Overview

In this assignment, you will explain the roles of culture and bias in interpreting and conveying information.

Prompt

In Module One, you learned some common terminology used to explain different aspects of cultural diversity and how these terms may influence decision making. You also completed your own personal diversity assessment using Loden’s Diversity Wheel. These activities will assist you as you begin to construct a cultural diversity education and training for Project One.

In this activity, you will examine the history of Chinese immigration to the United States in order to gain a better understanding of the relationship between cultural bias, stereotyping, and communication issues among a specific group, the police, and the criminal justice system. This will also assist you as you consider the specific factors from Loden’s Diversity Wheel that impact criminal-justice interactions in Project Two, which you will complete in Module Five.

First, review the History of San Francisco’s Chinatown resource, On Police Treatment, Asian-Americans Show Ethnic, Generational Splits, and The Social History of Crime and Punishments in America: An Encyclopedia -Chinese Americans. Then, in a slide presentation, complete the following essential elements:

Cultural Stereotype

  • Provide a 50- to 100-word summary of cultural stereotypes related to Chinese immigrants.
    • Include any additional notes as speaker notes.

Self Disclosure is a foundation for intimacy in a relationship and revealing private information to others and also to know when to disclose information. There are three layers to Self-Disclosure in relationships: the outermost layers, intermediate layers and central layers. I think the central layer is appropriate for a first date because the central layer contains communication and good communication between partners are an essential for a healthy relationship.

The layers of self-disclosure include the outermost (or peripheral) layer which are demographic characteristics, the intermediate layer contains your attitude and opinion, and the central layer which contain core characteristics. While being on your “first date” the appropriate layer to discuss in that encounter would be the outermost layer in order to know the basics of your date.

the outermost/peripheral layer is the characteristics of yourself, such as birthplace, age, gender, and ethnicity. the intermediate layers are your taste in things, like music, food, and entertainment.  this contains your attitudes and opinions about things. lastly, the central layers contain core characteristics such as self-awareness, self-concept, fears, personal value, and distinctive personality traits. I believe that the peripheral and the intermediate are appropriate to discuss on the first date. it’s normal to get to know the person better by knowing where they were born or how old they are. if the conversation gets better and they have a connection then is not bad to talk about the intermediate layers. I think the central layer is when you’ve gone on a couple of dates and the person likes you enough to stay and get to know all of you then you talk about the last layer.

*WRITING RULES
  • Don’t write in all capital letters. IT IS CONSIDERED A FORM OF SHOUTING. Also, avoid all lowercase letters. The pronoun “I” should always be capitalized.
  • Use proper grammar and spelling. Online courses require the same high standards of college-level writing as face-to-face courses.
  • Keep it short. Make the message thorough, concise, and to the point. Messages are very much like telephone conversations – the clearer the communication and the shorter, the better.
  • Avoid abbreviations. The age of instant messaging (IM) has created a need for some use of abbreviations to save keystrokes. However, an online course is not an IM conversation with friends.
  • Avoid quoting in your replies. Students often reply to an e-mail by including a complete copy of the original with a short comment like “I agree” or “Okay” at the bottom. The correct way to use quotes is to include just enough material in the quote to make your comment relevant to the reader.
  • Respect threads. Your instructor creates Discussion Topics and provides directions. You may post a reply to the topic or reply to a posting. When replying to a posting, the right thing to do is to “reply” to that message. The wrong thing to do is to start a new message.  Starting a new message, in this instance, breaks the link (called a “thread”) between the original message and your response. Without that link, it will be difficult for the others in the course to follow the sequence of messages.

  1. Is Benedict correct in saying that our culture is “but one entry in a long series of possible adjustments”? What are the implications of this statement?
  2. Can we separate the descriptive (or fact-stating) aspect of anthropological study from the prescriptive (evaluative) aspect of evaluating cultures? Are there some independent criteria by which we can say that some cultures are better than others? Can you think how this project might begin?
  3. What are the implications of Benedict’s claim that morality is simply whatever a culture deems normal behavior? Is this a satisfactory equation? Can you apply it to the institution of slavery or the Nazi policy of anti-Semitism?

Case Study for Moral Status

In the “Case Study: Fetal Abnormality” four individuals that are able to make their feelings about aborting a fetus are presented. They include Jessica, Marco, Maria, and Dr. Wilson. In this scenario, Jessica is pregnant with a fetus that has a 25% chance of Down Syndrome and currently does not have any arms with a low probability they will develop. Marco is Jessica’s husband who will support her decision. Maria is the religious aunt that pleads with Jessica about her obligation to God and this unborn child. Dr. Wilson is supportive of aborting the fetus. These individuals pose various theories in determining the moral status of a fetus.

