Biomedical Ethics in the Christian Narrative

  3 DQ 2

Creation: The Christian narrative of creation is essential to Christian theology. This biblical narrative is the foundation that states God is the creator of everything that exists (Grand Canyon University, 2018). God described his act of creation as good, which means that it was valuable and everything in its original state was the way it was supposed to be (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Men and women are created in the image of God and whether in health or sickness all humans have intrinsic value.

Fall: The fall and separation from God broke homeostasis of creation itself, bringing upon disease, sickness, suffering and death. These are all effects of the fall and not part of God’s original design (Grand Canyon University, 2018).

Redemption: The brokenness of the fall is being restored through redemption. The resurrection has several implications on disease, healing and death such as a motive for Christian ethics which is primarily love (Grand Canyon University, 2018).

Restoration: A renewed world is the goal of the biblical narrative. The biblical view of restoration informs the Christian health care provider that while medical science is good, it is limited and imperfect (Grand Canyon University, 2018). Healing from illness requires spiritual and communal restoration (Grand Canyon University, 2018).

One could find comfort and hope in the light of illness according to the four parts of the Christian biblical narrative. Christians need a firm foundation to guide and sustain them and through the biblical narrative provides a rich and deep perspective for the many ethical issues encountered in the world (Grand Canyon University 2018). These frameworks provide wisdom and guidance for complex dilemmas (Grand Canyon University 2018).

Using 200-300 words APA format with at least two references. Sources must be published within the last 5 years.

What do the four parts of the Christian biblical narrative (i.e., creation, fall, redemption, and restoration) say about the nature of God and of reality in relation to the reality of sickness and disease? From where would one find comfort and hope in the light of illness according to this narrative? Explain in detail each part of the narrative above and analyze the implications.

Biomedical Ethics in the Christian Narrative

 3 DQ 2

In creation, God made humans to be in his image. We fall short of the glory of God, therefore our own choices in life affect what kind of sickness and disease that occur to us. In the fall, Adam and Eve did not listen to God and now all of mankind suffer from this disobedience. This disobedience leaves us vulnerable to sin and with that sin comes illness and disease. In redemption, God sent Jesus to die for our sins. This act gives us hope when we are most vulnerable from illness and disease. In restoration, one day God will come back to judge every human and wipe away all sin from earth. This allows us to look forward to healing from our illness and diseases. According to Tesu, “it teaches us how to transform painful and sad trials into ways and means of spiritual growth by adding them to the happy circumstances of our existence and by giving life itself a profound meaning and a high moral sense.”

One would find comfort and hope in the light of illness according to this narrative by understanding that not one human can be perfect and be just like God. It allows us to know that everyone sins and makes mistakes in life. These sins have consequences and that is where illness/disease comes into play in our lives. When we are at our lowest points in life because of this illness/disease, that is when we are closest to God. These illnesses and diseases humble us and bring us closer to God. This allows us to open our eyes to how much he loves us and how he gave his only son for our sins. We turn to faith and put all of our trust in God to help us through the illness/disease. It shows us that we are human and that God is still in control of what happens to us.

Analyzing Parametric Statistics

Analyzing Parametric Statistics

As a practice scholar, you are searching for evidence to translate into practice. In your review of the evidence, you locate a quasi-experimental research study as possible evidence to support a practice change. You notice that the study aims to make a prediction that relates to the correlation between study variables. The study sample size is large and normally distributed. Reflect upon this scenario to address the following.

  • In your appraisal of the evidence, you note that an independent variable is not present and that a Spearman’s ranked correlation is used to analyze data. Is this the correct level of correlational analysis? Explain your rationale.
  • Are association and correlational analysis equivalent in determining relationships between variables?
  • Do these findings impact your decision about whether to use this evidence to inform practice change? Why or why not?

Generalizing the Findings

Generalization extends the implications of the study findings from the sample studied to a larger population. For example, if the study was conducted on diabetic patients, it may be possible to translate the findings to persons with other practice problems or to healthy people.

What factors you need to analyze to generalize a research result?

Introduction

Our nation has been a melting pot of cultures since its birth and this multiculturalism is increasing rapidly. This diversity is creating a significant challenge for interactions at all levels of society, particularly in healthcare. In order to meet this challenge,  advanced practice nurses must first understand the concept of culture, as well as health and illness.

Culture is defined by Dayer-Berenson, as “the shared values, traditions, norms, customs, arts, history, folklore, and institutions of a group of people who are unified by race, ethnicity, language, nationality, sexual orientation, and/or religion.”(2014). In order to help our patients connect with their healthcare providers, it is vital as advanced practice nurses to provide culturally sensitive and competent care. This will help us identify healthcare disparities and their impact on current health care in the United States.

Learning objectives for the module:

At the end of this module, the student will be able to:

  1. Define health and illness
  2. Define diversity
  3. Identify ways to provide culturally competent care
  4. Describe the impact of diversity on healthcare disparities

Topic 1: Health and Illness

The concepts of health and illness are not easily defined and are difficult to understand. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease.”  Other definitions include the state of being free from illness or injury or a general condition of the body or mind in equilibrium. The many definitions of health make it difficult to grasp and understand its meaning. The definitions of illness are just as elusive. Is it the absence or opposite of health or is it better defined as a disease or condition?  No matter the definition we need to understand that the experience of being ill is also defined by the patient.   What health may mean to a 21-year-old athlete versus a 60-year-old diabetic will vary greatly. Therefore we find individuals defining health and illness according to their own definitions. We also must realize that culture greatly affects one’s definition of health and illness, therefore as advanced practice nurses in order to provide competent care we must understand health and illness from our client’s perspective.

Topic 2: Cultural Diversity

The United States is a multicultural nation made up of cultures from around the world. According to the US Census Bureau, Asian and mixed-race people are the two fastest-growing populations in the US. Although non-Hispanic whites remain the largest group of Americans at 198 million, they are the only group with a higher death rate than the birth rate. Hispanics follow the non-Hispanic whites at 57.5 million and blacks or African Americans at 46.8 million. With the increase in these diverse populations come issues that tremendously affect their health care. Language barriers and low incomes lead to lower access and availability of health care and therefore less favorable outcomes according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report (2003). This results in daily challenges for the nurse to identify the diverse needs of the patients and address them in order to provide quality health care. In order to combat these culturally driven healthcare disparities, the advanced practice nurse must be prepared to meet the unique healthcare needs of all culturally diverse patients in their care.
