Vulnerable populations face many healthcare issues that are mainly exacerbated by social factors. My chosen vulnerable population is low income and homeless families. This group of people is considered medically vulnerable because they are susceptible to chronic illnesses and do not have the financial capability to access quality healthcare. These people are also more prone to behavioral health issues and mental illnesses. The impact of these chronic illnesses tends to be more severe because of the low income and homeless families do not have adequate access to quality healthcare. Their healthcare options are limited by their economic status. Other issues faced by these populations include stigmatization and discrimination. A big percentage of them are uninsured. This increases their morbidity and mortality rates compared to other populations. 

I chose this population because I believe that with the right strategies and policies in place, they can be helped to achieve positive health outcomes. Due to their low income, this population also has a very low literacy level which means that they have trouble understanding basic healthcare concepts. I believe that by empowering this population and facilitating healthcare education, a positive outcome can be achieved. 

By addressing the issues faced by this population, healthcare disparities will be reduced or totally eliminated. Quality healthcare should be made accessible to all people regardless of the socio-economic status of the individuals. Patient advocacy is also something that is very crucial for this population due to their minimal understanding of healthcare issues and how the healthcare system operates. As Richard, et.al, state, this population may be “subjected to coercion or may be compromised in their ability to give informed consent to receive medical or surgical treatments or to participate in research” (Richard, et.al, 2016). Patient advocacy is therefore crucial when handling low-income families and the homeless.

Understanding who is involved at the local level is important when implementing evidence based practice. Knowing who the stakeholders are, who would be the recipients of the information, and who could assist within the community. Understanding the framework of a facility can go a long way when presenting your EBP change. “The 14 attributes of implementation of EBP were resources access, work structure, patient characteristics, professional role, culture, facility characteristics, system features, healthcare professional characteristics, financial, collaboration, leadership, evaluation, regulatory standards, and societal influences”. (Squires, &Grimshaw, 2019) Having these attributes when conducting EBP, and proposing it to steak holders should successfully increase the implementation of the EBP being proposed. 

My preceptor and I discussed my capstone project at length and talked about what the hospital does if a medication error happens, or how the unit responds in case of a medication error. This facility uses a program called “Risk Master,” where all medication go into a data base for Risk management to review. Although we do believe that risk management should be involved in all medication errors, we believe that the local staff members (community) would be able to provide better feed back and collaborate better on ways to decrease the errors. This is due to the staff having a better understanding of how the unit works. My preceptor and I decided that when I present my proposal that all parties including unit staff members, along with risk management should be in attendance so they can use the information.

2. List and discuss lessons that you and all healthcare professionals can learn from these two cases.
3. Describe how the principle of beneficence and the virtue of benevolence could be applied to these cases. Do you think the hospital adminstrators handled the situations legally and ethically?
4. In addition to benevolence, which other virtues exhibited by their colleagues might have helped Thao and Hiatt?
5. Discuss personal virtues that might be helpful to second victims themselves to navigate the grieving process.

RE: Discussion – Week 6-one page three references

    The peer review article I chose, was about using acetaminophen for pain management post op laparoscopic surgery ( Annals of Medicine and Surgery, 2017).  I decided to use this topic, because I have been working in the ortho floor lately, and noticed a lot of physicians prescribing Tylenol to patients post op, around the clock. I kept asking the charge nurse and other nurses why, and nobody seemed to have a definite answer, as to why. Doctors would explain to me, that it was way to prevent prescribing hard core pain medications, instead. Due to the fact, that when the patients are discharged, they will not be able to get that IV Dilaudid, at home. 

    I searched for my article using the Walden University. I found the search for this article on the website, to be easy and user-friendly. On top of the search, the library gave me additional topics related to my search. Similar to Youtube, you can continue clicking on interesting things, and the next thing you know, two hours have passed, and you are reading on why cats have 9 lives! In other words, I found the Walden University library to be very useful for me and my colleagues.  The DNP scholar, who is seeking to learn more about the different types of inquiry, Research, Quality Improvement, and Evidence-based practice, will bridge the gap between knowledge, research, application, and translation of evidence to nursing practice. There will be interrelationships between nursing practice, education, theory, and research. A systematic review is an important tool for the DNP scholar who is seeking evidence (Polit & Beck, 2017). Dang & Dearholt inform us that systematic reviews utilize meta-synthesis and meta-analysis to analyze the results of several studies. Therefore, these two most reliable methods and the highest standards in evidence-based care could lead the DNP scholar; further determine the effects of nursing interventions, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Case-controlled studies, case series, and case reports make the DNP do in depth research of individual units, which gives insight into the specific intervention. Cohort studies considered observational studies where the DNP scholar can be able to answer questions on the disease etiology, diagnosis, and prognosis except interventions. DNP scholar uses random control trials to measure the different interventions therefore make the best clinical decision on the outcome of each intervention. Critically appraised individual articles are less reliable however, it helps to assess the outcomes for evidence doing an individual study. Critically appraised topics help to understand the strength of evidence provided and creates an understanding on how to evaluate and synthesize multiple research studies. The least reliable evidence yet helpful for the DNP scholar is the ideas, opinions anecdotes, and editorials. It is crucial as a DNP scholar to understand the pyramid of evidence (all seven levels) and to identify the levels needed for their study.
