  1. EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE PROJECT– The FINAL PAPER WILL BE  PART OF STUDENT’S ACHIEVEMENT OF END OF PROGRAM STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (EPSLO)

The leadership project is an activity designed to assist students in applying concepts,theories, and principles learned in NUR4827C Leadership in Nursing. You should develop this project in conjunction with your professor This will be in response to an identified need based on your own clinical practice.  Please do not use staffing, patient acuity, or any issues such as these for your project. These issues can not be changed by a staff nurse; it is out of scope of your practice.

Based on the AACN’ Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Nursing, 2009), the student will identify a quality care or patient safety issue that exists in their clinical setting and create a proposal with goals, objectives, and strategies to address the issue.  This project will integrate and demonstrate leadership and/ or management qualities which include:

  • identification of the problem, data collection, research review and interprofessional communication.
  • Included are elements of budgeting, staffing, staff and patient satisfaction, and measurable elements that can be evaluated. 
  • The project will require collaboration with quality councils, finance, nursing and other departments. 
  • The proposed project may be presented to the leadership of the facility. 
  • Course faculty will guide the students in completion of this assignment.  Your implementation and measurement strategies must be developed from evidence-based literature and be presented in correct APA format.

PROPOSAL – 100 POINTS 

The project will first be  written in the format of a proposal paper and submitted to your professor for approval. It must be approved by your professor. The proposal should include the following:

  • Clear Definition of the Leadership or Management Problem. (Note- you may not use a previous topic from another course – See academic Integrity policy of FSW)
  • How the need was identified and the significance for nursing practice.
  • Description of the stakeholders, financial considerations, regulatory/ legal components, resources potentially needed to implement the project.
  • Specific, Measurable, and realistic Goals of the Project
  1. At least 3 References/evidence-based research related to the problem. (Include title page and reference page). All references must be no older than the past 3-5 years.
  2. NOTE IN RUBRIC- 5 REFERENCES OF SPECIFIED QUALITY ARE REQUIRED FOR FULL POINTS IN FINAL PAPER. 
  • APA 7th edition formatting required.

The therapeutic actions of Clotrimazole (Lotrimin)

Clotrimazole cream is a broad spectrum topical antifungal agent, which falls under the class of imidazole, which is a category of azole antifungal. Clotrimazole works by inhibiting the growth of the pathogenic yeasts, by changing the cell membranes’ permeability (Lawton, 2020). It causes inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis, which is an essential constituent of the cell membrane. When then the ergosterol is not synthesized, the cell is no longer able to construct an intact, and functional cell membrane. As a result of its pharmacological activities, Clotrimazole is used for the treatment of a variety of dermatophyte infections, and candidiasis. Indications for the tropical preparation include: Tinea infections such as versicolor, carpitis, corporis, cruris, manuum, and pedis, as well as Candidiasis, and Diaper rash caused by Candida albicans.

            The appropriate teaching plan in this case mainly involves education on skin care, and hygienic practices, since candida albicans, which are the causative agents for diaper rash dwell in warm and moist skin areas, which provide a suitable environmental for the fungal growth.  The mother should be educated that diaper rashes can result from irritation by stool, and urine, use of too-tight diapers which causes severe infections especially when the baby’s skin like in the case of the 6-weeks old baby.

            Teachings on skin care should be provided to prevent future occurrence, and manage the present infection to prevent it complicating. The most important step is to ensure that the baby’s diaper is kept clean, dry, and it should not be wrapped too tightly. Diapers should be vigilantly changed when spoilt to limit the time of exposure that may allow enough time for pathogenic growth. Diaper rash can be caused when the baby’s sensitive skin is exposed to irritant substances such as; highly fragranced products, including dryer sheets, and fabric softeners. The mother should be made to understand that hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products are much less irritating for the bay’s skin. Use of baby powder also helps in ensuring a dry skin, however inhalation of the powder may lead to lung irritation, thus powder use should be avoided, especially the corn starch which can worsen diaper rashes caused by candida infection (Sharma, Sharma& Rana, 2020).

            Management of the diaper rash may be challenging, as it takes a lot of time to understand the possible factor that may be resulting to the infection. The baby’s skin is usually sensitive, and constantly gets irritation when exposed to different substances. The mother should be made to understand that it may take time to identify the cause of the infection, as it requires evaluation, and identification of the specific cause that needs to be avoided.

Consider a time when you had the opportunity to become politically involved in an issue (at work or in your community). If you pursued the opportunity, what were the results? If you did not, what were the reasons?

Many nurses avoid getting involved in political issues and, by institution policies, are banned from discussing conversations of this nature at work. Politics and religion are debate-provoking topics that several organizations would rather not hear about. I have been involved in political campaigns for senators and representatives in the State of Florida in the community. Local officials are key stakeholders for the improvement of the healthcare industry. Improving operations and having the necessary fund for the right programs can be highly beneficial to our localities.

As you reflect on this week’s learning activities and your role as a practicing scholar, discuss the area of your political competency that needs further development.

The DNP scholar needs to develop an adequate communication competency (Malloch, 2017). The right attitude, words, dress code, demeanor, and tone will project an advocate image that will lobby in the highest spheres of the government. Working on effective communication and expanding my comfort level in this area is a developing trait of my DNP scholar character.

A Twitter regarding breastfeeding newborns caught my attention. I am a labor and delivery nurse, and breastfeeding is one of the essential topics discussed with mothers during their stays. Statistically, the exclusive breastfeeding cases have decreased over the years, and families tend to go by the myths instead of the science behind this beautiful natural resource (“The public health benefits of breastfeeding,” 2017). Formula feeding has become popular and convenient for working mothers who cannot stay home for the whole year recommended breastfeeding their newborns. Some of the benefits explained in the tweet are regarding the newborn health status. Babies that breasted get sick less are less prone to chronic diseases in the future and help the mom to recover quickly from her delivery (Ross-Cowdery et al., 2016).
