Case Study

Section One:

Choose one of the three Case Studies focusing on a family in crisis. Each member of the family has unique issues that you must address. You must also determine the primary problems (this may include diagnostic impressions but not formal diagnoses), intervention, prevention, and education required to assist the family. In your project, do the following:

  • Identify the client and the presenting problem or symptoms. Briefly explain if anyone else is involved and how they contribute to the problem. Explain if anyone other than the “identified client” also could be identified as a client. If so, describe who and why.
  • Briefly describe any underlying problems or potential mental health diagnoses contributing to the primary problem that should be noted as you proceed with the client.
  • Briefly describe the presenting problem from the family’s perspective and what theoretical perspective you will use to assess, analyze, and develop a treatment plan for this case.
  • Identify the unique needs of each individual in the family.
  • Briefly describe the culture of the family, societal expectations, gender roles, and cultural norms. Briefly explain how each of these might contribute to the problem.
  • Briefly explain the child and adolescent culture and at least one general contributing factor to the identified issue and explain how this may or may not impact the family dynamics.
  • Describe one intervention you might use for the identified client that would address the presenting problem and any related psychosocial factors.
  • Justify your intervention with evidence-based research to support the use of the interventions you have identified.
  • Briefly describe one preventative technique that you might use to reduce the likelihood of further crisis or the perpetuation of the current crisis.

Section Two:

Reflect on your journal entries throughout the course and consider what you may have learned about yourself as a future clinician working with children, adolescents, and families. Explain any areas of strength you have identified by completing this course that will assist you in working with children, adolescents, and families.

  • Explain any areas of strength you identified as you worked on this course that will assist you in working with children, adolescents, and families.
  • Explain any areas of knowledge you might want to further develop to become more effective as a clinician working with children, adolescents, and families.
  • Explain any insights you had or conclusions you drew as you worked on this course regarding your interest in becoming a clinician that works with children and adolescents.

Ben case

Case Study of Ben, Part 2

Read the Case Study of Ben, Part 2.

Use the Case Study Response Guide to assist you in revisiting your diagnosis of Ben’s condition, incorporating this new information. In Section 4 of the response guide, address each of the following:

· In each of these scenarios, describe how the new information alters the picture presented in the original case study.

· Describe your new diagnostic hypotheses, and justify your conclusions.

· What further diagnostic evaluation do you believe is warranted?

Use the Case Study Response Guide to format your assignment.

Case Study Response Guide

Use this outline to structure your case assignments.
1. Case Summary
  • Provide a brief summary of what you have      learned about the individual reviewed in the case. Include information about the individual      in terms of demographics and general history, and the sources of that      information, and the reason that the individual was referred, and by      whom.
  • Summarize any information you may have      about evaluations that have been conducted, including the results.
2. Clinical Impression (Diagnosis)

Write the clinical impression in the DSM-5 format:

XXX.xx (Yyy.yy) Primary Diagnoses (list in order of salience).

(DSM-5 Code is first, as in XXX.xx, and ICD-10 codes next, in parentheses.)

OTHER FACTORS:

Use the V and Z codes, or simply appropriate descriptors to psychosocial and contextual factors of importance to the diagnostic case. These replace the DSM-IV-TR Axis IV & V used to address these concerns.

3. Recommendations

Explain any recommendations for interventions, treatment, and/or disposition.

4. Questions

Address the specific questions that were asked in the instructions for this assignment.

Here is a sample assignment question and an appropriate brief response:

Question: Describe what further information you would need to accurately diagnose this case.

Response: To diagnose this case accurately, I would also need to review any pertinent medical records. I would want to interview this client’s mother, with whom he lives, to corroborate the clinical interview data supplied by the client, and to learn more about his developmental history. I would also want to…

Carter Case Analysis

Carter Case Analysis

Identify and discuss the major issues, themes, needs, and challenges faced by multiracial individuals as presented in the readings of this unit and the Carter Case Study you viewed, and relative to what you learned about racial identity development models.

  • Describe how multiracial individuals are similar to and different from other groups; be sure to address identity development.
  • What bio-psycho-social characteristics or concerns stand out to you as salient in this case and why?
  • Imagine that you are the therapist—propose three culturally relevant strategies you would use in helping your client to resolve conflicts and to promote optimal wellness and growth in terms of mind, body, and spirit.

Note: This is a graded discussion question. Your instructor will grade your discussion using the Carter Case Analysis Scoring Guide accessed in the link, and your grade will appear in the courseroom gradebook. You are still responsible for posting two substantial peer responses to other learners’ discussions.

CARTER CASE STUDY

The Carters are a middle class family who live in a predominantly white area. Mrs. Carter is African American, and Mr. Carter is European American. They are concerned as their son James, a junior in high school and honors student, is adopting music, clothing, and behaviors associated with low-SES African-Americans when they have tried to raise him not to identify with those parts of Black culture. In the past month they have experienced conflict with James who has challenged their expectations. They have also noticed that he has smelled of alcohol when returning home from spending the evening at friend’s house, and just this week they received a call from one of James’ teachers reporting he may fail a class.

