the differences in sexuality in different cultural groups is an important aspect of understanding the whole person.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review Chapter 10 in the course text, Gender: Psychological Perspectives. Focus on what the various studies and assessment results say about gender differences related to sexuality.
  • Select a culture that is not your own. Remember that culture includes age, religion, sexual orientation, etc., as well as race and ethnicity. Find at least one article that describes a gender-related aspect of sexuality in this culture and compare it to your own culture. That is, think about what is similar and what is different between this culture and your own when considering gender differences and sexuality.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 3

Post a brief description of the culture you have selected, and briefly describe your own culture. Then, compare (similarities and differences) a gender-related difference in these two cultures related to an aspect of sexuality. What does the research have to say about gender differences related to sexuality? What did you find surprising about the research and why?

Note: Put the cultures you are comparing in the first line of your post. You will be asked to respond to a colleague who compared at least one culture that is different from the ones you did.

  • List three parts of the brain and their function

– The frontal lobes are important for voluntary movement, expressive language and for managing higher level executive functions. Executive functions refer to a collection of cognitive skills including the capacity plan, organize, initiate, self-monitor and control one’s responses in order to achieve a goal.

– The parietal lobe is vital for sensory perception and integration, including the management of taste, hearing, sight, touch, and smell. It is home to the brain’s primary somatic sensory cortex, a region where the brain interprets input from other areas of the body.

– The temporal lobes sit behind the ears and are the second largest lobe. They are most commonly associated with processing auditory information and with the ding encouragement.

  • Discuss the role of the nervous system

– The nervous system is the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. It is the center of all mental activity including thought, learning and memory. Together with the endocrine system, the nervous system is responsible for regulating and maintaining homeostasis.

  • Interaction Between Hormones and the Behavior:

– They are very interesting to me because ever since a baby is born the genders are defined by colors just like gender reveals and how since the baby is a boy they dress him up in blueish colors and girls otherwise with pink. but like with the lecture of the monkeys where they don’t have that influence on them and yet due to the hormones in males or females the male monkeys chose male toys such as balls and trucks meanwhile female monkeys chose female toys such as dolls.

  • Summarize the nature vs nurture debate

From what I gathered from the reading on Lumen.  There is a stronger correlation between genetics, suggesting a stronger leaning towards the “nature” stance in the debate.  However, it is also important to keep in mind that nurture (and/or environment/social expectations) can also have some impact on a person’s decisions making skills and actions.

  • Explain epigenetics

-Epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work. Unlike genetics changes, epigenetic changes are reversible and do not change your DNA sequence, but they can change how your body read a DNA sequence.”

In the Christ & Diwan (2008) article, the authors list seven domains that social workers should address in order to fully assess an older client’s needs. Each domain is considered equally important. This comprehensive evaluation fits well with the social work perspective that it is important to not only address the internal concerns of clients but also their environment. Making decisions for older adults without their input occurs often. In society people sometimes treat their elders like children—making decisions for them based on what they think is best rather than from the client’s perspective. While at times this may be well intentioned, the potential for infantilism and, in turn, compromised self-determination, occurs.

For this Discussion, review the program case study for the Petrakis family. You will focus not on Helen, but on her mother-in-law, Magda. What decisions were made about Magda’s treatment without a formal assessment and/or her input? Consider how Christ & Diwan’s (2008) seven domains relate to Magda’s case. Complete an assessment for Magda and identify the choices that were made without her feedback.

· Post a summary of your assessment of Magda’s situation that addresses the seven domains.

· Fill in the gaps in content as necessary. 

· Describe ways you would have included Magda in the original assessment and treatment plan.

Discussion 2: Elder Abuse

Each year on or around June 15, communities and municipalities around the world plan activities and programs to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day set aside to spread awareness of the abuse of the elderly (Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse & Neglect, 2013). The abuse of older adults is a growing concern and statistics suggest that the number of elders experiencing abuse is an alarmingly high number. Research suggests that close to half the people diagnosed with dementia experience some form of abuse (Cooper, C., Selwood, A., Blanchard, M., Walker, Z., Blizard, R., & Livingston, G., 2009; Wiglesworth, A., Mosqueda, L., Mulnard, R., Liao, S., Gibbs, L., & Fitzgerald, W., 2010, as cited on http://www.ncea.aoa.gov/Library/Data/index.aspx). Elder abuse takes on many forms and can include physical, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. The legendary American actor, Mickey Rooney, spoke to the United States Senate, describing his own experiences of pain and neglect at the hands of his stepson, asking legislators to take seriously the abuse of the elderly.

For this Discussion, find a scholarly article that presents some of the most salient psychosocial issues related to elder abuse.
