When conducting an evaluation, it is also important to consider the client’s demography as a possible contributing factor.

Use the module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research methods of recording case histories.

Create a case history for a person with an addiction that clearly traces contributing factors. Do not include identifying information. At this point, do not include details of any mental illness that would constitute a dual diagnosis. Be sure to cover the following components in your case history:

  • Demographics – including age, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, marital status, number and ages of children, living arrangements, and religion if applicable
  • Family background
  • Education
  • Employment
  • History of chemical use
  • Description of the current problem (include history of previous treatment, if any)

After completing the case history, consider ethical standards in relation to this client. What potential ethical issues exist or may come into play with this client? Be sure to include at least one ethical issue. Explore multiculturalism, duty to report/warn, and confidentiality. For example, if the client has children, explain how duty to report may come into play when working with this client.

Write a 3–4-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

The literature review is an important aspect of research. To determine if there is a problem that needs to be researched, a thorough background on the problem needs to exist.  Once the problem is identified, the researcher needs to decide which theoretical foundation would best be used to advance that theory.  In reviewing the literature on the problem and the theory, it is important for the researcher to look for possible themes or common topics that appear in the literature being reviewed.  Neill (2017) states that the review seeks to synthesize published research findings that relate to the researcher’s topic of interest.  It can expose gaps in the current knowledge base while helping the researcher establish a research question. Identify a question that needs to be investigated to determine what other authors already have discovered and written about the topic. One the articles have been obtained, each one needs to be analyzed to include a critical evaluation and synthesis of the information and not just a summary of what the articles contain.  The literature review provides the foundation for the research by including articles that highlight the importance of the research question. This information in put into a cohesive summary that will eventually become chapter 2 of the dissertation.

Discussion: The Relationship Between Adult Development and Individuation

Many consider early and middle adulthood times of relatively little growth, but adults encounter a multitude of tasks and changes during these phases. For instance, the quality of relationships change, vocational choice might be solidified, formal education might be completed, parenting responsibilities might be present, and changes in physical capacities might set limits on behavior. An adult’s perceived success or failure can influence his/her sense of self and ability to accomplish tasks and navigate changes in early and middle adulthood.

In the United States, individuation is an important aspect of adulthood. Individuation refers to processes by which you become a unique individual with a distinct sense of identity. The process is sometimes identified as separation-individuation (Berger, 2016). Adulthood is the period in which roles change from that of a dependent child to a more autonomous individual with different responsibilities and commitments.

Boucher and Maslach (2009) discuss how the type of culture—individualistic or collectivistic—can influence the degree of individuation. Think about how cultural differences can influence the changes that adults face during early and middle adulthood. The influence of culture on these changes impacts individuation. Consider collectivist societies that value conformity over individuality. How does that impact an individual’s sense of uniqueness?

  • Select one aspect of adulthood (identity development, vocational development, relationships, or parenting).
