Instructions:

The average height for all males is 69.3 inches, with a standard deviation of 2.8 inches. For females, the average height is 64 inches, and the standard deviation is 2.8.  These are population values. For this week’s discussion, you will calculate a z-score based on your own height and determine whether your score is within the 95% normal range or if it is out of that range and considered unusual.

• Measure your height as precisely as possible to a tenth of an inch. For example, 5’2 ¼” would be 62.3 inches tall.
• Calculate the z-score based on population values for males or females.  Use the formula:  z= (x-µ)/σ where x is your height in inches.
• Calculate the normal range by creating the interval that is within 2 standard deviations of the population mean.  Multiply the population standard deviation by 2 and then add/subtract from the population mean.

In your discussion post, include the following, based on your calculations.

• Is your height within the normal range?  Is this what you expected?
• Would your height be considered unusual?  Why or why not.
• Have you encountered any challenges based on your height?  For example, someone who is shorter or taller may have difficulty finding pants that are an appropriate length.
• How is the concept of normality used in your field?  For example, a patient’s blood pressure is compared to a normal range of values, and a financial planner may check the “average” return of a stock.
• How does knowing what is usual help people and corporations and government organizations plan?  For example, how do airplane manufacturers use the normal height to design aircraft seating?

Case Study: A 65-year-old woman was just been diagnosed with Stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She was informed of this diagnosis in her primary care physician’s office. She leaves her physician’s office and goes home to review all of her tests and lab results with her family. She goes home and logs into her PHR. She is only able to pull up a portion of her test results. She calls her physician’s office with this concern. The office staff discussed that she had part of her lab work completed at a lab not connected to the organization, part was completed at the emergency room, and part was completed in the lab that is part of the doctor’s office organization.

The above scenario might be a scenario that you have commonly worked with in clinical practice. For many reasons, patients often receive healthcare from multiple organizations that might have different systems.

As you review this scenario, reflect and answer these questions for this discussion.

• What are the pros and cons of the situation in the case study?
• What safeguards are included in patient portals and PHRs to help patients and healthcare professionals ensure safety?
• Do you agree or disagree with the way that a patient obtains Personal Health Records (PHRs)?
• What are challenges for patients that do not have access to all of the PHRs? Remember, only portions of the EHRs are typically included in the PHRs.

Create a 5–7 slide presentation (with detailed speaker’s notes) on how you would select, foster collaboration among, and educate a team dedicated to solving a diversity issue.

Scenario

Imagine that Lynette follows up with you in an e-mail shortly after reading your views on leadership and collaboration:

Hi,
Thanks for sending me your thoughts last week on the diversity issue at the clinic. Your next step is to select a team of professionals who can help you in this project and prepare an introduction of the project for a first meeting with them.
I want you to prepare a presentation to serve as a brief, but substantive introduction for the first meeting with a group of 4–5 members who will participate on the committee tasked with addressing the diversity issue. Once I review more information about the proposed team I can help you with the recruitment. The presentation should be 5–7 minutes and use 6–8 slides with detailed speaker’s notes so I can understand your approach. Not a lot of time or space, so keep things pretty high level. Do the following:
Briefly outline the project goals and highlight 2–3 of the initial priorities to be addressed by the group. Also, explain why they are important.
Explain the composition of the team and why you chose them. Note that you will not know the exact individuals yet, but assume we will recruit the people with the desired qualities and characteristics that you outline in the presentation. Consider the following:Include a group of professionals you believe can help define the problem and ultimately make recommendations on how to address it.

Presentation Guidelines

• Length: 5–7 PowerPoint slides (not including title slide) that would accompany an approximately 5-minute oral presentation.
• Notes: Prepare detailed speaker’s notes describing items on each slide so that the viewer can accurately interpret the deeper meanings and intentions that would have been conveyed orally. Support your claims, arguments, and conclusions with credible evidence from 2–3 current, scholarly or professional sources.