Assignment 2: Discussion Question: Culture Shock

Discussion Question

This week’s study notes and your textbook emphasized the importance of understanding multiculturalism in effective interviewing.  We often take for granted our own assumptions, values, and ways of perceiving the world until we encounter people from another culture. Recall a time when you experienced “culture shock” by traveling to another part of the world or by interacting with someone from another culture and were surprised by some of your own assumptions. If you have not interacted with people from different cultures, think about a book or film in which you became aware of your own assumptions and discovered that they were not universal. If you are having trouble, consider renting the movies Slumdog Millionaire, The House of Sand and Fog, Mi Familia, or Double Happiness.

For this discussion assignment:

  1. Identify and explain an example of “culture shock” either from your own experience or from a movie or book.
  2. Explain how your personal assumptions were challenged.
  3. Discuss what you learned about your own beliefs and if your beliefs were changed in any way.
  4. As appropriate, cite the online course, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.
  5. Apply APA standards for writing and citations to your work.

Week 10 Assignment

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. One of the references must come from Sue, D. W., & Sue, D. (2016). You are expected to include at least one scholarly and peer-reviewed resource outside of those provided in the readings for each discussion post. I need this completed by 05/05/18 at 5pm. You can chose option A or option B but please support your paper with several references including the book.

Application Assignment: Virtual Field ExperienceTM

Option A:

This Virtual Field Experience TM (VFE®) Assignment is designed to promote your understanding of the use of affirmative therapy with a client who is questioning her sexual orientation. You observe a simulated counseling session and then listen to a professional dialogue about what took place; this is considered a reflected practice and explains some of the reasoning behind the counselor’s actions. The VFE® also demonstrates the power of reflective practice, or the power of reflecting on what one says and does during a counseling session.

For this Assignment, read the Pachankis article on affirmative therapy. Review the APA guidelines for working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) clients in counseling. Then, review the VFE® course media Affirmative Therapy. Take detailed notes on the competencies outlined in the APA guidelines.

The Assignment:

In a 3- to 4-page paper, write a summary of the VFE® session, noting the competencies and practices that were effectively demonstrated by the counselor. Use the Learning Resources, APA guidelines, and the Pachankis article on affirmative therapy to support your summation. Include the following:

· Explain how the counselor effectively applied at least three competencies outlined in the APA guidelines and the article. Provide examples.

· With regard to each competency you selected, share insights that you gained about the application of this competency from the dialogue between the two counselors (in other words, that you did not gain from observation of the session alone).

· Explain how the counselor demonstrated effective cultural competency, providing examples to support your response.

· Based on your current level of knowledge and skill, suggest one recommendation you might make to the counselor to improve his or her effectiveness.

Support your Application Assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation.

-OR-

Option B:

This Virtual Field Experience TM Assignment is designed to promote your understanding of the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy with an ethnic minority client who is experiencing marital distress. You observe a simulated counseling session and then listen in on a professional dialogue about what took place during the session and some of the reasoning behind the counselor’s actions. The VFE® also demonstrates the power of reflective practice, or the power of reflecting on what one says and does during a counseling session.

For this Assignment, read Hays’s article on cognitive-behavior therapy. Then review the AMCD Multicultural Counseling Competencies. Finally, review the VFE® course media Adaptation of CBT. Look for and make notes of examples from the guidelines and the article that are illustrated or depicted during the session.

The Assignment:

In a 3- to 4-page paper, write a summary of the VFE® session, noting the competencies and practices that were effectively demonstrated by the counselor. Include the following:

· Explain how the counselor effectively applied at least three competencies outlined in the AMCD guidelines and article.

Who Am I: Part 1 (35 points)

This unit covers theories of personality, so your task is to go on a quest for knowledge about your own unique personality. This assignment will be divided in to two parts, each is worth 35 points.

Introduction

“Who AM I?” may be more of a loaded question than you originally thought. Understanding who we are is a lifelong developmental process requiring an analysis of our thoughts, feelings, values, attitudes and experiences. Who we are, or our Self Concept, changes as we gain new insight into our experiences. Basically, Self Concept can be defined as how you think and feel about yourself and encompasses your Self Image and Self Esteem. Discovering who we are takes a conscious effort to explore how we perceive ourselves and how we relate to others in the world around us.

To gain a better understanding of your Self Concept and answer the question of “Who Am I” it is important that you examine your personality. An analysis of your thoughts and feelings about yourself and the world around you can assist you in this process. Through part one of this assignment, you will complete a series of assessment instruments designed to provide you with some insight/feedback into your Self Concept and Personality. Then you will be asked to write a brief reflection piece on your process. Part two of this assignment will be your completion of your own Johari Window (See Who Am I: Part 2).

Your first step in answering “Who Am I” is to complete the following free online assessments.  These assessments are designed to give you insight into your self concept and your personality.

