The health IT topic which I selected was the implementation of electronic health records (EHRs) in improving medication adherence. In medicine, adherence also referred to as compliance describes the degree to which a patient follows the medical advice correctly. In most basic terms, it refers to drug or medication compliance.

It can also be applied to other situations and may entail compliance in medical device use, therapy sessions, self-directed exercises and self-care. My specialty track is the nurse executive. This is basically an administrative role in the nursing field. Increasing patient’s medication adherence thereby falls under the jurisdiction of a nurse executive.
There are various reasons as to why I selected the application of EHRs in increasing adherence rates among patients. One is that non-adherence is resulting major healthcare losses. At a country level, this run into billions of dollars which can be put into a more useful use.
Secondly, non-adherence leads to increase readmission rates and death rates. EHRs have powerful tools which send reminder notifications to the patients on when to take their medication. It also helps providers in tracking instances of non-compliance. This highlights the important role which is played by EHRs in enhancing compliance among patients.
Implementation of EHRs for purposes of enhancing medication adherence will impact my practice positively. The knowledge on how to reduce non-adherence is critical for my future role as a nurse executive. Education to patients on the importance of adhering to medication process is very essential.

Empowering the healthcare providers on the usage of EHRs may also play a great role in improving the adherence rates. Among the positive impacts of this in my practice include improved quality of care, reduced readmission rates, saved funds among others.
It is hence evident that the degree to which an individual behavior corresponds with the agreed recommendations from a healthcare practitioner should be high for one to be considered to have adhered to the treatment process.
