Download the Johns Hopkins Research Evidence Appraisal Tool and the Johns Hopkins Individual Evidence Summary Tool located in the Student Resource Center under “Project & Practicum Resources.”

Select one of the eight practice problems that burden the overall health of the United States. Conduct a library search for two qualitative research studies addressing this problem. Appraise the two qualitative research studies using the Johns Hopkins Research Evidence Appraisal Tool.

After appraising and determining the Level of Evidence and Grade of Quality for your selected qualitative studies, summarize your findings on the Johns Hopkins Individual Evidence Summary Tool.

Include your completed Johns Hopkins Individual Evidence Summary Tool that includes your two qualitative research studies as an attachment with your initial post. Also, include PDF versions of your selected two qualitative research studies with your initial discussion post. Our faculty team will review both your two research studies and Johns Hopkins Individual Evidence Summary Tool.

Analyze the evidence summary of the two research studies to address the following.

• Does the research design answer the research question? Explain your rationale.
• Were the study sample participants representative? Why or why not?
• Compare and contrast the study limitations in these two studies.

     Evaluation is an invaluable component of all policy programs.  It provides data, commentary, and critical evidence for ongoing improvement, enhancement, and effectiveness of programs. It helps policymakers, administrators, clinicians, financial stakeholders, and the public understand what works and what needs to change to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities (Milstead & Short, 2019).

     There are some opportunities that exists for RN and APRNs to actively participate in policy review.  One of such opportunity is by joining a professional organization, these organizations often have lobbyists that bring nursing issues to Capitol Hill.  An example of such an organization is the American Nurses Association (ANA) which helps the RNs and the APRNs to understand how they can engage in policy review.  Nurses can participate in policy review on local, state, and federal levels (American Nurses Association, 2020).

     Another opportunity for RNs and APRNs to participate in policy review is through the workplace. The nurses are professionals who have the responsibility and capacity to influence the existing healthcare delivery programs.  A major role of the RNs and APRNs is to promote quality health and this can be achieved by participating in policy review.  Nonetheless, these opportunities have their challenges.  Some nurses do not want to belong to professional organizations due to financial obligations and time constraints.  In the workplace, nurses are not even aware of the policies that need to be reviewed.

     Strategies to better advocate for or communicate the existence of these opportunities to participate in policy review is to create awareness of the benefits of professional organizations to nurses. Nursing schools need to include healthcare policy education as part of their curriculum as well as encourage some form of political involvement.  Employers need to provide nurses with the time and resources to help them participate in policy review.  According to Laureate Education (2018), policy evaluation helps us to know if we are achieving our goals, if we are off the mark, and how we can improve.

Experimental Group: The group in a research study that receives the experimental drug, treatment, or procedure (Helbig, 2018).

Experimental [Randomized] Research Design: A type of quantitative research design that is highly controlled to study cause and effect with independent and dependent variables (Helbig, 2018).

• Example: Researcher manipulates one or more areas (independent) in the effects of temperature and humidity on work performance with at least two variables (high temp, low humidity and low temp, high humidity, etc.) within as many different workplace settings as available. The researcher could then measure the performance of workers in each condition (dependent) (Stone-Romero, 2011).

Quasi-Experimental Research Design: A type of quantitative research design that is partially controlled that studies cause and effect of variables (Helbig, 2018). No randomization.

• Example: People received performance-contingent pay based on their work but their supervisors would be responsible for the planned and unplanned treatment (performance-contingent treatment) or if their supervisor did not deliver as planned could offset the design (Stone-Romero, 2011). The studies need to be fair across the board and we cannot guarantee that all supervisors will “grade” their employees on the same scale or fairly, people are picked accordingly without randomization but can be useful when experimental experiments are not possible.

Nonexperimental Research: A research study that does not involve an experimental drug, treatment, or procedure (Helbig, 2018). Quantitative or qualitative.

• Example: Causes are assumed to be measured instead of manipulated; studying the relation between job enrichment and satisfaction. This is not a randomized study the data are collected from units that have independent variable from unknown causes. “The assumption would be erroneous if the self-reports systematically as a function of factors other than objective levels of enrichment” (Stone-Romero, 2011). Since this design deals with measured levels, it can be found to have very low levels of validity. This type of design may be more likely to be manipulated since it is measured instead of manipulated so there may be “favoritism” so this type should be avoided if possible.

The differences between each can be seen in the definitions but an experimental research design is quantitative that is highly controlled study where the dependent and independent variables matter, quasi-experimental is also quantitative but is only partially controlled with no randomization, and last, nonexperimental it is research that does not involve experimental drugs, treatments or procedures; it can be qualitative or quantitative.
