To Torture or Not to Torture

Note: In order to fulfill this assignment, you need to have read chapters 5–7, 14 from the Holmes text. If you have not done so, please stop now and read that material.

 

One of the ethical controversies of recent times is the practice of using torture in obtaining information from suspected terrorists or those with knowledge of terrorist activities. Some believe that the current threat of terrorism warrants such drastic means while others believe that torture is never a justifiable manner in handling prisoners of war.

 

Suppose a situation presents itself in which we have strong reasons to believe a major attack on U.S. soil is immanent and that many lives will be put in danger. Security forces have captured a terrorist whom they have very good reasons to believe has vital information that can lead to thwarting this attack. They have tried the usual means of obtaining information from the prisoner and none of them have been successful. His resolve not to talk is quite strong. However, security forces now consider torturing the prisoner and believe with a high degree of probability that his resolve will be broken and he will supply the needed information. Should they torture the prisoner?

Article Critique Outline

Below are the major elements required for the peer-reviewed research article critique assignment and their associated point values.  The critique will be structured to contain the major category headings below including the:

Introduction
Methodology
Data Analysis (called Results in some articles)
Communicating Findings (often called Interpretation in articles).

The above headings should be included in your critique. For example, the first level heading will be entitled Introduction and listed under that heading there should be eight second level headings which are included in the rubric below.
If the article being critiqued is missing an element within one or more of the major categories, you should still address it in your critique.  For example, if your article does not discuss sources of measurement error which may have been present in the study, you should describe them and their potential impact on the study’s results.

A cover page, abstract and reference page are required.  Make sure that you use APA style to create the cover page for your paper and to format the abstract and reference page. Title the paper as “Critique of_______” with the article name in the blank space and without the quotation marks) and include on the cover page an APA formatted running head. Working With Employees: An I/O Commentary on Real World Problems

This required Portfolio assignment will give you experience observing and interacting with people outside of the classroom. It has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to develop skills, synthesize knowledge, and integrate learning in a real world setting. This assignment accomplishes that goal by challenging you to:

 

·         Conduct a 30-minute, semi-structured interview with a manager

·         Identify common challenges and issues that arise in the workplace

·         Evaluate strategies for addressing these challenges

·         Integrate your findings with evidence-based literature from journal articles, textbook, and additional scholarly sources.

 

Objective: This assignment is designed to help you identify common problems that managers face when dealing with employees, and the solutions that managers use in an attempt to solve those problems. This assignment will also give you an opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of the solutions from a practical perspective and from the perspective of research in Industrial/Organizational psychology.

 

Step 1: Identify someone in your community who is a manager. This should be someone who is responsible for recruiting and/or selecting employees, supervising employees, and evaluating employee performance.

 

Step 2: Conduct a 30-minute interview with the manager. In your interview, be sure to cover the following questions:

 

·         What are some of the common problems that you have experienced with employees? Be sure to steer the discussion toward relevant topics such as recruitment, employee selection, employee motivation, employee training, job attitudes, giving feedback, creating incentives, managing conflict, and so forth.

·         Identify two major problems that the manager mentions and ask how he or she has responded to those problems. What solutions has the manager tried? Have the solutions worked?

 

Step 3: Using scholarly sources such as your textbook and professional journal articles that you find in the University Library, research the two problems mentioned by the manager. What does the field of I/O say about these types of problems or issues? What recommendations might you make to the manager?

 

Document your interview and your library research in a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper. Your paper should consist of the following parts:

 

·         An introduction, describing the individual that you interviewed and his/her position

·         A summary of the interview focusing on the two major problems and attempted solutions

·         A scholarly commentary with recommendations from the perspective of I/O psychology

 

Be sure to include at least five scholarly references in your paper. Provide a list your specific interview questions as an Appendix. Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Between 1991 and 1999, the number of children in the United States receiving special education services for autism spectrum disorder rose 500%. The rate has nearly doubled in the past ten years across the country. In 2002, the rate of children with autism spectrum disorder was 1 in every 150 children. Currently, approximately 1 in every 88 children has autism spectrum disorder. This increase is happening not only in the United States; studies have found rates to be rising in Canada and across Europe, as well.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet, research the increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder. Then, respond to the following:

  • Identify and explain at least three possible causes for the increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder.
