After reading your classmates’ threads, choose one to which you will  respond, then write a reply that interacts with your classmate’s thread  and presents a well-reasoned alternative to his or her approach to the  issue. You do not have to defend a position that is diametrically  opposed to your classmate’s position, but you do need to either defend a  position that is significantly different than his/hers or defend the  same position in a very different way. If possible, you must reply to a  classmate to whom no one else has yet replied. Treat your classmate’s  opinion with sensitivity and respect.

Your reply must be 500–600 words. You will be penalized for falling  short or exceeding the word count. Any quotes or information used from  sources other than yourself (including your classmate’s thread) must be  cited using footnotes in current Turabian format and will not count  towards the total word count.

Psychosocial Theory and Role Theory

Social work takes a holistic view to social problems, arguing that they are complex and multilayered, often contributed to by a number of individual, psychological, and social processes. Consequently, psychosocial theory is a theoretical lens that has been employed in social work to apply to an array of problems and populations. It also emphasizes respecting diversity factors and the strengths that individuals, families, and communities bring to the change process.

When attempting to understand the presenting problems of individuals, families, and/or organizations, it is also important to take into account the social roles they take on. As the name implies, role theoryas a theoretical lens focuses on the roles assumed by individuals. The theory maintains that people’s behaviors are influenced by their role and the inherent expectations, norms, and power that underlie those social roles.

This week, you will put on two new theoretical lenses—psychosocial theory and role theory. You will examine how problems are conceptualized through the world of psychological and social processes as well as social roles.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Analyze unique psychosocial factors that are distinct to diverse population groups
  • Apply psychosocial theory and role theory to a social work case study
  • Evaluate the strengths and limitations of psychosocial theory and role theory

Discussion: Psychosocial Theory and Diverse Groups

There will be times when a social worker is presented with a case where they are not familiar with the surrounding psychosocial issues. Because social workers are on a continual journey in learning, it is important to read pertinent literature. This Discussion provides an opportunity to visit Walden Library and strengthen your skills in identifying and locating an empirical research article.

To prepare:

  • Select one of these three groups: (1) an immigrant individual from a racial or ethnic minority group, (2) a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) individual, OR (3) an individual who is physically disabled.
  • Review the Walden Library resources listed in the Learning Resources.
  • Then conduct a library search for an empirical study focused on one of the groups above and the unique psychosocial factors or issues a social worker should be aware of when working with that group.
By Day 3

Post:

  • Post the APA-style reference for the article you found in the library.
  • Describe four specific psychosocial factors that should be taken into account in order to understand the psychosocial context when working with the group you selected. (Two of these factors should be psychologically related and two of these factors should be socially related).
  • Identify and explain a psychosocial intervention that addresses one of the four specific psychosocial factors you described above.
  • Identify 1 to 2 outcomes you might measure if you were to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.
  • Evaluate one advantage of using a psychosocial framework in social work practice with the group you chose.
By Day 5

Respond to two colleagues:

  • Evaluate the disadvantages of using a psychosocial framework in social work practice with the group your colleague chose.

Assignment: Application of Role Theory to a Case Study

This week, you will use role theory to apply to your chosen case study. In other words, your theoretical orientation—or lens—is role theory as you analyze the case study.

Use the same case study that you chose in Week 2. (Remember, you will be using this same case study throughout the entire course). Use the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory, and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.

To prepare:

  • Review and focus on the same case study that you used in Week 2.
  • Review the websites and guides for developing PowerPoint skills found in the Learning Resources.
  • Record presentation using PersonalSpace.
By Day 7

Submit a narrated PowerPoint presentation using Kaltura Media that includes 11 to 12 slides.

  • Each slide should be written using bullet points, meaning no long paragraphs of written text should be in the slides.
  • Include a brief narration of less than 30 seconds for each slide (i.e., the narration takes the place of any written paragraphs, while the bullet points provide context and cues for the audience to follow along).

Your presentation should address the following:

  • Identify the presenting problem for the case study you selected. (Remember the presenting problem has to be framed from the perspective of role theory. For example, the presenting problem can be framed within the context of role functioning).
  • Identify all the relevant roles assumed by the client.
  • Analyze the social expectations and social and cultural norms revolving around the role, social position, and role scripts of one of the roles assumed by the client.
  • Explain the role and social position of the social worker in working with the client in the case study.
  • Describe how the role(s) and social position(s) assumed by the social worker will influence the relationship between the social worker and the client.
  • Identify three assessment questions that are guided by role theory that you will ask the client to better understand the problem.
  • Identify and describe two interventions that are aligned with the presenting problem and role theory.
  • Identify one outcome that you would measure if you were to evaluate one of the interventions you would implement to determine if the intervention is effective.
  • Evaluate one advantage and one limitation in using role theory in understanding the case.