Required Assessments

The First Required Assessment: examines your Self Esteem. To access the assessment, click the link below and follow the directions given. Once you complete the Self Esteem assessment, remember to record the results given.

http://www.queendom.com/tests/access_page/index.htm?idRegTest=3105

The Second Required Assessment: Now it is time to look at your personality. The first assessment to complete will examine your Temperament through the completion of the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II. After completing this assessment you will be characterized as an Artisan, Guardian, Rational or Idealist. Record your results and the subsequent description that follows. Click the link below to begin the assessment:

Keirsey Temperament Sorter II

NEED MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR TEMPERAMENT? Click on the link below for a more detailed explanation of your Keirsey Temperament. Remember to complete the Keirsey Temperament Sorter II to obtain your temperament before clicking this link.

Keirsey Temperament Descriptions

The Third Required Assessment: The third required assessment is based on C. G. Jung’s concept of personality types. The answers you will receive from this assessment are similar to those rendered by the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator® (MBTI) or other Jungian personality tests. There are two steps to completing this assessment:

Step One

Click on the link below and answer the questions as directed. Once completed you will be given a four letter “type” Record the four letter type and go on to step two.

MBTI Personality Assessment

Step Two

Now that you have your four letter type, the next step is to understand what this type says about who you are. Click on the link below and you will enter a site that outlines a description of every available type. Locate your type on the site and click it and you will be presented with its detailed description.

MBTI Personality Types

The Fourth Required Assessment: This assessment is based on the five-factor model or otherwise known as the Big Five (see page 461 of your text). Again, there are two steps to completing this assessment:

Step One

Click on the link below and answer the questions as directed. Make certain that you record your results and information provided at the end of the test.

Big Five One

Step Two

Click on the link below and answer the questions as directed. Once again, record your results and information provided at the end of the test.

Big Five Two

Additional Required Assessments: Once you have completed the above you should have some insight into your personality and your Self Concept. With this understanding it is time for you to think about other components of your personality that you would like to examine. The following is a list of resources that can give you additional information about yourself. Choose AT LEAST THREE of the assessments listed below to complete. Choose ones that you feel will contribute to your understanding of “Who Am I” and are of most interest to you. Feel free to complete more than three of the following since these are short assessments providing only basic information.

Procrastination Test Self-Disclosure
Assertiveness Communication Skills Anxiety Test
Listening Skills Self Monitoring

Required Reflection Paper:

Now that you have taken all of the assessments, it is time to discuss your thoughts about these types of assessment tools. Write a short (1 to 3 pages) response about your experience. This is NOT the time to answer the “WHO AM I” question – that is what part 2 is for. Your goal in this paper is to discuss the process of taking the tests. Following is a list of questions/ideas to get you started:

Did you enjoy taking these tests? Why or why not?

Do you feel as though your results accurately described you? Why or why not?

Do you feel as though these tests were helpful in gaining a better understanding of your personality?

Do you believe that online tests like these are reliable? Think about the two Big Five tests, were your scores consistent across both tests?

Do you believe that these tests are valid? Think about some of the questions asked, did they appear to be measuring what the test was for? (This is a type of validity known as face validity)

Feel free to discuss anything else that comes to mind regarding your experience.

Who Am I: Part 2 (35 Points)

Introduction:

This is part two of the Who Am I assignment. Part one’s purpose was to gain information about your Self Concept and personality. Now you are going to visually represent who you are and how others see you. You will do this by creating your own Johari Window in power point.

Step One

Share your results from all of your assessments with a significant other or family member. Record any informative or interesting feedback that they offer you. This will be important in your completion of your power point.

Step Two

What in the world is a Johari Window? Go to the following links and learn about the Johari Window, so that you will have a better understanding of how to organize your power point.

Johari Window,

Johari Window, more information,

Johari Window Test

Johari Window “Types”

Self Disclosure and the Johari Window

Step Three

Create your Johari Window in a PowerPoint presentation. You will not be making an actual “window” as represented in the Johari Window diagram. You will be using the Johari Window principles in your presentation. You will complete your presentation based on all of the information that you gathered from taking the assessments in part one, and from your feedback in step one above.

*Note: You do not have to disclose anything that is too personal to you. It is your decision as to what information from your journey of self-discovery you wish to share.

Your PowerPoint must include the following: (Minimum of 10 Slides)

· A title slide with your name and title

· At least two slides representing your “Open” quadrant

· At least two slides representing your “Blind” quadrant

· At least two slides representing your “Hidden” quadrant

· At least two slides representing your “Unknown” quadrant

· A conclusion slide

Optional:

· You may use any design and color that you choose

· You may be as creative as you like – feel free to use pictures, diagrams, etc

Here are some additional links to Johari Window sites and tests:

A Google search that yields lots of links.

Professor’s Question 5 points added  (3)

Theoritical Issues in Psychology, or Is Pluto a Planet?

Both Psychoanalytic and Behavioral Theories of Personality have been referred to as “mechanistic”. That is human beings are machines that are controlled by powerful internal and external forces (e.g., Id, or reinforcement). On the other hand, Roger’s “self actualization” theory seems to be a contradiction of the basic mechanistic theoretical tenants.

Question: How could Bandura’s theory of Reciprocal Determination be viewed as a “grand theory” which accommodates both of the seemingly opposite views of Psychoanalytical and Behavioral theories?

Extra Credit sentence: How does the above discussion come to bare on “Trait” Theories?
