Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal. DUE BY 1/14

Students are required to submit weekly reflective narratives throughout the course that will culminate in a final, course-long reflective journal due in Topic 10. The narratives help students integrate leadership and inquiry into current practice.

This reflection journal also allows students to outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week students should also explain how they met a course competency or course objective(s).

In each week’s entry, students should reflect on the personal knowledge and skills gained throughout the course. Journal entries should address one or more of the areas stated below.  In the Topic 10 graded submission, each of the areas below should be addressed as part of the summary submission.

Two paragraphs, two references no more than 5 years. 

A group of DNP scholars and Ph.D. scholars can collaborate on research and present evidence to elicit change. Once the evidence-based practice change is determined, they help disseminate the information, and the DNP scholar can assist with education and training for implementation.

These advanced practice scholars are at the forefront of a breakthrough with research and evidence-based practice. Multidisciplinary teams form a Plan-Do-Study-Act or 8-step project to implement change and gather data. Creating a group presents the opportunity for multiple disciplines to collaborate and strategize patients’ care (Root et al., 2020).

The DNP scholar thinks more on a systems level and provides direction for the healthcare system (Zaccagnini & White, 2017). DNP scholars mesh in continuous learning and improvements. Nurses who obtain a DNP commit to providing evidence-based practice and ensuring that nurses are carrying this out at the bedside on the microsystems level of healthcare (Trautman et al., 2018).

In my workplace, strategies utilized to help others embrace change include town hall meetings, nursing research conferences, and nursing grand rounds sessions. These opportunities support nurses in generating new ideas and participating in the decision-making processes. Thus, allowing them to feel empowered and engaged in the work they do.

One of the methods that can be used to gather cultural information from patients is simply asking the patient about his/her cultural beliefs that the patient will like to be practiced while their hospitalized. The other method is inquiring from the family members and the patients behaviours by the use of non-verbal signs. When providing patient care, nurses must suspend personal biases and fully respect patients in spite of differences in culture. Cultural competency does not mean becoming an expert on every culture encountered, instead nurses should recognize what they do and do not know in order to provide appropriate care(Falkner 2018) .Cultural competence relates to better patient care in the sense that knowing the diverse feelings, values, and beliefs of patients leads to increased respect and mutual understanding from patients and increased participation from the local community, which consequently results in improved health outcomes (Sharifi, Adib-Hajbaghery & Najafi, 2019). There are various ways through which a nurse demonstrates cultural competence in nursing practice, with one of them being the way the nurse speaks to the patient. The nurse should speak to the patient in a way that is easy to follow and understand. The nurse should not disregard or judge the belief or religious background of a patient. Instead, the nurse should encourage the patient to do what works best for he/she thinks works best.

Introduction

Much has changed in American medicine since the establishment of the first medical school in 1765 at the College of Philadelphia. At that time, physicians had very little professional training, and much of their training was unregulated—as was the treatment they provided to patients. As the medical profession became more established and education became more formal, the rules governing who could practice medicine also became more formal and restricted.

With the formation of the American Medical Association (AMA) in 1876, more medical schools required a four-year degree in order to qualify for medical practice, and the attempt to focus on quality became stronger. However, since many physicians were already from the “old school,” it was difficult to make the necessary changes that might restrict or diminish those educated earlier. Not until outside organizations began to exert pressure to enforce standards in education did improvements in training begin to be seen.