Be sure to:

  • Identify and correctly reference the case study you have chosen.
  • Use literature to support your claims.
  • Use APA formatting and style.
  • Include the reference list on the last slide.

Shelly Cohen RE: Discussion – Week 4COLLAPSE

Hello Class,

I selected Latino immigrant children to conduct a library search for an empirical study focused on the unique psychosocial factors or issues a social worker should be aware of when working with that group.

Four specific psychosocial factors that should be taken into account in order to understand the psychosocial context when working with Latino children are:  Psychologically related—1. “Large numbers of refugee children arriving in high-income countries[, i.e., the United States,]…have mental health needs [such as PTSD] that are higher than for the general population and that these are exacerbated by the numbers of traumatic events they have experienced and the post-migration stressors they continue to be exposed to” (Fazel, 2018); 2. Adapting to a new culture is an issue because “[children] struggle with finding their place as they bridge the gap between values and traditions of their home country and those of their new country, the United States; Socially related—3. Residence instability is problematic, particularly for the undocumented seeking asylum, as “[c]urrent political and economic instability in Latin America has led to a significant displacement of citizens (approximately 5 million, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre), both within and outside of their countries of origin”; and, 4. Family stressors such as discrimination and illness, etc. (Aparicio, Pecukonis, & Zhou, 2014).

A psychosocial intervention that addresses one of the four specific psychosocial factors described above is the trauma systems therapy approach.  “The trauma systems therapy approach developed by Saxe, Ellis and Kaplow (2007) is a collaborative, multisystem approach to treat traumatized children within their communities” (Robinson & Kaplan, 2011).Hello Class,

Outcomes I might measure if I were to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions are Latino immigrant children stable with permanent shelter, enrolled and receiving services in school, e.g., ESL, individual/group/family counseling, free breakfast and lunch, etc., health evaluations and treatments by local clinicians, clothes and household supplies from community organizations and churches, and government and privately-funded sources for food security.

One advantage of using a psychosocial framework in social work practice with Latino immigrant children are the ability “to intervene [on their behalf] within multiple social systems, using multiple modalities of treatment and a blend of treatment techniques” (Robinson & Kaplan, 2011).  According to Fazel (2018), refugee children have many needs to be addressed that might present within both their mental and physical health as well as their broader systems, be that in their family, school or the wider community.

One psychosocial behavior may be hostility in the gay and lesbian population.  One could see themselves in a role that they feel defines them, or that they must constantly define for others.  They could look inwardly for strength and outwardly give the impression that they are content with their life as they are treated.  Living with two daughters that identify as bisexual, we have been exposed to and have tried to help in the hostility they may feel mostly towards other girls that they have expressed interest in, and they find out that their parents are not accepting of their sexuality.  It saddens me, and I try to be there for both of them when they have questions, and hope they do not grow up with hostility.

Another is social conformity.  When I was a child, I knew I liked boys, but had never given a thought about same sex couples.  We went to Pride two weeks ago in Pittsburgh, and it was wonderful to feel the love and simple happiness of not being afraid to express one’s self (despite the church group that preached against homosexuality) but in my work in Atlanta, I met a wonderful woman who has a wife, and she sadly explained they lived in a small town.  She said she was afraid of holding hands in public with her partner.  I know that this is a very sensitive psychosocial topic that needs to be worked upon to achieve epiphany for some that are hesitant to accept their family or friends.

Yet another is a mental illness that they may have.  Certainly this must be looked at and tended to by a doctor, and with our piecemeal system of care, it could be difficult or even dangerous to find care in one’s city.  There could be fear of retribution from the doctor, even though they’ve taken an oath.

Finally pain can most definitely be another factor.  With the fear of pain diagnosis ripe on the minds of everyone for fear of addiction, many types of pain management might not be considered including medical marijuana and CBD oil can and should be explored.  Right now there is a fear of retribution that should be taken into consideration in order to treat the patient.

I think as simple as it sounds, talk therapy is a wonderful resource and should be used to it’s fullest.  There is something to be said for ‘verbally vomiting’ on someone else who is paid to listen.  It is easy, and can be measured by a scale (1-10) or a pre treatment questionnaire and post treatment questionnaire.

For the book essay for The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down please pick 1 question from Group 1 and one question from Group 2 to answer. Provide at least 2-3 page answers for each. Be sure to cite the book and course materials in each answer. Please use 1 inch margins, 12pt Times New Roman, Double-spaced.

