1. Research Article: 

a. You will use the research-based paper grading rubric as a guide to complete the transcript and the group presentation rubric for delivering the presentation. (Both rubrics attached below)

b. Prepare an 8-10 page paper (including title and reference page) written in APA 6th edition style. References no later than 4 years old. 

Research Paper Rubric   (APA Format)

Title Page: Student has an appropriate title page, completed in an APA format with the title of the paper, the student’s name, a running head and date on the cover page.

Introduction: Contains a clear purpose of writing to inform the reader relating to the selected topic.

Body: The paper will have three main points with supporting evidence to back up the points.

Conclusion: The student will a clear conclusion with future directions.

Reference Page: Student has a minimum of 3 different references and all references are in APA format, no later than 4 years old.

Background info-historic perspective: Present with depth and clarity. APA format.

Citations and references: Both present written properly and has excellent depth of research information

Week 6 Discussion: Social Institutions and Health

Initial Post Instructions
For this discussion, we will consider if the social world can be bad for your health and/or if social institutions can improve your health.

For the initial post, examine ways that some of the social institutions studied this week (the family, the educational system, or religions) might affect the health (physical, mental, spiritual) of the people in the institution. Also, consider behaviors, practices, or experiences of specific demographic groups in the United States related to the social institutions studied this week (the family, the educational system, or religions) and examine ways specific demographic groups’ health could be affected positively or negatively.

For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2 or Option 3:

• Option 1:What are some effects of family life on health?
• Option 2:How might the educational system in the United States affect the health of American children?
• Option 3: How might health outcomes be affected by religious practices of members of varying religions in the United States? Are there other behaviors, outside of formal religious practice or formal religious ceremonial observances, such as dietary requirements or other behavioral requirements of members of religious institutions in the United States that might affect their health, either directly or indirectly?

Writing Requirements

• Minimum of 3-4 paragraphs
• APA format for in-text citations and list of references (3-4 included the book)
• Include citations from at least the assigned textbook/lesson reading and one additional outside scholarly source to support your response.

You Decide Census Paper

Instructions
In this week’s lesson, you learned about the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent racial and ethnic categories. For this assignment, consider the racial and ethnic categories used in the 2010 Census with the four racial, ethnic, and gender categories used in the 1790 Census: Free white males, free white females, all other free persons, slaves (Pew Research Center, 2015). Analyze the concepts of race, ethnicity, and gender as social constructs, just as sociologists do, by addressing the following:

1. Explain how you might have been categorized by the 1790 Census and how you would have been categorized by the 2010 Census.

2. Compare and contrast the two potential categorizations and explain how this exercise shows that the concepts of race, ethnicity, and even gender change over time. Most importantly, explain how this exercise shows that the concepts of race, ethnicity, and gender are social constructs. 

3.Determine and describe what ethnic, racial, and/or gender categories, if any, would be best, in your view, for the 2020 Census or the 2030 Census, to most accurately show the diversity of the U.S. population. What categories would be best to reveal the segments of the U.S. population most vulnerable to racial, ethnic, and/or gender inequalities or discrimination? What categories could be listed in the 2020 Census or the 2030 Census that might best educate the U.S. population on differences between race and ethnicity? Explain your decisions.

Include headings for each of the three main sections of the paper:

• What the Census Might Have Called Me
• Social Constructs
• Better Future Census Categories

Each of the three main sections of your paper must contain scholarly support in the form of quotes or paraphrases with respective citations from assigned reading (the textbook/lesson) and the outside scholarly source that you identify on your own.

Social Constructs Section: Thorough comparison/contrast of categorizations is provided. Student provides a thorough analysis of how race, ethnicity, and gender change over time, and how these concepts are social constructs.

Better Future Census Categories Section: The central idea is developed and expanded with depth of critical thought. Student thoroughly describes what ethnic, racial, and/or gender categories would be best for a future census.

Source Integration: Paraphrases or quotations from all required resources are included to support the analysis: 4 outside scholarly sources and textbook/lesson.

Writing: Mechanics & Usage: The writing is free of major errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation that would detract from a clear reading of the paper.

APA Paper Format: Paper is formatted to include all 6 of the following: references page, Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spacing, running header, and page numbers.

APA Resource Citation: All sources are properly cited in the text and references page demonstrating a mastery of APA format.