Moral Status

Dr. Wilson has provided the family with all the possible options, but shows the greatest support of abortion based on his medical knowledge of the disabilities. Dr. Wilson is utilizing the theory of cognitive properties, which states in order to have moral status one needs to be able to demonstrate a level of awareness and rationality, which fetus’s do not posses (“Theological anthropology,” 2015). Under this theory the fetus has no moral status so it is acceptable to abort it.

Maria pleads with Jessica to think about her obligations as a mother to this child, as well as respecting God’s intent. This would fall under the theory based on relationship. Jessica has a relationship to this fetus as its mother and a relationship to God, these relationships provide the fetus with moral status making abortion wrong. This also demonstrates the divine command theory, which is based on God being the creator and decides morality (Dunstan, 2012).

Jessica is in confict because of the financial burden this child poses and her religious beliefs that oppose abortion. Jessica is acting as the moral agent, a person acting for herself to make the most appropriate decision (Purtilo &Doherty, 2011). This represents the theory of moral agency, because Jessica will decide the moral status of the child. Marco is concerned about the burden of a disabled child but is willing to support Jessica. This demonstrates the theory based on relationship, because the moral status of the child may change, depending on Jessica (“Theological anthropology,” 2015).

This Authors Opinion

This author believes in the theory of sentience and relationship. Sentient beings have moral status and relationships that determine moral status (“Theological anthropology,” 2015). This will influence the decision of abortion because the author believes that a fetus can feel pain and that the mother has an obligation to the fetus, as its mother to protect it as well as an obligation to God not destroy one of his creations.

Conclusion

The four individuals in this case study, as well as the author had different values when it comes to human life. As a Christian this author believes that abortion is immoral and goes against God’s plan. However, as a Nurse my opinion should not influence the decision of a patient. A decision regarding abortion is a difficult choice to make, and is a decision that a patient will need to live with for the rest of their lives. As a medical professional we have a responsibility to provide all of the options in an unbiased manner.

Week 3: Psychoanalytical Theories and Attachment Theory

Psychodynamic theory and its derivatives can be traced to the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. You likely are familiar with the image that often conjures Freud: A client lying on a couch with a therapist sitting nearby, notepad in hand. The psychoanalytic terms “id,” “ego,” “superego,” “repression,” and “unconscious” are deeply embedded in the layperson’s jargon.

Many theories have sprung from Freud’s psychoanalytical principles. Attachment theory is one example. Its originator, John Bowlby, was directly influenced by Freud, but because of Bowlby’s experiences in working with disturbed children, he believed that a child’s psychosocial development is linked to their attachment to the mother. Because all theories must be tested using empirical research methods, Mary Ainsworth tested John Bowlby’s theory using the Strange Situation experiment, which involved observing children react to caregivers and strangers. The results from her research led to what we now know as attachment styles.

This week, you switch your lenses to consider a case study through these theories.

Discussion: Evaluating Psychoanalytical Theory

Sigmund Freud is often hailed as the father of psychoanalytical theory. His theory was the first to point to the influence of early childhood experiences. However, psychoanalytical theory has received a lot of criticism. Although theories are supposed to be objective and value-free, they are developed within a sociocultural and political context. For example, with historical perspective, it is possible to see that values within the Western Victorian era influenced Freud as he developed his theory. Another criticism is that many psychoanalytical concepts cannot be measured. For example, how do you measure the id, ego, and superego or the notion of unconscious conflicts? As a result, it is difficult to test the accuracy of these concepts using social science research methods.

It is important to critically evaluate theories for their practical use. For example, is it appropriate to use a theory when working with diverse populations or with populations different from those with whom the theory was normed (e.g., women, racial and ethnic minority groups, those who are economically disadvantaged)? Finally, are the assumptions of theories consistent with the values underlying the field? In this Discussion, you respond to some of these concerns.

Assignment: Application of Attachment Theory to a Case Study

As you have read, theory guides the conceptualization of the client’s problem and how social workers assess and intervene relative to the problem. However, theory can also shape the self-reflective questions social workers ask themselves. Clients often come to social workers under stress or distress. This then affects how the social worker responds and thus the client-social worker relationship. As a result, Foley, Nash, and Munford (2009) employed attachment theory as a “lens in which to view the reflective process itself and to gain greater understanding and empathy for what each social worker within each unique social work-client relationship can access of that relationship for reflection” (pp. 44).