Group 1

1. The only American who fully won the Lees’ trust was Jeanine Hilt, their social worker. Why did Jeanine succeed where so many others had failed?

2. Neil Ernst says, “I felt it was important for these Hmongs to understand that there were certain elements of medicine that we understood better than they did and that there were certain rules they had to follow with their kids’ lives.” Why didn’t this message get through to the Lees? If you were Neil, would you feel this way too? Is this an ethnocentric attitude? Why or why not?

3. In Chapter Eight, after describing Foua’s competence as a mother and farmer in Laos, Fadiman quotes her as saying, “I miss having something that really belongs to me.” What has Foua lost? Is there anything that still “really belongs” to her? Are there other groups we have discussed that have experience similar loss?

4. In her preface, the author says that while she was working on this book, she often asked herself two questions: “What is a good doctor?” “What is a good parent?” How do you think she might have answered her own questions? How would you answer them? How is each identity constructed by each group. Which social construction is taken more seriously in the United States? Why?

5. What was the “role loss” many adult Hmong faced when they came to the United States? What is the underlying root cause? How does this loss affect their adjustment to America?

Group 2

1. How do you think the issues raised by this book should affect your education at Purdue and/or your life as a citizen today?

2. What relevance does this book have to your potential career (i.e., medicine, health, law, social work, politics, religion, communications, education, linguistics)? In the context of your future career, how do you think you would handle similar situations, if faced with them?

Week 7: Feminist Theory and Empowerment Theory

Social workers often confront issues pertaining to marginalization, social inequality and inequities, disparities, discrimination, and deprivation of human rights with individuals, groups, and communities. Theories that directly address these issues include, but are not limited to, feminist theory and empowerment theory. The underlying values of these theories emphasize reducing the hierarchy or power differentials between groups (for example, between client and social worker or between residents and those who hold power in a community).

Oppression can occur within certain groups that have traditionally been marginalized. These groups might include women; racial minorities; those from low socioeconomic brackets; religious groups; and gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals. Feminist theory and empowerment theories outline principles, skills, behaviors, and interventions for social workers to engage social action that promotes empowerment, equality, and inclusion.

This week, you explore how feminist theory and empowerment theory are applicable in social work practice.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Summarize the major assumptions of feminist and empowerment theories
  • Relate the underlying principles and values of feminist and empowerment theories to the core values and ethical principles of the NASW Code of Ethics
  • Apply feminist and empowerment theories to social work practice
  • Evaluate the strengths and limitations of feminist and empowerment theories for social work practice

Discussion: Values Underlying Theory and the NASW Code of Ethics

Every profession has a code of ethics that guides professional behavior. In social work, the NASW Code of Ethics guides the behavior and decision-making practices of social workers. It is important that the theories social workers select in working with clients align, or are consistent, with the values and ethical principles identified in the NASW Code of Ethics.

In this Discussion, you align ethics and theory in relation to practice.

To prepare: Review the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics listed in the Learning Resources.

By Day 3

Post:

  • Select feminist theory or empowerment theory. Summarize the underlying principles and values of the theory in 3 to 4 brief sentences.
  • Analyze the extent to which the underlying principles and values of the theory are consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics in 3 to 4 brief sentences.
  • Briefly describe a client from your fieldwork experience and their presenting problem in 2 to 3 sentences using the theory you selected.
  • Identify one ethical standard from the NASW Code of Ethics that would apply to the client you described.
  • Explain how the theory is consistent with the work you did with the client and the ethical standard.
By Day 5

Respond to two colleagues:

  • Explain how theories help inform social work competencies related to engaging with diversity and difference and advancing human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice.

Assignment: Application of Feminist Theory to a Case Study

This week your theoretical orientation is feminist theory. You will use the same case study that you chose in Week 2. Use the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.

To upload your media to this Assignment, use the Kaltura Media option from the mashup tool drop-down menu. Refer to the Kaltura Media Uploader area in the course navigation menu for more information about how to upload media to the course.

By Day 7

Submit a Kaltura video of yourself discussing the client from the perspective of feminist theory. Your video should be no longer than 5 minutes.

  • Although this is a professional presentation, it is not a formal presentation as in a speech. Imagine that you are discussing your case with a group of peers in a meeting. To verbally present a case can be challenging—but it is also a skill for which practice can relieve anxiety and result in improvement. This will give you an opportunity to practice how to deliver material in a professional manner.
  • You can have notes in front of you to help you remember your points.
  • However, your video does need to be professional. In other words, dress professionally, maintain eye contact as if you were speaking in front of your colleagues, and finally be sure to record yourself in a room that is quiet and where no one interrupts you.

Your video presentation should include the following:

  • In 1 to 2 sentences, identify and describe the problem to be worked on in your chosen case study.
  • In 1 to 2 sentences, explain how feminist theory you are utilizing defines and explains the cause of the problem.
  • In 1 to 2 sentences, use feminist theory to describe the role of the social worker to facilitate change in the case study.
  • In the assessment phase, identify 2 assessment questions you will ask to explore what the client’s goals are and how they will get there.
    • Remember, feminist theory should be driving the assessment.
  • Describe two interventions to address the problem and explain how the clients will implement the interventions.
    • Remember, feminist theory should be driving the interventions.
  • In 2 to 3 sentences, discuss how you would evaluate if one of the interventions you identified is effective with the client.
  • Explain how, specifically, you will set the tone throughout your work with the client to reduce the hierarchical relationship and make it more collaborative.
  • Evaluate one strength and one limitation of feminist theory in working with the client.

Be sure to:

  • Identify and correctly reference the case study you have chosen.
  • Speak clearly.

ALTON MOORE RE: Discussion – Week 7COLLAPSE

Empowerment  Theory

Summary of Underlying Principles and Values

Most people as individuals usually know what their needs are better than anyone else. Although most people do not think about it, each one of us holds the power to act upon these needs but may not realize this during a crisis or in a difficult situation. The individual may need guidance from someone asking them the right questions that will help this realize and understand this fact. They need to understand that once they start acting on their needs and begin empowering themselves to improve their situations, this is not a short term process. As they continue through their life the empowering process should also be a part of their lives. It does not matter what background a person has, all of us have some knowledge and experience that can be used to empower ourselves to do better in difficult situations.

Consistency with the NASW Code of Ethics

As social workers using a theory such as the empowerment theory, we are helping the clients understand and address their problems therefore we are providing a service to these clients which is consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics. AS the clients progress during the use of the empowerment theory this in turn is helping them to overcome whatever social injustice they may have been facing which is also consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics. Some of these clients may not exactly feel worthy of treatment for whatever reasons but as social workers we are to treat them with dignity and as worthy people. As we do this hopefully the clients themselves with realize their worth as a person. This is also consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics.

Client
There was a male in his middle fifties who was suffering from mental issues which eventually led him to be placed in a Rehabilitation facility. He had lost his ability to work and had complications from hallucinations and some depression issues. All of this was compounded by the fact he had a history of refusing his medications on a regular basis. The ethical standard I would apply here is dignity and worth of a person. As time went by while dealing with this individual, he began to understand that his life was worth something even though he was having these issues. Eventually he began to take his medications until he was back on a regular schedule and in turn his whole situation began to improve. The frequency of the hallucinations decreased and his depression episodes were decreased.

YETUNDE ODEGBILE RE: Discussion – Week 7COLLAPSE

The feminist theory states the different situations women encounter, and it advocates for women and equality in the following areas: their nationality, gender, race, and sexual orientation (Turner,2017). Among the values upheld by Feminist theory is social change, advocacy, equality, and accountability, gender equality, and remove all forms of oppression.

According to the NASW code of ethics 2019, it states that  Social workers should not practice, condone, facilitate, or collaborate with any form of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, or mental or physical ability.

The client from my field experience is a 28years old African American her name is Lisa; she has a history of substance abuse and Self-harm and depression. She has two children, and she tried getting jobs in several places, but she said places she applied they don’t give the feminine gender jobs.

One ethical standard violated is gender discrimination; in her situation, she is marginalized when she wants to get a job.

Feminist theory encourages me to speak out for women that their voices are not being heard, advocating for the feminine gender removing every form of marginalization and bring a change to society.

Initial Post Instructions
In week three, we were looking at rights ethics with regards to Locke. As a reminder, Locke said we have inalienable rights to life, liberty, and property. It is immoral to violate them. Many think we have more rights than those listed by Locke. Some even think we have a right to health care. That means it is the duty of the state to provide each citizen with their medical needs.

Rights theory says to respect the entitlements we have. If a right is inalienable, it cannot truly be violated ethically even with our consent. We have basic needs. Rights are something beyond needs. They are what we should be authorized to have. We are due what we have a right to. That is not always the case with need. For example, we need food, but people often go hungry. A need refers to something we need physically to exist. A right is a moral entitlement to something. Asking if we have a right to food is a moral question. Needs are determined by the requirements of the body and of material existence. Rights are determined by moral reflection, inquiry, an argument We have a right to own property. We do not need it to live. We could imaginably be allowed to use another’s. We have a right to own a home. We can rent.

Initial Post Instructions
For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2:

Option 1: Assess the moral solutions arrived at through “care” (care-based ethics) and “rights” ethics to social issues of ethical import such as poverty, drug use, and/or lack of health care,

That is, note any ethical problems that arise related to those particular issues. Then, say how both care-based and rights theory of ethics would solve those problems.

Are those solutions correct? Why or why not?

What is your own approach there?

Option 2: What moral guidelines should we use when it comes to recently introduced healthcare technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples) and social technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples)?

Involve care-based ethics in your answer

Follow-Up Post Instructions
Respond to at least one peer. If possible, respond to one peer who chose an option different than the one you chose. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification. Make sure that you add additional information and not repeat the same information already posted on the discussion board as you further the dialogue.

Writing Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 posts (1 initial & 1 follow-up)
  • Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside scholarly source)
  • APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Answer 1:

Option 1

As healthcare professionals, we want to provide the best possible care for our patients which means we should hold ourselves to higher standards. This includes fostering trust, accountability, respect, and minimizing errors. When it comes to new healthcare and social technologies, ethics plays a big role. We should consider patient confidentiality, autonomy, cultural sensitivity, humanitarianism, the environment, non-maleficence, safety, efficacy, trust, and others. “The most powerful and socially legitimate claims in a technology design project usually involve efficacy, safety, and what is considered ‘good for the patient’ (Lehoux, et. al., 2014).” Technology has been and can continue to be beneficial for patients and society, but they need to be developed appropriately that considers all members of society.

One example of healthcare or social technology would be AI or artificial intelligence. Sure, this could potentially be amazing and provide quick results, wise decision making, enhanced customer experience, manage multiple tasks at once, research, and analyze data. But, what about the people? Wouldn’t it take away from the one-on-one, personal interaction between patient and Dr. or just from person to person in society? There could be the potential of patient confidentiality breaches or less privacy, manipulation of behavior, robotic human interactions, as well as higher costs and fewer job opportunities. “If technology is not ethical, creating and deploying it can become a risk to the hospital, increase costs (including reputational costs), reduce the quality of the patient experience, and destroy trust and cooperation between patients and staff as well as within the medical team itself (Cossitt, 2020).”

From the perspective of care-based ethics or ethics of care, robotics takes away from our personal virtues and ability to care. As people, we need social interaction, human to human contact to survive. Ethics of care focuses on being kind, generous, courageous, just, and prudent. Ethics of care relates to empathy. It says that we make decisions based on how we would want to be treated or if we were walking in their shoes. We need to be able to accommodate both private and personal factors for technology advancements to be successful. “Public life requires justice and beneficence, while private life requires love and caring (Rachels, 2019, p. 165).” How would AI be able to provide those things?

Answer 2:

Option 2:

Being a CNA in a hospital now, I am seeing so many different new technologies being used. I am always told “back in the day we had paper charts” or “back in the day we didn’t have a vein finder, we found it ourselves”. I feel these two new technologies to health care are essential, but can also be a mess up. “By 1992, hardware had become more affordable, powerful, and compact and the use of personal computers, local area networks, and the Internet provided faster and easier access to medical information” (Evans, 2016). People now can access a persons medical chart at the tips of their fingers in a hospital or dr office. This can be bad if it got into the hands of the wrong person and then HIPAA is being violated. HIPAA is the act of remaining a patients privacy, giving out no information to anyone who isn’t on the care team of the patient. Although paper charts weren’t the best invention either. Staff would carry all the patients medical records in a folder and if they accidently left it somewhere, a person can pick it up and see the entire persons privacy. Another new invention in the medical field is a vein finder. This fancy device is projected onto the skin to locate veins and arteries within the arm. They also come in ultrasound form. “Vein Finders are optical devices that use the behavior of Infrared light to create an image and superimpose project it onto the viewing area. Infrared light is projected onto the viewing area and is absorbed at the locations where blood (veins) reside” (Mariano, 2019). These neat devices are commonly used on pediatric patients I have witnessed and trauma patients. Although these are very handy and neat, it makes our skills as nurses disappear with searching and locating a vein yourself.

New healthcare technologies are neat, but not all the time does it do what is the best for healthcare. There is pros and cons to every healthcare technology, but I believe the creators of each device is trying to make healthcare easier and faster to care for a patient in a quick timely manner.

