Instructions

When using social media, the communication barrier of distance is eliminated. This comes with obvious benefits, but it also comes with extra challenges due to the increased potential for misunderstandings with cultural differences and language barriers. The person that knows how to use communication opportunities will have a strong advantage in their work and in their networking and relationships.

This assignment has two parts to it.

Part 1:

Locate and study social media pages of businesses that are making an effort to market their product globally.  You can use any social media platform you choose. Examine what you believe the companies are doing well and what can be improved. Look for ways in which their communication are clear to a large number of people, breaking through language and cultural barriers. Also look for ways in which the pages could be improved due to the limitations and challenges of global communication.

After you have studied several pages that are seeking to reach a large number of people, choose three of them.

1A. Choose the page that you feel does the best job overall.

Describe why you feel like this social media page was the best one that you viewed. Take a screenshot of the page and upload it with your submission.

1B. Choose one that needs improvement.

Describe what you see that needs improvement in their effort to reach people globally. Take a screenshot of the page and upload it with your submission.

1C. Choose one that most closely represents the type of page that you might create in the future. If you have no interest or potential need for ever creating a social media page that is intended to reach the masses globally, then choose one that you are interested in and like.

Describe why you chose this social media page as the one that you can best relate to or like the best. Take a screenshot of the page and upload it with your submission.

Note: Do not use the same social media page for more than one of these three choices. For example, do not say that one social media page was the best and also the one that you would be most likely to create a similar page as.  In other words, do not use one social media page for both 1A and 1C. You need to choose three separate pages in total.

Part 2:

Now you will use what you have learned to create your own social media page with the intent of reaching the masses. You will not need to actually create a page on a social media platform. Creating a fake company or organization online could obviously cause problems. Instead, emulate the formatting of a social media page, and create it so that you can submit it to your instructor.

Take what you learned from Part 1 to create the best fake social media page you can on an imaginary company or organization of your choice. Your company or organization can be anything you want, just ensure that it is class-appropriate. Describe what you learned in this assignment and how you incorporated that knowledge into your social media page.

Field Experience Log

 

Guidelines for the Field Experience Requirement

You must “attend” at least 4 policy events, at least approximately 1 hour in length. Attendance of at least one of these events must be in-person.

Up to 3 of the 4 events may be online and they must have a health policy focus. Online health policy events/ webinars will be posted from which you may choose. In addition, you may identify your own online policy events, but please check with your instructor to make sure the events you choose are eligible for field hours.

In-person events must be health-related. For example, an example of in-person event would be attendance at a local board of health meeting, a local school-board meeting, a legislative hearing or meeting, a meeting by an executive branch agency that falls under your governor, a meeting by advocacy organization or special interest group, or a meetings of a political party, political group, or candidate.

General Guidelines

  1. At each event, take notes, and then write up an account and analysis of each event, using the template for field experience logs (below), and the Field Experience Rubric posted on Moodle.
  2. You are required to complete and post a field event report assignment every other week, in Weeks 02, 04, 06, and 08.

Field Log Guidelines

As a way of demonstrating completion of this course requirement, you must submit, in writing, field logs that detail certain aspects of the event. The template for field experience logs is below.

  • Each event log should be three to five double-spaced pages of text.
  • Provide only a brief summary of the event itself.
  • The analysis section should be 550 to 800 words, and be the most developed component of the report. In the analysis section, you can write about the process of policy being made at this event, and/or you can write about the actual health policy issue being discussed/considered.
  • Your analysis should reference at least two sources. They can be from the learning materials in this course or other sources, but should be current (within the last 3 months).
  • Use APA format for citations and references.
  • Examples of logs are posted on Moodle.

Template for Field Experience Logs

  • The name of the event/meeting and who has sponsored it.
  • Describe the steps taken in preparation for the event (beyond listening or attending the event).
  • Place, date, time, and length of hearing/meeting/event.
  • Topic under discussion.
  • Names of participants and their titles (to the extent you can get them).
  • Brief description of the testimony/meeting/event. (If more than one issue is presented, discuss a sampling of issues.)
  • Analysis of the health policy issue and its implications for healthcare. Integrate course content and readings in your analysis. This section should be approximately 500 to 750 words.

Journal Article Review/Critique

 A journal article review is an important course assignment. See guidelines and detailed instructions below. Articles should be from peer-reviewed or scholarly journals and relate to the field of study.