This week, you will apply attachment theory to the case study you chose in Week 2. In other words, your theoretical orientation—or lens—is attachment theory as you analyze the case study.

To prepare:

  • Review the same case study you selected from last week’s Assignment. (Remember, you will be using this same case study throughout the entire course). Use the “Dissecting a Theoryand Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory, and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.

Freud’s psychoanalytical theory focusing on the individual’s “personality development, through three fundamental structures, the id, ego, and superego” (Auld, Hyman & Rudzinski, 2005). His theory addresses our internal struggles of right and wrong.

Applying Freud’s psychoanalytical theory to women and individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups is not appropriate. He is not an easy man to understand and he seems very sexist. Freud stated, “women have less strongly developed superegos, and all women are passive, hysterical, and women have penis envy.”

I do, however, agree with him that early childhood development is important. Childhood experiences can indeed shape who you are as an adult. He brought to the light the importance of talking about our problems. That is psychology. His viewpoint about the unconscious is good. Our unconscious can influence our behavior (McLeod, 2014).

At the core, there were some things that Freud was right about in regard to his theories, however, he was incredibly sexist, and that goes against the social work values and ethics. He judged women harshly and viewed infants as insecure. His views on women and infants go against social work values and ethics. Social workers are to help people, not judge them and to set all personal feelings and beliefs aside. Social workers are “to not discriminate over another person’s race, religion, culture, beliefs, color, gender, their age, a person’s physical or mental appearance, as well as their age or marital status” (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). That deems this theory inconsistent with social work values and ethics.

Freud is definitely one of the most influential individuals when it comes to understanding the human mind. His theory also known as the psycho dynamic theory is actually a combination of both his ideas regarding theory and therapy. According to Freud (1915), the unconscious mind is the primary source of human behavior. Like an iceberg, the most important part of the mind is the part you cannot see. The psycho dynamic theory states that experiences within our childhood have great influence on our adult lives. Our childhood is also where personality is shaped, and those events that occur within childhood can stick with a person within the unconscious and may cause issues in adulthood.  I think its fair to say that our values, feelings, and decisions are heavily influenced by past experiences, and as we grow and experience new things our old memories are held in our unconscious and may reappear if triggered.

In regards to women and the psycho dynamic theory, we have to remember the time and the mindset most men had when it came to women. Freud is known for his controversial opinion about women, he felt they are defiant, and add no value to their own species. There is also an article where Freud says women have ” penis envy” this was the outrageous notion that women in the adolescent stage end up resenting the mother because they do not carry male genitalia and this creates some separation between the mother and daughter.  I do not believe this one bit. I think its almost an insult to women as a whole. Now although Freud had some ideas that did not make sense, I understand the time period he lived in. To his defense he made several strides moving forward to understand women and even enlisted the help of Anna Q a social worker who is known for talk therapy.

Last but not least, Freud’s theory and application to minorities groups has been argued many different ways over the years. During this time Freud developed his theory during huge segregation and minorities were said to be inferior. This was also the same for testing, which has caused alot of Freud’s data to be speculated. Now one may argue that the human mind is the same between all races, however I disagree. As Freud stated experiences shape who we are and for minorities the experiences of the time were more traumatic and I feel there could have beenalot learned from the time and how it affected individuals. Because Freud was biased against women and simply ignored minorities I do not think he falls compliant with the social work code of ethics, however the code of ethics has also been shaped over time and I feel Freud has made the human mind easier to understand. So in summary yes, the theory is not aligned with socialwork code of ethics, yes it discriminates against women and minorities. There is an understanding of the time and how over the years we have developed. I wouldn’t count out Freuds theory completely, but we can not generalize this theory as the ultimate tool for therapy.

Both transference and countertransference can be evident in any client–therapist relationship, but are especially important in working with children because of a common instinct among adults to protect and nurture the young. A Comparison of Three Perspectives on the Evolution of Technology

Your essay should have 5 paragraphs. Paragraph 1 is your lead paragraph. It will contain an overview of what you have to say in comparing and contrasting the perspectives of Gerhard Lenski, Leslie White, and Alvin Toffler with respect to the evolution of technology.

 

Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4, are your body paragraphs. In your essay, paragraph 2 should describe the perspective of Gerhard Lenski.

 

In paragraph 3, you’ll write about the perspective of Leslie White.

 

In paragraph 4, you’ll describe and discuss the perspective of Alvin Toffler.

Approaches to Measuring Technological Progress

Sociologists, anthropologists, and other scholars and intellectuals have developed distinct approaches to understanding the nature of technological progress. We’ll discuss four important theorists in this section of the lesson. They represent four perspectives on the relationships between technological development and our social world.

