The Research Process

Instructions:

1. Read an article published recently(less than 5 years) on a topic of your interest.
2. Provide the citation and a written summary of your answers to the following questions:
   1. What is the research problem?
   2. What is the purpose statement?
   3. What were the initial hypotheses for this study?
   4. What was the study design?
   5. Where the hypotheses rejected or accepted?
   6. What was the overall conclusion of this paper?

Read Chapter 5

1. Describe the organizational characteristics of the facility in which you currently have a clinical assignment. Include the following:

a. Type of organization

b. Overall climate of the facility 

c. How the organization is structured 

d. Formal and informal goals and processes of the organization 

2. Why is the work climate of an organization important to nurse leaders and managers?

3. What are the ways in which a nurse can enhance his or her expertise?

4. Explain “shared governance,” and describe how it can affect the power structure of a health-care organization. 

5. Why is it important for staff nurses to understand the culture and real goals of the organization in which they work? 

1. Describe your ideal organization. Explain each feature and why you think it is important.

2. Interview one of the staff nurses on your unit. Find out what practices within the organization help to empower the nurses. Compare this list of practices with those discussed in the textbook. 

3. Recall the last time you walked into a hospital, clinic, or physician’s office for the first time. What was your first impression? Did you feel comfortable and welcome? Why or why not? If you could change the first impression this facility makes, what would you do?

4-What changes could be made at a very low cost? What changes would be expensive? Finally, discuss why it is important for a health-care facility to make a good first impression

Part I:  The Narrative Summary of your interview with female-identified (M3A1)  regarding their perceptions about their own health.

Part II: An Analysis of the interview using supporting evidence based literature.  

Assignment Guidelines:  For each paper you are to conduct an interview (M3 with a female identified individual and M4 with a male identified individual) which will provide information regarding the individual’s perceptions about their own health as well as their experiences in the healthcare system from the perspective of sex and gender.   

Choose someone who is willing to sit with you and talk to you openly about their thoughts and experiences. This individual may be a family member, a friend, or a co-worker.

Remember, do not use full names within the paper use only first names for confidentiality reasons.

Part I: After completing the interview, you will write a one page narrative summary of the data you have collected addressing all key points as listed below. Use the following questions to guide your interview.

• Tell me a little bit about yourself: work life, family life, interests.
• How involved would you say you are in researching information related to your own health?
• How involved would you say you are in researching information related to the health of other people in your life? Examples?
• What are the biggest concerns you have regarding your health? Now? In the future?
• How often do you consult with a healthcare professional?
• Complete the following sentence: I will make an appointment with a healthcare provider when ___________________.
• What usually causes you to make an appointment?
• Do you feel like your health-related habits are similar or different from other members of your sex? If so, in what way? If not, why? Any examples?

DO NOT submit the answers to the interview-rather use these to assist you in writing your narrative summary for Part I.

Part I: Interview Summary

• Provide a brief description of the person you interviewed that includes demographic information. (i.e., age, occupation, family situation, marital status, etc.).
• Describe their involvement in gathering health-related information.
• Describe their relationship with the healthcare system, in terms of how often they interact with healthcare professionals and why.
• Describe their perceptions of how they compare to other members of their own sex.

Part II: Analysis: Addressing the following components, write a one page analysis using the information obtained during the interview process. Support your observations and assumptions with evidence based literature and/or readings from Module 2 and 3. A minimum of 3 articles are required.

• Discuss your perceptions of the individual you interviewed from the perspective of sex and gender.  
• Describe how similar or different are the roles and behaviors of your interviewee compared to other members of their same sex.
• Provide examples of gender-related behaviors to support your analysis.

Compose your work using a word processor (or other software as appropriate) and save it frequently to your computer. Paper must be submitted in a word.doc format.

Be sure to check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors before you upload it.

When you are ready to submit your work, go to the Assignment tab, click “Browse My Computer” and find your file. Once you have located your file, click “Open” and, if successful, the file name will appear under the Attached files heading. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Submit.” Please, do not submit as a TEXT.

Turnitin® : all papers submitted through CANVAS are automatically submitted to Turnitin®.  Turnitin® is an originality checking and plagiarism prevention service that checks your writing for citation mistakes or inappropriate copying.    When you submit your paper, Turnitin® compares it to text in its massive database of student work, websites, books, articles, etc.   A recommended percentage of matched words is 3% for any one source and no more than 15% overall for your entire paper. This means a high percentages of match requires you to revise your paper such that you are either paraphrasing or quoting material correctly. High matches may result in a failing grade and/or further disciplinary action per the Excelsior College Academic Honesty Policy.

Follow the MRU Soap Note Rubric as a guide

Use APA format and must include minimum of 2 Scholarly Citations.

TURN-It-In (anti-Plagiarism program) will be used.

The use of tempates is ok with regards of Turn it in, but the Patient History, CC, HPI, The Assessment and Plan should be of your own work and individualized to your made up patient. 

You must use template for Soap note 1. Use the information provided in the PDF as an “EXAMPLE”. You must use the word temple file and tailor it to your patient and their diagnosis. Using this template will make it very easy to learn the things needed in the note and help you not forget to put something or lose points due to incorrect format or missing information. 

The Chief Complaint, Patient info, HPI, Plan section, and references must all be of your own work and no copy-paste.

The Main Areas of Focus that will be checked for plagiarism is Chief Complain, History of Present Illness (HPI), Assessment with Rationale and Explanation, and the Plan. All of this should be in your own words and not copy-pasted from a past note or website or book. There should be minimum likeness noted by turn it in software in these areas. 

The Objective and Subjective information can be from a template (Standard Documentation) and will only be looked at for content and not for plagiarism. So if you are past 50% and the above main areas of focus sections are clear and minimum then you are ok. You can resubmit as many times but after 3 it takes up to 24 hours to get turn it in a score.

This is a made-up patient, so review your diagnosis and have the patient have the standard presentation, objective and subjective symptoms that would typically present and adjust them on.

Leadership Theories in Practice

A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.

However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.

Yet, how well are these theories put to practice? In this Discussion, you will examine formal leadership theories. You will compare these theories to behaviors you have observed firsthand and discuss their effectiveness in impacting your organization.

To Prepare:

· Review the Resources and examine the leadership theories and behaviors introduced.

· Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.

· Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.

Post two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected. Describe a leader whom you have seen use such behaviors and skills, or a situation where you have seen these behaviors and skills used in practice. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain to what extent these skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace.