Discussion: Individual vs. Structural-Cultural Theories

Theories help frame more than presenting problems—they also frame social problems, and both types of problems can be linked in relation to client issues. For example, many scholars and social workers have attempted to understand the social problem of poverty. Turner and Lehning (2007) classified various psychological theories to explain poverty under two headings: (1) individual-related theories or (2) structural/cultural-related theories. In other words, think of these two headings as lenses in viewing poverty. In this Discussion, you apply lenses through which to understand a client’s problem in relation to social problems.

To prepare:

  • Read this article listed in the Learning Resources: Turner, K., & Lehning, A. J. (2007). Psychological theories of poverty. Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, 16(1/2), 57–72. doi:10.1300/J137v16n01-05
  • Select a theory under the individual-related theories and a theory under the structural/cultural-related theories.
  • Complete the handout “Comparing Individual-Related and Structural/Cultural-Related Theories” to help you craft your response. (Note: You do not need to upload the handout to the Discussion forum. The handout is intended to assist you in writing your Discussion post.)
By Day 3

Post:

  • Describe how a social worker would conceptualize a presenting problem of poverty from the two theories you selected.
  • Explain how this conceptualization differs from an individual-related versus a structural/cultural-related theoretical lens.
  • Compare how the two theoretical lenses differ in terms of how the social worker would approach the client and the problem and how the social worker would intervene.
By Day 5

Respond to at least two colleagues:

  • Evaluate one identified strength and one identified limitation your colleague may encounter when employing an individual-related theory and a structural/cultural-related theory to formulating interventions for poverty.

Assignment: Application of Systems Theory to a Case Study

In this course, you will be asked to select one case study and to use it throughout the entire course. By doing this, you will have the opportunity to see how theories guide your view of a client and the client’s presenting problem. Although the case may be the same, each time you use a different theory, your perspective of the problem changes, which then changes how you go about asking the assessment questions and how you intervene.

The first theoretical approach you will use to apply to a case study is systems theory. In other words, your theoretical orientation—your lens—will be systems theory as you analyze a social work case study.

Different theories can be used to take a systems approach. For example, Bertalanffy’s General Systems Theory considers how a system is made of smaller subsystems that influence each other and seek homeostasis, whereas Brofennerbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory focuses on how an individual’s experience is influenced by different system levels (micro, meso, exo, macro, and chrono). Systems theory is commonly used to understand the interrelationships of the systems (e.g., family, community, organizations, society) of the client. If you are working with families, communities, and organizations, it is also beneficial to use systems theory to get a holistic picture of all the interrelated parts of the system.

To prepare: Select and focus on one of four case studies listed in the Learning Resources. You will use this same case study throughout the course.

By Day 7
  • Focus on the identified client within your chosen case.
  • Analyze the case using a systems approach, taking into consideration both family and community systems.
  • Complete and submit the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet based on your analysis.

Angelica Wiggins RE: Discussion – Week 2COLLAPSE

As social workers, theories help us to better understand the problems and world around us. Poverty is a social problem that has been examined through a variety of lenses or theories. These theories are typically classified as either being individual or cultural.

Individual-Related Theory

McClelland’s Need for Achievement Theory suggests that there are barriers to achievement and it is necessary for an individual to overcome these barriers. Further, McClelland theorized that individuals who have a need for achievement take calculated risks, often work alone, like to receive feedback, and have a strong need to set and accomplish goals (Turner & Lehning, 2007). When looking at poverty through this lens, one would conclude that if an individual is living in poverty then they lack these common characteristics needed to overcome barriers. When using this theory, a social worker would need to help the client identify barriers as well as use a strengths-based approach to set and achieve identified goals. Utilizing solutions focused therapy or a similar approach could also be beneficial.

Cultural-Related Theory

Sen’s Empowerment Theory proposes that poverty is more than just someone’s socioeconomic status, it is essentially an imbalance of political and psychological power (Turner & Lehning, 2007). By looking at poverty through this lens social workers would see the barriers that society produces for some individuals entrapping them in a cycle of poverty. In order for poverty to be eradicated according to this perspective the balance of power would need to shift. Social workers utilizing this theory would want to work at the macro level to advocate for policy change and more representation of specific groups in our government.

Ebony Mcennis RE: Discussion – Week 2COLLAPSE

The first theory I would like to discuss is an individual theory known as “Achievement Theory”. Achievement theory also known as Acquired needs theory comes from the theorist David McClelland. McClelland proposed that individual’s specific needs are acquired over time and are shaped by one’s life experiences. This theory also reminds me of environmental theory. Most of the needs according to McClelland can be classed as either affiliation, power, or achievement. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is also similar to this theory with the notion you are your environment.

Here are a breakdown of the terms:

  1. Achievement- has strong need to accomplish goals, takes calculated risks, likes to receive consistent feedback, and often likes to work alone.
  2. Affiliation: Wants to belong to the group, wants to be liked, favors teamwork over competition, and does not like high risk.
  3. Power: Likes control, and to influence others, likes to win arguments, enjoys competition when winning, and enjoys status and recognition.

As a social worker, I would first need to identify which dominant behaviors my client is experiencing, and I can use some of this information to help set goals and provide feedback. It will also be important to help the client identify personal barriers they feel are hindering their goals. It will also be important after identifying behaviors to structure treatment by catering to those needs the client possess so they are comfortable introducing new learned behavior. For example if my client is all about achievement it will be important to introduce challenging but reachable goals, and provide feedback to them. This is allowing the familiarity, while also introducing the new behavior little by little. I also want to note that I do not agree that the poor have not developed a need for achievement. I feel that barriers are also achievements in some sort.

Second theory:

Empowerment theory proposes that poverty is more than just low income: It is a lack of political and psychological power (Sen, 1999). More specifically, Sen suggests that modern society deprives “certain” citizens of power and control, which then results in poverty for those citizens. In order to escape from such poverty, Sen believes that a society must provide all of its citizens with three things:

(1) Political, economic, and social freedom;

(2) Security and protection;

(3) Transparent governmental activities (Sen, 1999)

Therefore, I really like this theory. Primarily because I feel is deepens the conversation of poverty, and provides elements of a system designed to segregate. We have to understand that levels to socioeconomic status are designed to reserve resources. There has to be a separation, or also known as survival of the fittest.

In practice with a client I would use this theory by understanding first the system in general restricts the ability for people in poverty to overcome barriers. It will be important educate my client on available resources, and empower their current resources to make appropriate changes. Balance of power will not be shifting anytime soon, so there is work to be done at the lobbying level. Unless people of poverty know about these resources they cannot utilize them. There are also personal factors of a client that can be empowered so the client can eventually make these decisions on their own.

Assignment 3: Project Paper – Comparative Essay

July 3, 2025/in Questions /by Besttutor

This “Assignment 3” writing assignment is a comparative essay focused on topics encountered in our HUM 111 class. The project will be based on research but will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities as an organized, innovative, and critical thinker. If approached properly, it should also be fun!

Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that follows instructions and covers each part of the topic. (The title page and References list do not get included in this word count).

For the topic you choose:

1.     Establish a clear thesis about your topic as part of the introductory paragraph (often the thesis is the last thing one determines after doing the basic research and outline; however it will be placed in the first paragraph of your paper).

2.     This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. That means, if comparing subject A with subject B, don’t do the first half of the essay on subject A and then the second half on subject B–that will seem like two (2) separate essays and comparisons will tend to get lost. Instead, you should be mentioning both subjects in most of your paragraphs as you compare them throughout the essay. Comparisons will identify similarities as well as contrasts.

3.     Do not try to do everything on your two (2) subjects. You should end up narrowing your focus to a few insights and issues about the subjects being compared. And, from those fairly specific points of comparison, you will develop a thesis and glean some lessons.

4.     Follow closely the instructions below for your specific topic.

5.     Include a concluding paragraph at the end. This paragraph will, in some way, refer back to the thesis established in your first paragraph, since now you have demonstrated and supported it. It may be here that you also include your observations relating your study to the modern workplace or society (see your topic). Try to finish with flair!

6.     Use at least four (4) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text. Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Topic Choices – Choose just one (1) of the topics below:

  • Qualities of the Hero: Comparing Gilgamesh and Odysseus. Write an essay comparing these two (2) heroic figures from ancient epics of different cultures, especially focusing your analysis on the sources about their encounters with monsters: Gilgamesh encounters the monster guarding the forest, Humbaba, in Tablets 3-5 of the Epic of Gilgamesh (seehttp://www.ancienttexts.org/library/mesopotamian/gilgamesh/; scroll down to the Tablet links; think of “Tablet” numbers like chapter numbers).” Odysseus encounters Polyphemus the Cyclops in Book 9 of The Odyssey (see http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerOdyssey9.html; from line 105 to the end). Your paper should:

a) Compare Gilgamesh and Odysseus as to their heroic qualities, noting similarities and differences, using specific examples from the epics.

b) Summarize what this indicates about differences between ancient Mesopotamian and Greek cultures in their ideals and expectations.

c) From this comparison, suggest ways that current cultural ideals and expectations shape modern notions about role models and heroes.

