Prior to completing this discussion, please read chapter 15 in the textbook, read the Shetgiri et. al (2012) article, review the information from chapter 1 about Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological theory, and review any relevant Instructor Guidance. Utilize Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory to address the topic of motivations for and influences on bullying.

  • Using each of the five systems in Bronfenbrenner’s theory, identify and describe how a child’s environment might pre-dispose him or her to bully.
    • For example, within a person’s microsystem are the parents.  How might parents be an influencing factor on whether or not a child is prone to bullying?
  • Find and report (with proper citation) one current statistic on the factors influencing school bullying behaviors.
    • Does this statistic seem to follow the same trend supported by Bronfenbrenner’s theory?  If not, explain how it challenges the theory.
  • Then, reflect on friendships in childhood and adolescence and address the positive and negative influences that they can have on bullying behaviors.
  • Finally, utilize problem-solving techniques in exploring developmental issues, grounded in child development, in order to provide one unique solution to reduce or completely end bullying.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory (1963) comes to mind when discussing employee work motivation and attitude. Abraham Maslow states that people are driven by different motivations to work. He has displayed the various motivations by using a pyramid. The base of the pyramid is the need for the basics such as safety, food, and shelter. Most people are motivated to go to work based on these basic human needs.

The top of the Maslow’s pyramid is self-actuation. Many people are motivated for recognition or high achievement. Maslow describes self-actualization as a person’s need to be and do that which the person was “born to do.” “A musician must make music, an artist must paint, and a poet must write.” (Simons & Drinnien, 1987).

Between the base of the pyramid and the top of the pyramid are other work motivators. These other motivators are safety, love/belonging, and esteem. Figuring out which work motivator drives the employee’s reason to work may also help with employee attitude. For instance, if an employee’s work motivation is self-actualization, then that employee may be a “workaholic,” or have ambitions to always be in leadership roles.

The same can be said about an employee whose work motivation is at the vary base (food and shelter). These employees may do the bare minimum, but will always look for other job opportunities. By and large, turnover theorists assume that employees’ preference for leaving is based primarily on their job satisfaction, which directly influences their intent to leave. Although liking or not liking one’s job is clearly important, Hom and associates (2012) theorize that an assessment of control as well as an affective assessment of one’s current employment situation must be jointly considered (Li, et al, 2016).

There are many interesting areas in the field of social psychology, so I had to come up with an activity to focus us in on just a handful of the many fascinating concepts related to the social dynamics of human interaction.  I have settled on Attribution theory and the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy.

For your assignment, Iwant you to reflect upon your own experience with attributions and the self-fulfilling prophecy by writing a 1-page narrative demonstrating your understanding of one or both of these concepts, and providing specific examples of both the positive as well as negative effects of our expectations about others, or what they believe about us.  You can discuss how you have developed certain attitudes or beliefs about various groups of people (some might call these stereotypes) which influence how you react to these persons, treat them, etc.  What effect might your treatment of them have on their own attitudes and behavior?  You may also discuss how you have been the recipient of someone else’s attitudes toward you (for good or bad) which has affected you in some way.  The goal is for you to explore the social aspects of human interaction, and reflect upon how our social experiences affect how we feel about ourselves, how we act in social situations, advantages and disadvantages we’ve received as a result, and so on.   You may want to read the short articles I‘ve attached with this assignment and included here:
