Power Point Guidelines

· Prepare 10-15 slides including one title slide and a references slide – be sure to put your name on the title slide

· Introduce your topic

· Provide an overview of what you learned from the literature

· Describe the implications for nurse leaders

· Be creative – use visuals – don’t put too much content on each slide and keep it interesting. Make sure that you do a thorough internet search and review of the information available on your topic – please go beyond the nursing literature.

The RN to BSN University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using nontraditional experiences for practicing nurses. These experiences come in the form of direct and indirect care experiences in which licensed nursing students engage in learning within the context of their hospital organization, specific care discipline, and local communities.

Module 1 – Case

EPIDEMIOLOGY AND HEALTH STATISTICS

Assignment Overview

The 10 Essential Public Health Services describe the public health activities that all communities should undertake. Throughout the course, you will consider all of those services. You will begin working on the report by applying what you have learned about Public Health, Epidemiology, and Health Statistics.

Case Assignment

• Describe the epidemiology of measles.
• Identify three factors that have contributed to the global resurgence of measles.
• Compare and contrast statistics regarding measles globally, in the United States, and in your state (identify the state about which you are writing).
• Summarize continuing challenges to measles control in the United States.

Please respond to the discussions as they relate to your area of public health emphasis (i.e., environmental & occupational health, healthcare administration, health education, or general public health).

Your comments will be graded on how well they meet the Discussion Requirements posted under “Before You Begin.”

As you review the literature regarding measles, what sources will you use to obtain the required information? What government websites will you explore? Are there local health statistics databases available? What are the first three things you will do as you begin working on an outbreak response plan? For example, will you begin by doing some research about the disease? Or would you begin by researching the literature on preventing/treating the disease among immigrant populations? Would you interview people familiar with the population? If so, who? Or would you do something else? Please explain your rationale.

HEALTH BEHAVIOR, COMMUNICATION, AND ADVOCACY

Assignment Overview

To understand influential factors related to an outbreak, you must assess and expand on concepts related to Health Behavior and Health Communication and Advocacy.

Case Assignment

Write a script for a presentation that you have been asked to make at a community coalition meeting. The script must address (but is not limited to) the following:

• Verbalize the problem, needs at the local/state level, and the type of assistance you seek.
• Describe the intrapersonal and interpersonal factors which contribute to an individual contracting measles.
• Identify health behaviors an individual can adopt/minimize to reduce their chance of contracting measles.
• Explain how the main principles of the social marketing theory can be used to change behavior associated with measles.
• Examine the benefits and consequences of informing and influencing policymakers through health-related advocacy.
