Self-care by definition represents the practice of taking action for purposes of improving one’s own health. This in the end help an individual in protecting one’s own well-being as well as happiness. This in the end results in reduced stress and healthy relationships in the working setting consequently resulting in improved patient outcomes. For one to be a competent leader, it is imperative to care for self as well as adopt effective leadership traits. Self-care and self-leadership are directly related because having a healthy work-life balance allows a leader to be empathetic and present to both the staff and the patients they serve.

The Chamberlain Care Model pertains to an individual, environment, nursing and health, which enables the nurse to provide holistic care to the patient. This model allows for development of self as well as allow for communication with peers which aids in achieving most care goals.
This model can be applied as a guideline to provide a peer and client with information necessary to achieving self-discovery of information. Adequate self-care results in less stress as well as creation of healthy relationships. Inadequate self-care can results in high turnover rates which may affect service delivery within a given setting.

Authentic leadership represents understanding one’s self deeply and perceived by others as encouraging, positive, honest and strong. Both self-leadership and self-care are reflected in authentic leadership principles by the nurse portraying positive sense of self-care through being there both mentally and physically for the staff. Self-care and self-leadership thereby forms the foundation of authentic leadership.

It is also evident that authentic leadership takes time which also holds true for self-leadership and self-care. As a future nurse executive, it will critical to come up with proper self-care techniques which will play an important role in caring for my staff and patients. To cultivate self-care and leadership one strategy to use will be to set time for myself two days in a week. The second strategy will involve asking for help and support when they are needed.