Gerhard Lenski

Sociologist Gerhard Lenski maintained that technological progress has been the driving force in the evolution of human civilization. In effect, civilization and technological progress go hand in hand. In this regard, the key to human progress is information. In particular, the more we know about how to harness and utilize the resources of the natural world, the greater our ability to advance the interests of human societies. He recognized four stages of communication.

· Stage 1 is the passing on of genes from generation to generation. You might call this biological communication.

· Stage 2 is sentience. As we develop our abilities to understand and become aware of the world around us, our adaptation to Earth’s environments is facilitated. We are able to share our experience.

· In Stage 3, we become capable of logic. Now we can serve collective goals based on observation and fact-based analysis. For example, if dark clouds gather on the horizon, we can normally assume that rain can be expected.

· In Stage 4, humans master language, writing, and the capacity for creating symbols. At this stage we have the foundation of civilization.

Lenski also proposed four levels of technological development.

· At the hunter-gathering level, existence is a hand-to-mouth effort to reduce food insecurity.

· At the next level, part of the food supply comes from what amounts to horticulture.

· At the next level, we have organized agriculture. Food surpluses allow for the rise of complex social orders, including social class inequality and a complex division of labor that lends itself to technological advances in arts, crafts, architecture, and civil engineering.

· With the industrial revolution, the food-based economies are replaced by a new kind of social class inequality and revolutionary advances in the means of production.

Leslie White

Anthropologist Leslie Alvin White focused on the harnessing and control of energy. For White, controlling energy is the primary purpose and function of any culture. White differentiated five stages of human development.

· Stage 1: Human muscle power is the source of energy.

· Stage 2: Humans harness the energy provided by domesticated animals. Humans raise and herd livestock for food energy while using some animals, especially the horse, to provide transport and mounts for warriors and hunters..

· Stage 3: The agricultural revolution provides surplus food energy to extend the value of Stage 2.

· Stage 4: Especially as expressed in the Industrial Revolution, humans harness the power of natural resources, such as coal, oil, and natural gas.

· Stage 5: Nuclear energy is harnessed. (White was perhaps a bit too optimistic about nuclear energy, given its dangerous drawbacks.)

White developed a formula that remains useful in our day: P = E*T. Here “E” is a measure of energy consumed and “T” is the measure of efficiency respecting technical factors utilizing that energy. “P” is what we get when calculate “E*T.” For example, in comparing early steam engines with steam-powered turbines, the efficiency of the latter will increase the value “P.” In White’s words, “culture evolves as the amount of energy harnessed per capita per year is increased . . . or as the efficiency of the instrumental means of putting the energy to work is increased.”

Alvin Toffler

Alvin Toffler is a journalist, social critic, and futurist. While various intellectuals are associated with ideas and prognostications about what we have come to think of as the postindustrial era, Toffler stands out. That’s because what he had to say reached a large audience. Here’s a quote that gives you a good sense of Toffler’s view of our current era. To survive, to avert what we have termed future shock, the individual must become infinitely more adaptable and capable than ever before. We must search out totally new ways to anchor ourselves, for all the old roots– religion, nation, community, family, or profession–are now shaking under the hurricane impact of the accelerative thrust. It is no longer resources that limit decisions, it is the decision that makes the resources.

 

Toffler is best known for the concept of future shock. He defined future shock as one’s personal perception that there is “too much change in too short a period of time.” Toffler provided compelling arguments to the effect that human societies are undergoing mind-boggling social and technological structural change. We are living in an era of unprecedented revolution as industrial society is morphing into what he calls a “super-industrial” society. And, in Toffler’s view, the acceleration of change is overwhelming for many, if not most of us. Millions of us are feeling disconnected, living a life characterized by “shattering stress and disorientation.” We are “future shocked.” We are all but drowning in what he called information overload. (He invented that term.) In Toffler’s view, future shock is responsible for most of our current social problems.

Toffler identified three stages in the development of society: agrarian, industrial, and postindustrial. Stage 1 got underway in the Neolithic period (New Stone Age) when humans invented agriculture. He associated the advent of the agricultural revolution with an advance from “barbarity” to “civilization.” Stage 2 began in England with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution. During that period, Toffler pointed to the inventions of machine tools and the steam engine. Stage 3 began in the second half of the 20th century with the inventions of automated manufacturing, robotics, and the computer. Stage 3 is also associated with the exponential growth of the service sector. As a result, the need for brain work has increased as the need for manual labor (such as factory work) has decreased.
