Case Study using the Theory of Henderson or Peplau

Overview

This case study will help you compare and contrast Virginia Henderson’s and Hildegard Peplau’s theories. Henderson focuses on 14 basic human needs, while Pepalu has a psychiatric focus.

Select either one of these two theorists and complete the table.

Case

Jim is a 57¬ year ¬old recovering alcoholic who lost his wife last year to cancer. Since that time, he has not been able to find regular employment as a construction worker. He does not drive and has to walk to work any time there is a job. He lives in a shelter in an urban area of Jacksonville, Florida. He has presented for care at the free clinic due to an injured shoulder, which happened while lifting a large plank on the job a week ago. He is not on any medications, although he was prescribed a “blood pressure pill” a few years ago. He was hospitalized once in 1995 after a car accident.

Instructions:

Write three problems, three corresponding goals, and at least 3 corresponding nursing interventions (for each problem) for this client based on either Henderson or Peplau’s theory.

For example, one of Henderson’s 14 basic needs is to “work in such a way that there is a sense of accomplishment”¬. A problem based on this need could be: Impaired role performance. A goal would be for the patient to list steps he could take to re¬establish part¬ or full¬time employment. A nursing intervention could be to educate the client on community resources, such as Work Source.
