Communities do not exist in a bubble. Often changes made in the larger society, driven by technology, have an unexpected effect on local communities. Consider the effects of the advancements in transportation technologies on communities. Routes of transportation have evolved from water to train to the road and then to air. Each of these advancements led to job displacement and changes in travel routes. In the United States, prior to the mid-1800s, the communities that thrived had water access and ports where the exchange of goods and services occurred. With the building of the transcontinental railway and the growth of transportation by rail, the communities that thrived had train depots. With the building of major highways in the 1900s, access to those roads became critical to survival. With each advancement, local communities were impacted, such that many communities that grew around train depots became ghost towns full of poverty, homelessness, and despair once train travel was no longer the primary means of human transportation. 

In this assignment, you are asked to create a presentation on one of the following topics:

• Green Energy
• Globalization
• Communication Technology
• Remote Elementary Education
• Remote High School Education
• Remote Work

You can create your presentation in your choice of presentation media. For example, you could choose to create a PowerPoint presentation, a video, or use Prezi. (refer to the Unit 1 assignment) If you choose to use video, you are required to supply a script as well as the URL of the video.

In your presentation, you must address the following:

• Describe the specific technological development and its association with your chosen topic.
• Explain why you chose that topic and the technological advancement associated with it.
• Discuss which demographic (income, age, sexual preference, ethnicity) and/or geographic feature (urban, suburban, rural) might be most affected by the changes. Support your opinion with three (3) external references.
• Explore the societal impacts (good and bad) associated with the technology. include a discussion for each of the following:
  • Economic impacts (unemployment, loss of revenue, poverty), include one (1) external reference
  • Health impacts (including mental health), include one (1) external reference
  • Privacy concerns, include one (1) external reference
  • Community life, include one (1) external reference

Be sure to use appropriate sources for the external references required for this assignment.

 The purpose of this assignment is to synthesize and apply the knowledge you gained in class into a well-written research paper. For this assignment, you will conduct research and write a paper containing the two elements:

Part I: Choose one of the listed topics

• Implementing change on a nursing unit (Student must incorporate an example and a change theory)
• Leadership traits for successfully managing in the clinical arena.
• Quality improvement in the nursing unit or system
• Mentorship in nursing
• Preceptor programs for nursing leaders
• Solving incivility in the work place, How can a nurse manager help? (conflict resolution)
• Legal Issues within the nursing unit
• Promotion of ethical behaviors within the nursing unit (student must create a plan and implementation strategy)
• Nursing Unit Strategic Planning
• Compare and contrast the following new roles for the changing health care arena:
  • Nurse Navigators, Clinical Nurse Leaders, and Leaders in Patient-Centered Care

Part II: Evaluate how the topic applies to 2 of the following course competencies.

• Integrate concepts related to leadership into the professional nursing role.
• Analyze the philosophy, goals, and organizational structure of a healthcare system in relationship to the delivery of quality healthcare.
• Compare selected theories of leadership, management, and organizations in relation to healthcare agencies.
• Identify how collaborative leadership styles might be utilized in various community agencies to enhance the role of the nurse leader.
• Examine change theory, change management, conflict resolution, and strategies to promote innovation.
• Explain principles of continuous quality improvement (CQI) and the process of quality planning, improvement, and control.
• Discuss the management process and its impact on the delivery of optimal healthcare.
• Analyze how accountability, advocacy, and collaboration augment the management of care.
• Describe the meaning of teamwork in respect to the health care team

In addition to the assignment specifics above, your paper should:

• Be 3-4 pages, not including the title and reference pages.
• Source(s) should be integrated into the paragraphs. Use in-text citations pointing to evidence in the literature that supports your ideas.
• Incorporate a minimum of two (2) peer-reviewed sources into your paper.
• Use current APA format to style your paper and to cite your sources.
• Include a title page and a reference page listing the sources you used. Be sure to plan enough time for proofreading and editing.

Leadership and Managing

This week you reflected upon the difference between a “manager” and a “leader” and discussed this concept with your classmates and professor in the discussion board. In a written essay please answer the following questions:

• What are the differences between leaders and managers? What characteristics are similar and what are different?
• Provide a total of three examples. First, of someone who has great managerial skills. Second, another individual with great leadership skills. Third, another person with poor managerial skills. These can be made up individuals or examples you have seen without any identifying information. Discuss how the staff of each individual would be affected by the skills of the leader/manager.
• Complete the Emotional Intelligence Test Discuss your scores and what they mean. What did you learn about yourself as a leader? (Note that a 10 on the EI test means strong. Assignment Expectations:

Length: 1500 to 2000 words total (at least 500 words per question prompt)

Structure: Include a title page and reference page in APA format. These do not count towards the minimum word count for this assignment. Your essay must include an introduction and a conclusion.

Choose a topic related to health that has meaning to your personal health, interests, and well-being. This may be a disease, such as diabetes, or healthy fitness activity.

Conduct a database search comparing one of the following database directories with Google Scholar.

Explain how you were able to narrow down the number of articles hits you had initially, and present within your post a summary of the credible article you chose as your resource. How do you know your article choice is credible? Which database do you prefer and why?

How will using a database search facilitate your:

• scholarly work;
• nursing work (evidence-based practice); and
• personal self-development?

Introduction

Evidence-based practice involves finding the best research evidence to support an intervention, which is integrated with patient preferences and values and professional expertise, and then implemented. Once you have searched and found relevant and timely research studies, the next step is to evaluate the quality of their methods, design, and other elements and to explore the application of the evidence they provide in different scenarios and settings. It is of paramount importance to correctly identify the type of research methods used in the study—quantitative or qualitative, or a mixture of both—and to evaluate the study to ensure those methods are high-quality, valid, reliable, and accurate. Consequently, doctoral professionals must develop a working knowledge of how to identify and critically appraise specific, important elements of both quantitative and qualitative research studies. Rapid critical appraisal tools assist in developing this skill.

Preparation

• Review the media pieces in Weeks 1–3, focusing on the EBP process, the PICO(T) process, and the important step of critically appraising research evidence.

• Describe the key elements of a research study.
• Complete a rapid critical appraisal of each study.
• Write an executive summary that compares the two studies.

Document Format and Length

Your document should be 4–5 pages in length, including the overviews, rapid critical appraisals, and executive summary.

Supporting Evidence

Include at least two resources, other than the course textbook, to support your critical appraisals. Provide in-text citations and references in APA format for each study, the critical appraisal tools, and other resources used.

Assignment Grading

The following requirements correspond to the scoring guide criteria, so be sure to address each point. Read the performance-level descriptions in the scoring guide for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed.

• Describe the key elements of a research study.
  • Include the study’s purpose, methods, design, results, and any other aspects of the study you think are noteworthy.
  • Consider how the study contributes to the scholarly literature.
• Evaluate the quality of each study, using the appropriate rapid critical appraisal tool (RCA).
  • Create a table or other organized format for your answers to the questions on the RCA tool for each study.
  • What evidence supports your assertions and conclusions?
• Compare a qualitative and quantitative study’s quality, significance, and the practical application of results (evidence) in a health care setting.
  • Consider the following questions to guide the comparison of these studies in your executive summary:
    • Which study provides the best overall evidence? What elements in the study led you to this conclusion?
    • Which study provides subjective information that could be integrated to make positive changes to services, processes, systems, or patient care?
    • What is the significance of each study’s results in a hospital setting? How do the results affect patients?
    • How could the evidence found in each study be applied in different health care settings? In the overall health care industry?
• Support main points, assertions, arguments, or conclusions with relevant and credible evidence.