  • Confucius and Aristotle on Virtue. Write an essay comparing these two (2) ancient thinkers on the concept of virtue or good ethical character and conduct. Stay focused on the issue; keep any biographical or other information short or limited. As much as possible, analyze their writings (in translation, of course), using Confucius’ Analects (athttp://classics.mit.edu/Confucius/analects.html ) and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (at http://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/nicomachaen.html ). Your paper should:

a) Compare the teachings of Confucius and Aristotle on what constitutes virtue or good ethical character and conduct, noting similarities and differences in specific ideas or emphasis.

b) Consider what your findings suggest about differences between ancient Chinese and ancient Greek culture.

c) From this comparison, suggest ideas of virtue that can apply to ethics in a modern setting, such as a diverse workplace.

  • Comparing Sculptures of Ancient India and Greece. Write an essay comparing the way gods and humans were depicted in sculpture in ancient India and Greece, and identify the cultural values and ideals that these art works reflect in each case. Your paper should:

a) Using specific examples, compare the way gods and people were depicted in the sculptures of ancient India and Greece, noting similarities and differences.

b) Identify the cultural values and ideals that these art works reflect for each society.

c) From this comparison, suggest a modern situation of artistic expression and the ways it reflects or counters prevailing cultural values.

  • Comparing Ancient Skeptics. Write an essay comparing Lucretius and Wang Chong (=Wang Ch’ung), skeptical philosophers of ancient Rome and China. They were skeptical about popular religious and spiritual beliefs and widely-held superstitions. Lucretius was an Epicurean philosopher of Roman culture (Chapter 6). Wang Ch’ung was a thinker in ancient Chinese culture (Chapter 7). Focus your comparison on their writings as found at http://www.humanistictexts.org/lucretius.htm and http://www.humanistictexts.org/wangchung.htm#On Not Flying to Heaven. Your paper should:

a) Using examples from their writings, compare these two (2) thinkers on their views about specific subjects and on their approach in explaining and expressing their skepticism.

b) From this comparison, identify popular beliefs in each culture that seem similar and those that seem different.

c) From this comparison, suggest any modern situation in which materialist skeptics confront spiritual and religious beliefs, and comment on the considerations of free expression and cultural respect.

  • Comparing Ancient Male Rulers. Take any two (2) of these rulers and write an essay comparing them: Ramses II, Shihuangdi, Constantine, Ashoka, Pericles, or Charlemagne. Select rulers from different cultures. You may also propose (for approval or not) a ruler not listed. Avoid lengthy quoting or lengthy close paraphrasing from biographical sources. Make it YOUR comparative analysis. Your paper should:

a) Compare the two (2) rulers in terms of their situation and methods of rule and their apparent ideals and practices, noting similarities and differences. Use specific examples.

b) Consider what your study suggests about the cultures over which they ruled, identifying any similarities and differences between the cultures.

c) From this comparison, suggest lessons about different types of effective leadership in the world of modern business and / or modern politics.

  • Comparing Ancient Female Rulers. Compare the Tang Empress Wu Zetian (also known as Empress Wu or as Wu Zhao; ruled China around 690-705 AD) with either the Pharaoh Cleopatra (ruled Egypt around 51-31 BC) or the Pharaoh Hatshepsut (ruled Egypt around 1478-1458 BC). You may also propose (for approval or not) a female ruler not listed. Avoid lengthy quoting or lengthy close paraphrasing from biographical sources. Make it YOUR comparative analysis. Your paper should:

a) Compare the two (2) rulers in terms of their situation and ascent to power, their methods of rule, and their achievements and resourcefulness, noting similarities and differences. Use specific examples.

b) Consider what your study suggests about the cultures over which they ruled, identifying any similarities and differences between the cultures.

c) From this comparison, suggest lessons about different types of effective leadership by a female in the world of modern business and / or modern politics.

The Project Paper will be graded on:

1.     The level to which the instructions were followed for the paper generally and for the specific topic.

2.     The establishment of a clear thesis about your topic.

3.     The adequacy and relevance of information, examples, and details which support the general thesis.

4.     Covering each part of the topic as instructed, including the comparisons, the consideration of ancient cultural differences, and the reflection on lessons for modern society or the modern workplace.

5.     The quality of your research and your persuasiveness using critical reasoning.

6.     The use and acknowledgement of a minimum of four (4) required references (the class textbook plus at least two (2) other quality academic sources) documented using the APA style –including both the use of a proper References list and the use of proper in-text citations.

7.     Adherence to standard rules of grammar, punctuation, paragraphing, and mechanics, and general clarity of presentation.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides. Both in-text citations and a References list are required. Citations and references must follow APA style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions specific to the selected topic. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the course shell for guidance).
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length. For our purposes, you may omit any abstract page.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:
