Nursing has become one of the largest professions in the world, and as such, nurses have the potential to influence policy and politics on a global scale (Milstead & Short, 2019). When nurses influence the politics that improve the delivery of healthcare, they are ultimately advocating for their patients. Hence, policy-making has become an increasingly popular term among nurses as they recognize a moral and professional obligation to be engaged in healthcare legislation (Burke, 2016). There exist opportunities for RNs and APRNs to actively participate in policy-making. However, with the opportunities can come.

To be influential, nurses – particularly RNs and APRNs – must see themselves as professionals with the responsibility and capacity to influence healthcare policies delivery systems (Burke, 2016). Nurses can lean towards the nature of nursing, which is a “science of caring” or operate from a framework that values all people in a holistic way to advance people’s health. RNs and APRNs can influence practice standards and processes to assure quality of care.

How?

Considered as advanced and specialized professionals, RNs and APRNs can sit on committees or panels panel that give expert advice to policy makers (Tummers & Bekkers, 2014). Secondly, RNs and APRNs can become part of or conduct research that provided evidenced based support in policy making. Writing white papers, newspaper editorials, position statements, and other informative correspondence that educates the public and policymakers about the needs can support improvement of healthcare outcomes and overall improved nursing care (Milstead & Short, 2019).

With opportunities come challenges.

Policymakers may be unwilling to listen to expert advice or evidence-based research on particular policies to further either their political or personal agenda. In such as case resilience and advocacy can help make the policymakers change their mind (Burke, 2016).  Furthermore, sometimes some people (and/or policymakers) may question white papers, research, position statements, newspaper editorials or other correspondences that educate the public and policy makers (Burke, 2016). When that happens, you can seek the support of other stakeholders who support the evidence to help advance the policy agendas.

Finally, as an RN/APRN you may be required to advocate for or communicate these opportunities to participate in policymaking. You can do that in many ways. Two of the ways include;

  • Volunteering in policy-related activities including development meetings.
  • Participating in activities that advance health-policy driven agendas.
  • Seek appointments and serve on committees, boards, and leadership groups that have decision-making power.

Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification

  • Review the American Nurses Association competencies found in the Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice and reflect on the ANA functional areas detailed to determine which interests you the most. 
  • Review the TIGER competencies and reflect on which of these you could develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas.
  • Review the QSEN competencies and reflect on which of these you could develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas.

Part 2: ANA Competencies and Standards in Practice

  • Identify a nurse informaticist to interview. You may interview the same nurse informaticist you interviewed in Module 2.
  • Set up an interview date and time. Consult the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout for guidance. In the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout, you will find a form for the interview subject to sign as proof for the interview occurring.
  • Develop interview questions that address all of the following:
    • An explanation of the interview subject’s current role.
    • A description of the challenges the interview subject has overcome, currently encounters, and foresees.
    • A description of how the ANA functional areas, TIGER competencies, and QSEN competencies relate to the interview subject’s role.
  • Evaluate your responses in Part 1 and compare your responses with the responses from your interview subject.

The Assignment

Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Identify the ANA functional areas you are interested in and explain why.
  • Identify the TIGER competencies you might develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas you identified and explain why.
  • Identify the QSEN competencies you might develop based on how they relate to the ANA functional areas you identified and explain why.

Part 2: ANA Competencies and Standards in Nursing Practice

Create a 6- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation that addresses the following:

  • Explain how your vision of your future as a nurse informaticist compares with the interview subject’s current role. To support your explanation, identify at least one area that has prompted you to change your vision of the future and explain how or why. Then, identify at least one area that aligns with your vision of the future and explain how or why.
  • Compare the challenges you foresee in the nurse informaticist role with the challenges your interview subject regularly encounters. To support your comparison, identify at least one challenge that has prompted you to change your interpretation of typical challenges and explain how or why. Then, identify at least one area that aligns with your interpretation of typical challenges and explain how or why.
  • Determine how the ANA functional areas, TIGER competencies, and QSEN competencies you identified relate to your interview subject’s current role. Are these functional areas and competencies still relevant or aligned to your future role as a nurse informaticist? Why or why not?
  • Based on your responses in Part 1, evaluate whether your assessment of your own knowledge, skills, and attitudes about the functional areas, standards, or competencies has changed, broadened, or strengthened your alignment based on your interview. Be sure to refer to your Part 1 responses and explain the change (or lack of change).
  • Provide references in APA style at the end of your presentation—the reference slide or slides do not count toward your Assignment total.
  • Submit the completed parts of the Module 4 Interview Guidelines handout.
